  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Macbook Pro Retina for RED editing on CS6?

Band width is not the problem with Laptops... its the over working of the CPU that's the problem at the moment. You will find that your FAN will turn because the CPU is getting flogged.. and the laptop starts to slow.... and then playback suffers, and then it jam's.... A restart of the program has to take place. It's something Adobe are aware of and I'm sure will fix soon I hope.
I'm keen to get back on it.

Mark,
Are you speaking of a specific bug in the Adobe software, or just the general issues encountered when overworking a laptop CPU? I'm accustomed to the occasional crash on my old dual core laptop when editing (and the HEAT) - is that what you're referring to? Or is there something specifically wrong with the new version of Adobe that's especially wrong?

Thanks!

P.S. You have a kick ass body of work, Mark!

You are wright. Adobe use all the power of the computer (or notebook) and when you have reached the limit, it goes very slow. On my Nehalem 2009, I had to install fan control, and when i have to render, i put it in full mode before rendering. If I don't, I get EVERY TIME, after about 10 minutes, a kernel panic and I only can reset the computer. On the macbook, the fan is very much stressed but no kernel panic.
For my next notebook, i have bought an USB cooler

I wonder how this http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...8US_GT700NC_008US_17_3_Notebook_Computer.html
compares to the new macbook pro for cs6 and such.

That laptop will be great for a mobile editing station. I don't fancy carrying it around for my portable workstation though. It is huge, and rather heavy...

Essentially for true portability though, I dont think you can beat the new macbook pro. Its half that MSIs weight, a 7hr plus battery life, an amazing screen. This is perfect for my location work. All I really need it for to tell you the truth. A no brainer. If a PC came out with those features I would also buy it right away... but for now, it is this new mac.

Meh... It weighs almost 9 pounds. Previous generation CPU at a lower clock rate, no Thunderbolt. The screen is 1080p, but nothing special there... All things considered, it's just a chunky notebook (even by PC standards). Price is OK, but I think one can do better for the money... Break the $2K barrier and move into the same pricing territory as the new Macbook Pro (retina or otherwise) and a lot of options open up.

FWIW, I saw the new retina MBP today. All I can say is that I'm starting to regret not ordering first thing now that the wait is 3~4 weeks out. I didn't get much of a chance to play with it... Like a minute of actual hands-on, but the screen is great. Very responsive system and the dual TB + dual USB3 seem to make it a no-brainer upgrade. Even an upgrade from my 2011 15". I won't be trading in the 17" just yet though. :)

3-4? Not true.. I ordered yesterday and received my tracking info this morning ( Delivery date June 21st).
I can pass my apple's rep. contact info if you like. He got me almost $400 discount + $100 gift card.

Take-a-look;

Based on your screen-grab you are getting your gift card on the 21st and your MacBook in mid July (Between 12~18) so it is indeed 3-4 weeks...

1- Bought my MPB under Education store (Saved $200)
I just told them I'm in BMCC, They don't ask you sh**)

2- 16GB Memory (Saved$20)

3- Apple care $239 (saved $110)

Plus received $100 gift card for APP store (free)

I did pay tax and I will file it end of the year (as business - lol).

Just came back from my friend and tested his retina MacBook pro base model(2.3ghz, 8Gb ram) with 4k R3Ds. WOW. It was playing back without dropping any frames at 1/4 on software mercury playback engine. My 17" MacBook Pro Early 2011 is not able to do this. I must say that I am pretty confident that my top of the line retina 2.7ghz with 16gb will be a real beast now! I should receive it in 2~3 weeks and I cannot wait.

I did try to add the 650M to the list of supported CUDA OPENGL cards but it was not working. When I added it to the OPENCL text file it did work and I could enable mercury playback OPENCL but it didn't seem to improve anything.

Has anybody got the 650m to work with CUDA?

To enable OpenCL I added: "GeForce GT 650M" to the OpenCL card list.

Adding "GeForce GT 650M" to the OpenGL card list didn't do anything. ***I'm pulling the card name from memory so forgive me if it is not the correct name but I'm pretty sure that it is. Run GPUSniffer to be sure you have the correct name.

Based on the results of the base model(2.3GHZ) without any gpu acceleration I must say that the higher models (2.6 and 2.7) will be amazing portable editing workstations for Red. If Adobe adds GPU support for 650m it will be even more amazing. Hopefully someone figures it out before I get my retina!

...and the screen is gorgeous.

Thanks Rob..
Can't wait to get mine ... June 21st

Yes, new retina macbook + CS6 is pretty killer. FYI - more than one source has told me that Apple is working on their own special implementation of multi-GPU over Thunderbolt. That will be a big deal.

Sounds excellent.

In my opinion.. Put enough VRAM on the GPU to stop it talking constantly over thunderbolt and it will be fine. My point is - the fact that PCI-E video works means thunderbolt video will work almost as well. there's a reason video cards have gigs of VRAM - its because PCI-E 16x is not fast enough either. Load everything into VRAM, run from there.
so yes, mobile GPU is next

If that's true, then that is definitely a big deal!

Yeah, that's the education pricing. You saved $220 on the computer, $110 on the Apple Care (which you can buy within 1 year if you don't want to buy now), and the $100 app store gift card is the Back-To-School promo Apple has going now. Any "student" can get this through the Education part of Apple's online store or even in the physical Apple stores. You can also try to get a business discount in some physical Apple stores if you're not a "student" and don't want to claim you're a student (if you're not actually a student).

Kwan,
why would you post something like that? just do it and keep your mouth shut....to advertise you decieived apple is not too smart. Read your fine print and even if you don't, why post this? I like to read many of your posts...but this one is just pure idiocrocy.

Kwan,
why would you post something like that?
To explain Mike H. and also for other fellow student users to take an advantage of $100 (back to school) gift cert.

@Johnny.
Didn't mean to step on your tail and hurt you (just jokin, no hard feeling).
I simply ignored rest of your comment (respectfully), except following part;
but this one is just pure idiocrocy.

Please explain, which part of my post made you feel that?
I would aslo request you to Be calm in arguing or else I won't buy you a drink on NAB 2013 PARTY(lol)

Just FYI, I'm a full-time medical student (my third major).
