Was wondering if anyone could explain to me this sudden spike in prices for Lomo Anamorphic Lenses. I've been researching these lenses for the past year or so and as long as I can remember the Square Fronts were going for anywhere between $1500-$2500 depending on condition. And the Round Fronts went for $3000-$4000 again, depending on condition. Now all of a sudden the prices have seemed to spike up more than double to $7900-$8100 per lens?? I understand supply and demand but what justifies such a huge price increase. Any thoughts?

I was wondering the same actually. The prices have gone up a lot.

It's the market.

There are a lot more camera owners now looking for PL lenses in general - you'll notice that a lot of cine glass has gone up in price.

These spikes happen when there's a big increase in user bases - there are now lots of Scarlet users who are looking at PL and specialty glass... the same thing happened when the RED first came out - there was a blight on PL glass in general and prices increased.

With the advent of so many S35 cameras too, there is a mini gold-rush.

Most of the Squarefronts being sold are older 60's versions now - it's rare to get very good condition 70's and 80's ones. A lot of the stock of Roundfronts are ones that are being retired from service... so really it's just a case of a massive increase in user base and a dwindling supply of lenses.

Buying now won't leave you out of pocket, as this price will stay (IMO) as this becomes the normal standard for them. They're still substantially cheaper than other antique cine anamorphics.

$7000-$8000 those are new, aren't them? For the used ones it runs for $3000-$5000.

None of these are new - they stopped making them in the late 80's & early 90's.

Some of the ones that are for sale/sold recently are early 80's ones... they are in good condition and may have had minimal use... but not 'new' in the sense of a modern lens that's 'new in a box'.

Ebay has been strange recently, with some going cheap and some going at high prices. But most of these (although not all) are original mounts (OCT-19).

Note that the various Lomo Ana's for sale by vendors here all tend to be PL remounted. That's an easy job on Roundfronts (mount change and collimation) but a send to a specialist job for the Squarefronts, as partial dissassembly is required.

PL can add $300-$500 (or more) to a lens cost.

And to add to the Anamorphic up and down pricing that's going on...

A set of 50mm/75mm/100mm & 150mm (all PL & in a case!) that went for $10K

Just goes to show how wild variations can be!

Shame I missed out on this one :emote_rainshower:

Yes - I was too late to the party...

Double damn!!! :cryin:

I mean like-new or never used before.

For the listing on Cinematography.com I think 10K is minimum for the set and he would sell it to the highest bidder.

Saw a pristine looking 35mm Sqaure Front w/PL on ebay two months ago sell for $7000. within a couple of days. With all the Canon 5D's etc. out there I wouldn't be surprised to see prices clime further.

The $10K listing went for $10K. Somebody got lucky at that price.

In terms of 'like new' that's a hard one - I've purchased 'like new/unused' lenses before and, looking at them, you can see they've had 'light use'. It all depends how you view things really :)

The 35mm Squarefront is the rare one now - and that will sell quickly... wish i had 3 or 4 of them!
