  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Look what arrived today! Oh man. Finally!

To be honest there are some things that have come to disappoint me about this camera. I'm honestly shocked.
 
Corey do share! I know with the recent upgrades, they've resolved some issues and improved the image. But I'm curious to your disappointments.

I'm going to do a full review for my YouTube channel. First off the sensor is amazing and lowlight is great. Not sure how I feel about the standard filter as native ISO is 800. I'm used to 320 on dragon. Overall for $30k I would have thought 24p with Hdr in 8k would have been supported. My $12k scarlet dragon did 5k Hdr and the epic dragon was 6k Hdr. So all the epic W is to me is a nerfed down weapon. It's basically in the position scarlet dragon was.

I'm upset that I have a 6k camera that is 8k for bragging rights only. Realistically. There is more to filming then straight 24p. Don't get me wrong camera is beautiful, but let's be honest HDR in 8k should have been included in a camera that cost more than a used corvette.

Bad:
1. Want to shoot HDR? Forget about it 19fps max in 8k & 22fps in 7k. Want HDR? You Must go to 6k! Pointlessly buy 8k camera for that!
2. No 48p or 60p
3. Screen glitches & a few other things
4. No support for any image stabilization on third party lenses!

Good:
1. Great lowlight
2. IQ is great low noise floor
3. Audio is light years ahead of dragon (mono or stereo now works, can plug rode mics right into module)
4. Lighter than the dragon brain
5. Looks good
6. Cooling setup (The vent for heat is on the lower back part of brain, heat rises so it will actually rise and vent against the V Mount battery. That means the battery will last longer I cold shooting possibly.)
 
How often do you need HDR? I almost never use it. Too many artifacts. Helium has plenty of DR for most situations.

Mystified as to how you might have missed (1) and (2) from the specs. I can see being bummed about (3) and (4), both of which future firmware releases may be able to improve and/or support. But don't see how one can be disappointed about specs that were known up-front. Epic-W really is an 8K/24p camera w/o HDRX, or a more featureful 6K camera if you choose to use it that way. And of course for true HFR stuff, more like a 3K or 2K camera...

I was misinformed at the store. I asked if it did HDRX in 8k and he ended up giving me a weapon and didn't have a epic-w to show me.

I already knew it didn't do 60p however combined with no hdrx is really a disappointment at this price point.
