  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lomo Anamorphics - Too Good to be true?

ha ha ha ... true .... thats what i thought as well ... since the link for the livechat was from this shady mail ....

but ma prblem is, i already commited to the purchase and probably have to go down the road all the way: Paying - not getting anything - requesting refund - hopefully getting refund .... so be it

Means, even if you guys helped me to evade a scam, i still have to pay ... holy ****

Why do you have to pay?

I have to admit, the pasted livechat is pretty funny - and sort of goes to show what we were all talking about (the fact that Ebay Reps can only see data that is in front of them - and make choices based on that).

You cannot be forced into something that is an obvious fraud.

Point of interest is that the item was not 'won' or 'purchased' via Ebay.

They sent you an invoice - and the listing asked you to contact the 'false' seller via emal - and that (in itself) breeches Ebay's own rules.

Do not send anything and simply raise a ticket on this - using all the info you have (I'd suggest making an off-line copy of the pages too).

Plus (just sprang to mind!) is the original listing/seller is not the same as the account you're being asked to pay into.

Don't bother with livechat - go via email.

i really hope you did not western union money, not only was the auction a scam but the live chat was too, you will never see the item or get a refund, ever. you are only protected if you pay through paypal, if not, you are out of luck. sorry.
they pray on people that will, just to get a deal, go against ebays policy and do the deal outside of the auction place, ebay is not responsible for anything once you do that.

That "representative" is not an eBay rep, but someone who works with the scammer. Look closely at the URL and if the domain is anything other than eBay.com (or another country) it serves as further proof.

DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY.

EBAY WILL NOT REFUND IT.

You haven't committed to anything. Ebay will NEVER allow - much less encourage - a Western Union payment. That was NOT an eBay rep you were chatting with.

Agree with Martin here.

As I said, forget live-chat via your link - go in via Ebay and give a transaction number... or do it via email.

I think that's the thing that's stressing Sascha... as far as I can see, there's no commitment and it's not via Ebay.

The line in the 'live chat' that's funny is the one about the forum 'Do they know better than Ebay?' cracks me up :)

Julia looks like a minx!

Long time user of ebay never been scammed yet.

But this is so not ebay , ebay strictly warn about using western union or direct deposits. This clearly breaches their requirements as such this sale is void. The pics are hijacked. Forget about it

OR For fun maybe ask Julia out for a date. But I think you'll have to meet up in the Eastern Europe or Nigeria ; )

Hej Mates ... Thanx a lot 4 all the advices ... you saved me a lot of bucks ... thanx a heep ... so i'll just sit back and relax now ... and maybe there will be a lens-company someday that produces affordable anas ... until then i'll be okay with my cheap anamorphic adapter from japan ;-))

Well - keep us updated if you get any more mails - or maybe report to Ebay anyway... and try to get a date with 'Julia' - LOL.

BTW - SLR Magic are working on a DSLR priced lens that is being designed for 1:33 (so the desqueeze works for 16:9 sensor)... so that might be useful - especially if Scarlet ends up without specialist ana modes (which are X2).

Will do ... he he ... Julia, probably has a beard and smells like a bottle of Vodka ;-)
Heard about the SLR Magic ... the Demo-Video looked very promising ... problem here in switzerland is: We do have big bad Banks but we don't have one single Rental-House that provides Anamorphic Lenses. I would have loved to shoot with HAWKs ... the Vintage 74 Series is amazing ... but the closest to rent these Babies over here is in Germany ;-) ... But Anamorphic Stuff is rather a Hobby ... my Clients don't care bout Anamorphics ;-) fortunately .... wouldn't really like to carry this monster around the whole Day: ;-))

Absolutely not.. you have not bought this thru ebay.
This is a reccurring scam where people hijack accounts
send copy to Spoof@ebay.com

I absolutely agree with Chris. This time of year it is very common to see these kind of scams. Normally, the hacker will collect high value auction details and pictures and use these to create an auction in a hacked Ebay account. Normally I can spot these a mile away. Here are some tips:

-The alleged Ebay seller normally sells completely unrelated items (example, someone who normally sells clothing, suddenly lists high-end camera gear). Do your research and look at the seller's past feedback and other recent and current auctions
-There is a massive listing of high-value items with low prices. Often, there is a starting price under $10; an effort to avoid Ebay's scanning algorythms. I have actually seen hundreds and thousands of items that, together, total out at several million dollars worth of gear. Short of Abel Cine liquidating their entire business (which would be well-publicized), this is a fairy tale.
-often there are multiple listings of a rare item (how many people have three 50mm Zeiss Master Primes, let alone are parting with all three at once).
-are always high-value. this does not happen with a bag of C-47s
-Hackers often target Ebay seller accounts that have not had any activity for a long time. Again, reserach the feedback and recent auction activity.
-Usually have short durations such as 1 or 3-day listings (perhaps hoping to both avoid detection by Ebay's algorythms, while also inducing panic in the potential buyer
--and as you point out, these normally want you to contact the seller at a private email account listed in the description (which is against Ebay rules).

-a really important point is that the Description section is not actually text, but a image file that is uploaded. The scammers use a picture to avoid a text-based search for illegal selling terms (such as contact information) used by Ebay's computers. I normally see a blurred edge to what should be sharp text, kind of a fuzzy bleeding like you see when you do bad greenscreen work.

-Finally, settlement by Western Union is a dead giveaway. Even the once-questionable Russian sellers of glass have taken the steps to set up Paypal accounts or enlist US-based proxies.

Everybody should do their part to flag these scams by clicking on the Report Item in the auction. Its kinda like Craigslist, when enough people flag this stuff, Ebay wakes up.

Here is a perfect example of what I am talking about:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Astro-Berli...41384713?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item3ccd3d4e09

Hundreds of listings at a low starting price of $9.69. All are high value items. Seller has not had a lot of recent activity. Normally deals with books and common household items. He is listing FOUR Canon 400mm EF lenses. FOUR! A large rental house probably does not have FOUR super long telephoto lenses like the Canon 400mm.

And all the camera gear alone is worth six-figures, notwithstanding all the other items, like a RPP 300mm, a Zeiss lens set, and a slew of cameras.

And he wanst you to contact him offline to buy it now. Note also that every item has a Buy It Now price of $1925 listed in the description.

Please report this seller.

And the seller's probably been hacked (as we all discussed before) - his recent history of sales really doesn't match the crazy amount of new listings - http://www.ebay.com/csc/*mad*hatter..._Complete=1&_ipg=200&_since=15&_sop=13&_rdc=1 vs http://www.ebay.com/sch/*mad*hatters*tea*party5052/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

Also note there's a new looking text style listing - that's still an image.

Ebay really should be faster - if we can detect patterns, it must be easy for them...
