  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Macbook Pro Retina for RED editing on CS6?

To explain Mike H. and also for other fellow student users to take an advantage of $100 (back to school) gift cert.

You weren't explaining anything to me. I knew it was the education discount as I said previously. What I was saying is that you're only saving $220 on the computer after someone said you were saving $400 and getting a $100 gift card (which would be $500 total). Even with your discount on the Apple Care (which I recommend waiting to get until near the end of the first year to make sure you're keeping the computer or in case anything happens to it) it's savings of only $330 (not $400) and then the $100 gift card. Either way, good job on informing everyone that there's ways to get these computers cheaper than full price, whether if be because they're a student or eligible for a business discount. Cheers!

Kwan,
To suggest to other users to deceive apple....good intentions on your part i'm sure...is not a reasonable nor professional advise....I'm sure you want your peers, associates and clients to expect professional behavior. Do what you like, but to blast it on a public forum to deceive apple or any other company is just not something i think you want on following your reputation. But i'll leave it at that....again, many of your posts are quite helpful and worth reading...that one about go get the EDU discount because they don't ask you shit is conduct unbecoming of a professional. I just think you made a mistake is alll

Kwan,
To suggest to other users to deceive apple.
Are you serious? may be THAT'S how you read a story aloud.
and why negative comment again and again? Worry free it's OK (lol)

sorry fella, i choose to ignore you now on instead of.....
OR I need a new doctor with new location something called the Professional Building (lol - I still jokin' no hard feeling)

let's generate a good attitude before majority start to complain "hijacking a thread"

Ok, I really only want to spring for the 2.3ghz if I can... Any chance I could edit 5k at 1/4 res In premiere pro cs6 with the 2.3ghz/16gb?? And.... *GULP* how about 6K when the dragon drops?? $600 feels like a big jump for a .3 ghz boost... Will that extra CPU power really push the performance that noticeably? What I'd really love to see is two systems playing back epic video at 1/4 res... Too bad premiere isn't installed on apple store systems :)

Matthew;
Jeff had put together a very well organized presentation on 2.7 vs 2.6 (might help);

I highly doubt it. I tried the 2.3 retina with 4K @1/4 and it was playing without dropping frames until putting a cross dissolve between 2 clips. 4k @1/2 was a no go of course so I really don't think 5K 1/4 is going to fly.

If Adobe update CS6 to work with the 650m maybe we'll see some big improvements. I am waiting for my 2.7 retina and will report back when I get it. I think the 2.7 will be great for RED footage. I also tried to add the 650m to the list of OpenGL card without success. I didn't try hard because it was my friends laptop and I had limited time but if anybody has success in enabling CUDA please report back here. I was ale to enable OpenCL but it didn't seem to do improve anything. OpenCL is crippled at the moment anyway so that's probably normal.

A nice article about the 2.7 model with some performance comparison with older models. It fares quite well even to old Macpro's. Much better than my current one, for example! Of course, this doesn't take into account graphics card upgrades, but, still, very promising!

( somehow Double posted on the other macbook pro thread for the sake of discussion)

Thanks guys... I'm reconsidering looking at the 2.6 model. I'm wondering how willing they'd be to let me bring in a red mag reader and install a trial of cs6 to test in the apple store...
Oh well, it sounds like I'd better aim at future proofing myself with the 2.6.

Got my 2.7Ghz today and I've been testing Premiere CS6, FCPX, Neat Video etc.. I was able to enable CUDA in PP CS6 but it was not stable and i'm not even sure if it was accelerating anything.. It's obviously not supported so no complaint here. Same with Neat Video, the GPU report back only 33MB of CUDA GPU RAM available.

In REDCINE-X PRO I did a transcoding test with a 52sec 4K clip (4096x2160 - 1/2 Premium Debayer) and my Early 2011 MacBook Pro 17" 2.2Ghz transcoded in 8.36min while the RETINA 2.7Ghz did it in 5.5min. Nice upgrade for me there.

FCPX is absolutely sick specially with Retina. If they add RED support in X it will be absolutely insane. This program is so well optimized it's ridiculous.

I think driver / software updates are needed for CS6 suite and some plugins. It's a very powerful machine but right now it's pretty much only "tuned" for FCPX. I haven't tried Resolve yet, that's next.

Go to an Apple store and watch people try and convince themselves they need to buy a $2800 'everyday' laptop! Crazy. The Retina display is cool but a gimick.

The 17" MBP had some good features that kind of justified the price but that got axed. If your project is urgent consider one of those, the last model with the highest processor (it's more than the bump in the speed -turbo boost or something) put a SSD drive in it and go to town (http://store.apple.com/ca/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/macbook_pro/17). Since they aren't making anymore you'd likely get good value out of it for resale. They'll ship it today 'cause I'm sure they have a stack of them.

The Retina MBP outperforms the 17" MBP, and even competes with recent Mac Pros, has 2 Thunderbolt ports, 2 USB3 ports, and HDMI output. It's a beast of a machine. Anyone needing to buy a new MBP I don't see why they'd pick a 17" over the Retina.... really, it's like a no-brainer.

Robino_J, please remember to post your Resolve results. I have the same 17" with the Retina on the way and curious to know how much better the Retina will perform with it. Thanks!

Far from a gimmick. Quite functional really. For anyone who spends hours writing code or looking at images, the extra detail or sharper text is a godsend. I do agree that not everyone "needs" the new MBP and it is more expensive than a lot of alternatives with similar CPU power. For those of us who need a powerful laptop with fast connectivity, they're a great deal. Dual USB3 and Dual Thunderbolt pretty much lets you connect anything you want -- of course, you need Thunderbolt to whatever adapters for a lot of things, but the ability is there. For us power users, $2800 on a laptop is hardly anything to flinch at. I've spent more on HP and Dell laptops in the past than I just spent on a maxed-out MBP retina... I can use the power, the resolution, etc.. For for most people drooling over it at the Apple Store, not so much... Most of them are just ogling the screen and don't have the faintest clue as to what a Thunderbolt port can be used for or why they would want one.

I've made this same recommendation to a few people lately. It's a great way to go, if you don't need the CPU power -- you get the larger screen in a package that's not much larger than the 15" when folded up. It is however noticeably heavier and it sure feels a lot larger if you whip one out to work on an airplane. :) That said, the 2011 17" is great -- you get a Thunderbolt port and it still has ExpressCard. You can still get the quad-core i7 CPU. Only thing it really lacks is the new USB3 ports. And the new CPUs and RAM are considerably faster than last year's models. Comparing the 2.3GHz retina model to the 2.3GHz quad-core i7 2011 MBP, there's a 15% boost in general CPU performance and a 17% boost in memory throughput. And you can get that increase applied to a 2.6 or 2.7 GHz CPU as well.

Who knows what they did with the 17". It seems like the 17" incarnation of the "old style" is indeed discontinued. There are rumors circulating about a 17" retina model, which makes sense, but it may be a ways off if they do build it. I like the 17" when it's on a desk and I'm working on it. But when it comes to being a portable system, what I mostly need my laptops for, I hate lugging around anything with a screen 16" or larger. Personal preference for sure, but I know I'm not alone in that.

Just got my MBPR up and running. Have the maxed out 2.7GHz, 16GB ram, 512GB HD.

Playing r3ds off the internal flash drive in RCXPro its plowing through 5k 16x9 at 1/8th res, 4k 16x9 at 1/4 res and 2k WS at 1/2 res. Pretty sweet.....

Fired up Resolve for a second and it warned about the graphics card being unsupported. Playback was really slow but it wasn't freaking out with crazy color patterns like it does sometimes. Should probably encourage BM to work on support for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M.

Having to get used to this new display which is pretty sweet in the retina supported Aperture. Still haven't gotten over my old hires antiglare display from my last laptop though.... That was my fav laptop ever.

We have the same machine, it's really a beast!

For resolve maybe try installing the latest CUDA driver if you haven't already. http://www.nvidia.com/object/mac-driver-archive.html

Blackmagic design also released Desktop Studio 9.5.3 this morning if you have their hardware..

Side note: Looking at picture thumbnails in iPhoto is surreal. The experience is as if you were looking at a physical slide light box. It's crazy.

Nice to hear you're both overall pleased. I have a 2.7, 16GB, 768GB on order myself. Bummer about the lack of 650M support in Resolve. Resolve 9 comes out next month so hopefully they'll have support in that release. Have you done any transcoding of 5K or 4K on RCXP? Curious to know how long that takes and in comparison to a 2011 17" MBP which I'll be transitioning from.

Transcoding 4K - 52:19sec Clip @ 1/2 Premium Debayer

MACBOOK PRO (early 2011 2.2Ghz) = 8:36min
RETINA MACBOOK PRO 2.7Ghz = 5:53min
