Mac vs. Windows...

W have both here, including a 3 year old 12 core Mac Pro. It would cost almost as much to get an equal performing PC today as my Mac Pro cost 3 years ago.

Mac OS is fast and elegant - and light. I think you need higher gear spec for the same performance when you switch.

I am a Mac guy, many times I have switched to windows, and every time there were many security issues and issues pertaining to upkeep. I have not had a single issue with my macs until last year when the trackpad went down, it was fixed the same day.

Thunderbolt, hopefully Thunderbolt II ... I am concerned about their practices overseas... Some of which is dictated by not enough Engineers at a certain level, but certainly a price issue for them. If RED found a way to stay American made, Apple should be able to as well.

But, yes.

I want my preferred Mac interface, open and powerful hardware, and somebody to stand by it and tell me its going to work.

Jim, don't you have enough balls in the air or are you looking to juggle another?

I have used Mac since the 80's for the same reason i shoot on RED.

Technology changes but both companies have a can do attitude and continue to push new ideas even if these ideas may be unpopular.

However frustrating Mac have been recently on all products, I switched in 2003.
No reason to go back to PC just yet.

DNXHD and proress is not much of a difference only that one means trouble on one of the platforms... so if you swap to DNXhd you do not need to run on mac...

Agreed. The thing is that I'm fine with trying new tech (codecs for that matter), but most of the post houses and / or production companies around here are scared to try new workflows. And unfortunately, I'm not that big of a trendsetter. Yet :) I don't mind working with DNxHD on Mac OR PC, it's really dependant on the other companies I work with.

Neither. Well.... Technically, I use Linux as a host OS and just run Windows inside virtualbox for photoshop (runs totally smooth), video however - I'm still tied down to a physical Windows install on another drive partition..... but not for much longer. Lightworks is being released for Linux (Ubuntu) - the ability for filmmakers to drop both Mac and Windows has officially arrived. Plenty high end VFX and color correction suits are availalbe in Linux, now you can finally do your editoral work. About. Freaking. Time. This is probably gonna be a huge game changer for all the people using Windows who hate it and all the people using Mac that have lost faith that Apple will continue to service their needs.

I switched to windows for 1 1/2 years. Was a nightmare. I was working more on the machine then with it. Every little update created problems. In the middle of a project PPR stopped working and Adobe told me the next update would fix it...but I couldn´t wait 2 month. So I switched back to Mac. With Mac I feel comfortable since the 90ties. I can run windows on it if I need it and have all the Mac programs on top. I like FCPX now, and I love how RedcineX works flawless on my Mac Pro and my Laptop. It does not bother me much to not have the latest CPU´s in my tower, because I have a RR in it. I hope Apple does not give up their proline hardware and keeps developing FCPX.

Macs restrict you.... It's their way or no way. PC is for people who need and want flexibility and options. Same reason I let go of my IPhone....
I like to master my tools, not my tools be the master of me.

RED feels Appleish.

I will strive and stick with Apple till i can no longer.

There is a market out there in the world for someone to create a high end dependable, well supported and proven

HACKENTOSH.
If some good company makes that Id be quite interested.
A Hackentosh we all would want with all the bells and whistles
including THUNDERBOLT, USB3 and plenty of space for more than just 4 internal drives and extra expansion slots for Cards.

I believe 2014 will be the year where Mac finally catches up again with a complete solution for all that we need (including native mac 4k display).
They better hurry. I fear that even before Steve Jobs died, the company took a major shift and has become a consumer electronics company that also had a side business making computers... not the opposite. Their lack of interest in the professional film and sound business is a tragic story. I would hate to see Macs fade away from being used by editors, mixers, colorists, and visual effects people, but I think we're headed down that road.

Red own very important IP, .R3D and .RED files. This to me is a 'closed' eco system. However, the essence within those wrappers are RAW......so in effect, they are offering something open, the same that everyone else is aiming for in the stills and motion world. CinemaDNG for example, is RAW. As much as IP is important, i don't like to be tied down too much to one supplier and for that very reason, i'm very anti Apple. ProRes has been nothing but a nightmare over the last few years, especially the ability to not be able to write ProRes files on a PC until very recently.

I'm a PC man for many reasons. Choice of GFX cards, motherboards.....components in general. Ok, things were a little iffy with windows, but W7 x64 is rock solid.....W8 scares me a little though. I'd rather buy into a 'closed IP eco system' like RED, but only when safe in the knowledge they're going to play nicely with both platforms.

To answer the question directly, it's PC for me.

If RED were to only make software like RCX for MAC, then i would seriously reconsider buying into that kind of brand. It's companies like Adobe who stick with both platforms 50/50 that i like. Sure, it's a pain for engineering, but it helps big time :)

Mac's for show, PC's for the pro ;)
