  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

M-Logic RED Rocket enclosure JUST WORKS

I have just bought my RED Rocket M Link enclosure.

I was just wondering if anyone else knows on whether it can be turned off or ejected. Should I shut down the computer every time I want to use it?

Thanks in advance.

Conjecture on usability of an RR-X in an Expansion Chassis? How much bandwicth is the thing gonna need? If the new card could be fully functional with R2Mac2 (AKA iTrashCan) then that would keep me out of PC land for my next tower.

You may want to contact M-Logic...mine never gets hot to the touch, even after 12 hours solid. The fan should also spin down when you aren't using the Rocket.

it has been hot after the last encoding session. i'm very satisfied with the speed even with this pci 4x setup.
it has been loud. and yes, it spins down when not used :-)

nice device...

Most of the thunderbolt enclosures (Magma and Sonnet at least, not sure about the M-Logic) only require changing out the TB1 adapter card to a TB2 adapter card, and they should then be TB2 compliant. TB2 basically lets one device use both of the PCIe Gen2 x4-lane channels to get x8 Gen2 PCI-e lanes total. The red rocket is a Gen1 PCIe x8 card, which is basically the same bandwidth of Gen2 PCIe x4, which is why the red rocket card doesn't completely over-saturation a TB connection and won't benefit much from TB2. The rocket-x spec indicates its PCIe x16 but doesn't indicate Gen1 or Gen2, and the rocket-x will definitely benefit from TB2 but will probably saturate the TB2 connection unless you can run dual cables for x16 effective lanes.

The rocket-x requires an additional power connection and will generate more heat than the current rocket, one benefit of the Magma case is the hot swap case fan, added card blower, and additional power connections, and enough additional space to add more case fans or coolers if desired. Since I started running x3 PCIe cards (red rocket, HBA raid controller, eSATA 6Gb) my TB case would get warm after a while, so I recently set the case fan switch to high speed mode and added a Noctua 80mm x 25mm front fan and modded a Noctua 92mm x 14mm side fan. The side fan doesn't interfere with any of the PCIe cards and the case is always cold, it never warms up (even with overnight transcodes), and the TB case is still relatively quiet (outputs less noise than any of my raid towers or normal computer towers). I like how compact the M-Logic is but I'm not sure about how well the M-Logic or Sonnet cases are going cool a rocket-x card.

The tech spec says the rocket-x will be at least x5 faster then the current red rocket, which is equal to a Gen1 x8 = Gen2 x4 = Gen3 x2 lane speeds, so in all likelihood the rocket-x will be PCIe Gen2 x16 or Gen3 x8 compatible. One benefit of TB2 is suppose to be the ability to run multiple cables for aggregate bandwidth. So in theory a single TB cable will still run x8 Gen2 lanes or equivalent to x4 Gen3 lanes. Or in short the rocket-x should still run at half its potential speed over a single TB cable, and potentially at full speed over x2 TB cables. My understanding is TB2 makes use of current TB cables and doesn't use a newer faster cable.

Does anyone recommend a cheap PCI card with a SAS2 connector compatible with the Mlink enclosure ? We just would like to add SAS connectivity to our Macbook Air via thunderbolt to use a HP LTO-5 external drive. Unless there is something cheaper than buying this Mlink+ a PCI card ?

Thanks,

Kristin

I just got this as well! Put it in the box, plugged it in, installed the Rocket driver and tada!

I've only had it in use for a couple days but have been pleasantly surprised. It just works.

Hi guys I just received this product does anyone know of any vids on how to open and install the rocket?

There was no instructions and I've never used one before

Thanks in advance

Just got a sneak peak at M-Logic's Rocket-X solution and it is looking awesome! Should be shipping around the same time as Rocket-X.

Is their a new ETA on the M-Logic's Rocket-X solution???
