  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Are Moviegoers Tired of 3D...or just the $15 Prices...?

3d alone is a $5 premium here in Burbank CA. The funny thing is a good 3D flick looks pretty good in 2D as well. I think I'll be skipping this novelty from now on, at least until they do away with the premium altogether.

I heard from a friend that by next year you will be able to watch movies that are in the theater at home by ordering them through your cable provider (perhaps to fight piracy by making it easily available). When/if that happens I believe theaters will be lowering their prices ; )

Although shrek 4 failed to capitalize (relative to previous openings) perhaps 3d fatigue is setting in (hopefully)

The only way I'll see a 3D movie is for free and even then I'd still be wanted to watch a 2D version. I see a lot of 3D over at Disney and Fox, when I work over there in the projection department. I can't wait for 3D to fade out...just like it did in the past. The only good thing about it is that its pushing more digital projectors into cinemas.

You and me both Andrew...

Im so sick of the 3d fad!

I just worked on a promo for a new feature in 3D the other day..

so over it..

the rigs are ridiculously large..
and 3D just gives me a headache... GO AWAY already!!

this would be awesome..

theaters will never go away (thank God).. because i LOVE seeing a movie on the big screen...

but they will be forced to lower prices..

I remember when it was $3.50 matinée
$6.50 for night

now its like 12 bucks

The 3d experience in theaters does suck, with light levels at 3 or 4 foot lambert the norm in 3d when it should be 15. Also the filthy glasses are not fun, you should keep them and re-use them as your own pair. And yea it is driving digital projectors but they are putting in silver screens with them which are terrible for viewing 2d stuff. They need to have a white 3d screen that works for passive glasses.

But the new 3d TV's are pretty sweet, and with all the 3d channels coming I don't think it's going away. Also the skill level and equipment is getting better everyday so the 3d does seems to be getting better. Or you can always use a 3d rig to shoot motion HDR like I've been doing lately...... check it out here http://vimeo.com/11774969

I can't speak for the consumer public but I saw Avatar first in 2D and then later at IMAX in 3D and preferred the 2D experience personally.

I just don't like "wearing sunglasses at night". :)

If you pay an extra $5 they better not skimp on the lamp power IMHO. We shouldn't even be talking about dark images in these new theaters. I also wonder how many people get a bad pair of glasses and don't say anything, they watch with blurry scratched lens, they have tried to hand me some really bad 3D glasses at the local Imax. "Thank you sir, oh wait one more time.... how about another". OK if I'm getting two bad ones in a row how many are in the bin? This will kill 3D too because if you ruin it for someone by skimping on decent eyeware you lose repeat 3D business if they don't have a good time. Blurry=Not good. Big scratch over one eye=Not good
It would be great to be able to buy a personal pair that wouldn't end up tossed in a trash bin 6 times a day.

It is going to cost $20 for those "in the theater at home" movies. Or you wait 3 months and Redbox it for $1

Choice is good.

Just had a thought, If 3D starts tanking they may stagger the 2D release by 30 days to drive 3D ticket sales first. Could happen. The Studios should really hold off on those 2D conversions as that will kill the market for sure, Save those works for 3D TV as the effect may be fine on a 47 inch screen. We need movies where the 3D adds to the story , even something dumb like MURDER IN THE GRAND CANYON would be great in 3D because your in the Grand Canyon, just walking around would look cool in 3D. People seem to like riding dragons in 3D as the top 2 favorite 3D movies have that going for them. Surprised no studio is greenlighting DRAGON RIDERS OF PERN for a 3D movie, that seems like free money just with the Avatar fans showing up.

I heard the rates are going to be really high though. ~$20-$30.

When I saw Avatar in 3D, it was on IMAX which is brighter because of the two projectors, sharp and overall, jaw dropping, but in reald, it was less than impressive. Unless you are watching 3d films in IMAX, you are wasting your money and in some cases are wasting your money anyways because of the crappy 3d in many of the post Avatar films. I don't want 3D to go away because when done right, it is amazing but the public will tire of the prices and the dark images that the single projector screen offer. Many feel disoriented. The problem is that the money is there with this new gimmick and it is drastically changing the way we make films and not in a good way IMO.

The only good thing that can come from 3D is if wide-spread R&D programs turn up some amazing stuff. Otherwise, this will be a fad - like any previous attempt.

Sure, Avatar was amazing for some. What next? Because if that was their one and only ace in a hole, then people will notice soon enough, and this will turn into a passing fad...

During the over 100 years of cinematic industry there were hundreds of format from 35mm through different sizes of negatives, different sizes of frames, perforations, projectors, 180° and 360° screenings. They were all lasted for the time they filled the theater. If movie is an art form, and it is, like paintings and literature, the very basic simple 2D screening, either in the theater on at home on what we call TV, will be the only one that survive.
My opinion.

Shooting in 3D is WHY Avatar in 3D worked. Not shooting in 3D is why Clash Of The Titans in 3D did not work.

I think it's too early to tell if this round of 3D is a fad or not. I really think it's here to stay for good this time, but I also think that once the novelty wears off a bit, we will see a bit more restraint as to how often it is used and for what purpose. I'm thinking that what will keep 3D going is further evolution of the format. There's a chance here to create a more immersive visual experience than what we are seeing now and the current trend of most 3D being aimed at child audiences is not going to keep the masses coming back year after year. Hollywood is doing its best to make 3D a gimmicky fad and I really don't understand why. I think a big part of the problem is that is what 3D has always been before. The studios are "playing it safe" by making the assumption that it will be again and they're churning out the product to support that position. eg: Pirates 4. Way cool it's being shot on RED. But let's be honest here... It has a tiny budget compared to any film in the preceding trilogy, it seems they have lost most of the original cast, but hey it's going to be in 3D because that should attract more people to see it I guess....
