Now that they are in camera it's probably a good idea to understand what they do, what they are for and how they can affect the image you are recording.

Red does provide LUTS- REDcolor2,3,4 REDgamma2,3,4 REDlogfilm are all REDluts.

you can now apply independant Monitor LUTS in camera, but it is important to understand what a LUT does and how in camera LUTS can impact exposure.

Have a look at the video on this link as a good primer to LUTS.

For now it's exclusively RED LUTS, but everyone should check this out.

These are some very basic RED LOOK LUTS you can create in in camera or with RCX. These are all looks that can be created in RCX exported, then imported into the camera as a LOOK file via SSD.

Download the EPIC/SCARLET LOOK files and R3D here.

Thanks

I don't really understand what he was trying to explain in that video more than "exposure is important". That I think we can all agree to. :)

Here is a short explination what differs a 1D lut and a 3D lut, and what we want is 3D luts... now we only have 1D luts in camera as I understand, which is pretty much just as limited as the old look files in RCX, no? I mean they can be done in any grading toolset but they can not really warp/remap colours like a 3D lut can.

Thanks for posting here Bjorn.

I think with any new tool or feature there should be some basic understanding. You have boatloads!

Anyone using LUTs outside of the basic set RED offers, monitoring or otherwise, should understand the positives and when and how to be cautious with their use.

Mainly, I think the big benefit would be on monitoring paths, but the misuse or misunderstanding of the capabilities can further create exposure issues if one is not fully aware of their uses.

I just ust wanted to offer a primer and anything anyone wants to add is welcome.

They are here, let's make the very best of them.

I'll most likely be sticking exclusively to RED LUTS, but everyone should check this out.

I thought we can NOT add 3d 3rd party LUTs in camera, Just assign different 1d LUTs to different outputs. But I haven't installed the latest beta, I hope I'm wrong.

You can NOT current load a custom 3D LUT (or even a 1D LUT) into a DSMC camera.

There is a massive amount of misinformation out there and general lack of understanding about 3D LUTs and LUTs in general. I'm dying to post a long rant on all my perspectives on the subject - but I need to get all these HOTLINK pre-orders our first.

But again - you can NOT current load a custom 3D LUT (or even a 1D LUT) into a DSMC camera.

corrected. I should have been more clear about 1D 3D and monitor LUT's...

I am glad you are here Mark. You are the most passionate LUT man I know. Your rant would be very useful in helping folks out. :)

Well ... Steve Shaw eats LUTs for breakfast - and Hrvoje Simic sees the same future I see. Color correction will radically change in a few years. It's coming. I've seen one of the mind bending tools that will come to market in about a year.

Aha, Did not know, Yes I was under the impression from reading this forum and the firmware updatenotes that we could load 1d luts into camera. but I guess not. Our camera is out on a feature all month so I have not been able to play with it or the new update. So why has it been so much hurray and lut in camera talk here lately, was it just Jarreds picture of that menu from R&D team that got everyone carried away?

But it's possible to swap to ACES now, or no?

Great,

I hope they come to the party. we need a radical LUT thread to stay ahead of the "curve" (pun intended).

Redusers need a good primer in this area.

You are correct, as mark pointed out. I was a bit sloppy in my initial post.

Cheers,

You can apply preset, predefined 1D LUT choices to independent monitor paths.

Hmm, I understand where all the misconception comes from, calling it "independent display lut"... is probably misleading more people than me to think that it's about something more than different red presets to different monitor outputs. But I guess not, even though I have no doubt that it's coming quite soon.

yup. even got me until I went back and looked at it and Mark pointed it out.
Hence the need to help folks navigate this area.
