  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Mac vs. Windows...

Windows

The reason is quite simple: more hardware options, more software choices from more diverse range of vendors.
It is the leading OS any way you look at it and whether you like it or not, de-facto standard.

This pretty much says it for me... plus the years of familiarity factor.

Oh, and I like Windows 8 very much.

Having owned 2 Mac Pros, I'd go Windows all the way. Windows is my current set-up and I doubt I'd ever go back to Mac considering the hell you have to go through (and the hell your pocket has to go through) just to upgrade components.

I swing both ways!

Mac for the easy ProRes stuff from the Atomos Ninja and then my beefier Windows 8 machine for the heavy-lifting R3D footage..

Love the look and feel of Mac OSX but WIn8 is very slowly catching up...

Mac Air for sales and small DIT stuff. great machine that still turns heads..

mac all the way for roughly 15 years. but apple really turned into an ever growing disappointment over the last few years. last week I called apple support about an issue I had with their logic pro software and the first guy that answered the phone had me spell "logic" because he claimed they didnt have any software by that name............. felt like the last straw. so now I'm going to build my own windows workstation.

Apple won't fail to deliver a good production box

There are too many major software manufacturers who invested a lot into the OSX platform, there are too many apple users that use Apple computers professionally, and finally there is no reason why the content creation for iPhone and iPad must be done on a PC if an Apple device could do it as good.

This said, in my shop we used to have an HP Z800 for software reasons. Good peace of technology, windows XP64 and later W7 never let us me down but as an post production machine its was too risky to have it connected to the net. A real con against Windows.

Macs are good value for the money, run for years and the OS is stable, secure and ergonomically designed. There are many, many good reasons to buy a pc but for postproduction Mac was always the more reliable, more hassle-free solution.

Windows .Easy to build a custom made work station and easy to upgrade.

Windows (7), no idea where Microsoft are heading with Windows 8, just plain embarassing!

I worked for Apple for a bit and got freaked out by the number of product failures that occured the week the replacement product was announced. I don't trust them.

I use em all (including LINUX CentOS), with also the "Whatever gets the job done" philosophy. That being said I like open source Linux, and I like windows option (choice of hardware, software, spare parts, etc...).
For the people having problem, crash and so on with Windows, I think you should try a BOXX or high end HP computer.

Definitely Mac.

It's definitely a tough relationship with Apple though. The FCPX thing was a real blow, a slap in the face to every FCP editor in the game. A big F U pretty much. I hate FCPX with a passion. But I just can't see myself leaving the OSX world for windows. OSX simply provides a nicer working environment and makes that you're on a computer almost transparent in a way I can't describe. I like the closed ecosystem. Designing the OS to work on Apple hardware is the key. It's why RED doesn't allow 3rd party REDMAGS and such. They need to know their shit will work as it should.

I do wish RED had some influence on the MacPro development though...

I'm (still) all on Mac...
Switched over when I started my education in the field of media (graphics, print, video) - back then on G4 Towers still running 9.1-9.2 Classic... My first job was "performed" on a G3 B&W (horrible Photoshop experience on that machine - but well, I learned how to do stuff in a fashion where I use only the really necessary steps to get a task done)...

Can't help it but it still feels good to me to be on a Mac... :)
Sure - the Finder is like a broken leg at times (compared to like file commander stuff on Windows), the Hardware is not on par with Windows-workstations currently (compared to high-end HP or Dell towers) and so on. But I'm just not that happy sitting in front of a Windows machine... Maybe it is some sort of racism - don't ask me :D But that's just how it is... I'm working in a mixed environment where we also use Windows Machines but my personal workspace is all Mac (Mac Pro) and I'm totally happy with that - and for Video we're all ProRes and h.264/.mp4 so we're doing that on Mac usually (MEDIA100/FCP Studio/Sorenson Squeeze). For DIT stuff I use my private MBP (outfitted with 2 SSD's) and I'm also very happy with that.

Before I went Mac I was all Windows (this was back at Win 2000/ME/XP times tho), I was happy back then...
But now; why looking or even switching back when I'm totally happy with OSX ;)

One thing I always noticed about PCs is that they are always "doing something" Seriously, why is the hard drive of a PC always chugging along as if constantly processing stuff? My Macs just sit silently and let me do my job.

It's also suicide to have an ethernet cord plugged into a PC without having Norton running, which pretty much halves you're horsepower.

I love Windows PCs for the use of use. Just built a workstation this morning... if a better option comes up, I can easily change a component. That being said... Apple iPhones and iPads are great. But also here Microsoft seems great solutions with Phone 8 and Windows 8.

Anyway... Apple is expensive and inflexible, so that I stick to PC as long as money plays a role when buying equipment

Mac.
Please Jim, Mac. Don't make me use Windows. Please. I'm hoping to get to retirement before Apple really sinks their "Pro" boat...
;)
Cheers,
Harry

Windows has a (deserved) reputation in the past for lack of security, but that changed when MicroSoft took the bull by the horns and made Security Essentials available (for free) to Vista and Windows 7 owners. For Windows 8 they do the same thing using Windows Defender. The problem with Windows being less secure isn't so much the Operating System's fault as much as it is the operators. I think that would (and maybe will be as hackers are starting to target Macs) be a problem for Apple users if they were a financially fitting target. (Read: cost effective for the hackers)

Anyone who pays attention to security and doesn't open email from Nigerian Princes should never have a security problem.

I had the pleasure of sitting at the HP/RED Post Production Training at NAB 2013.
However, having to re-install the drivers for the ROCKET at the start of the class put a bad taste in my mouth.
Dont get me wrong, the HP provided was rocking.
I get that since I use Windows for all my Maya needs.
I just want a system that works smoothly.
They all have their quirks :P

And Ive been using Mac, Windows and Unix since the beginning.

Mac.

Apple doesn't always get it right but I feel like they've always been concerned with user experience where the Windows world has only (relatively) recently started to seriously give it the attention it deserves.

I can see how for people who like to customize hardware or are big DIYers, PCs are probably a better fit. They provide an outlet and type of user experience that Macs don't really offer. It's obviously not the only reason to like PCs but I think it's a significant one, at least for the people I know who prefer it.

I've never been un under-the-hood type of tinkerer when it comes to machines.
