  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

M-X at ISO 2000...

Agreed. You can make any film for any budget. As long as you (the filmmaker) understand that whether it will be any good or not has nothing to do with how much money you spend.

That is a ridiculous statement.

I'm starting to understand why David doesn't want to read your posts.

Firelight was a film made in 1964 for $500.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind was made in 1977 for $19.4m.

Both have the same director, both have similar plots and both made money.

Anyone who believes that money is stopping them from telling a story is not much of a storyteller.

Rob we are going to have to nickname you "Flameboy". I'll try to find you a good avatar to match.

Use of lenses

Use of lenses

Yes, it will be easier to stop down now when necessary, or use a special lens that is slower, or use slow telephotos for night exteriors, etc.

Thats actually, the only thing that excited me was the ability to use slower lenses and still light minimally. Thanks For the post

I would say... since I was there, that David did this as a favor to us, as did Leo. David lit the scene while Jeff was busy eleswhere. Jeff operated and Steve Meizler was the 1st AC. All four are all-world and we appreciate the time they spent more than we can express.

I definitely see how the new M-X is a large step forward, i really had to crush hard to clean the blacks, as you can see how there's no falloff, it's just a cliff.

I can't wait for the new sensor!!! I did another test that I never published, me holding dual torches in a cave deep underground away from all light. I'll have to redo my test with M-X :-D

To clarify a little, you probably missed Jeff lighting because he was off setting the lights, not "busy elsewhere". Jeff was short handed during the test. He gave me a detailed report of how he lit it just after the test. We are partners in a camera rental company that is all arri with one red. I hope to use the M-X on "Dark Deal" with Director Andrzej Bartkowiak. Arri was not happy when they found out. We are going to use Hawk 2.0x Anamorphic's with 2 D21's (because production owns them), and one red m-x using the 1.3x hawks on first unit. I am going to shoot second unit with all M-X and Hawk 1.3x, providing I can get my red upgraded and Keslow has the cameras. Hope I will not have to shoot with all D21's.

I have tried to update my user name from VJR to Vern Nobles Jr. That is why I put my real name at bottom of post.

Cheers,
Vern Nobles Jr.

Andrzej Bartkowiak, cinematographer from the Devils Advocate, and Speed? Could you share who put in the request for Reds?

It was a joint effort between Andrzej and Myself to production. Jeff Croenwerth ASC is my partner in our rental company and been shooting with them on Social Network. They have been working perfect. The D21 is two slow for some of the nite work and I need high speed for the 2ed Unit. With the ISO and camera speed advantage we were able to sell the Red X to production.

True, you can make certain good films with tiny budgets, but only certain types. But many types of films necessarily cost money. You could not shoot Laurence of Arabia on a low budget, and yet this is a type of story also worth telling.

Film making is not just storytelling - we have books and plays for that. Film making is also visual and sonic enchantment.

Even a small film, even the remake of "My Dinner with Andre", can benefit from more rehearsal and shooting time, before the days of digital, more film stock, more deliberate choices in locations and accessories and sets - not just "what our uncle was willing to lend us". Money makes you a decider, not an adapter to luck and circumstance, to a greater degree (never 100% mind you but...). As such, in some sense, the more money you have, the more you can be an artist, because an artist makes choices based on their vision, not based on a very limited available set of free options.

I jumped at you because you sounded like the kind of producer that makes our lives miserable - I realize now that is not what you meant, but it's still a dangerous idea. If you want to practice an art form where money doesn't make a difference, write books, paint...

People cost money, tools cost money, and they do make ANY film better than it would otherwise be. On the flip side, maybe you did not like "Transformers', and maybe I didn't either, but imagine if that film was made with $500 000, with the same script, how extra-awful it would be. Now imagine "When Harry Met Sally", a script and character driven film if there ever was one, with bad makeup, rough lighting, the occasional continuity error and the actors exhausted form an indy film schedule. I think you get my point.

Now if David doesn't like me, that's his right. Some people like me, and some people don't. I on other hand find his posts fascinating and wish I had more time to read more of them, but if that respect runs only one way that's fine. He still has mine.

I'm very glad he's doing another film soon. I too look forward to seeing it.

I don't mean to flame anybody, or to insult anybody. I do think that many commonly held beliefs are not above being challenged.

The entire Red company was born out of that philosophy so...
