  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

List the 5 most important things you want from scarlet

MGB Endoscopy

MGB Endoscopy

I looked up the sumix cam. (It is windows only.) AltaSens makes the CMOS. Together with MGB, they are making a 720p endoscopic cam. So when you go for a colonoscopy, they can shove it up your rectum and see those polyps in HD.

Also they have the 12a2c, which is what I was referring to:

Its very limited, and it doesn't seem like anyone has one in their hands yet.

with a M42 mount,

I think for a SLR mount, a dumb Canon EOS is the best option?
At least EOS to Nikon, M42, Leica, Hasselblad, Contax, Pentax and so on..... are all done easily with a simple adaptor.
M42 would pretty much limit you to M42 lenses.

A Birger EOS mount now.... that would really be nice :w00t:

Here we go, the definitive list:
1. Under $6000
2. 2K resolution
3. Variable frame rates: 1fps - 100fps
4. 4:4:4
5. 1/2" CCDs.

thingy

thingy

The term 4:4:4 doesn't apply to any Red. I think it has to do with the raw bayer thingy and only one chroma per pixel, or something. It is like asking for a 6 speed stick shift for your jet engine car. Ask Jim, because I don't know all this technical jargon. I just know RED is cool and so are jet engined cars, once they get up to speed. (I hear both are slow to start.)

add #7 to my list
7) quick startup

so now im wondering, how "cool" is 2k now since sony and red are pushing for a 4k standard

4:4:4 means no color space subsampling. Lower (4:2:2, 4:2:0, etc) is color subsampling a way to reduce bandwith (less processing and storage needs). So RED is 4:4:4

I find it incredibly entertaining that people want a professional cinema camera for $2000. Great if it can be done, but my thinking is "yeah right". Maybe if they sell just the sensor and the mount and charge another couple thousand for the processing and storage (or send it like a SI-2K mini to a computer to process and store).

Remember Jim has stated they will be showing Sony a few things at NAB. Sony has the EX-1 which is a 1080p solid state camera with under and over cracking 1/2 cmos sensor and comes in at under $7000.

If RED again blows away everyone else with quality and price thinking Scarlet will come in at $2000 is not crazy. However I am thinking more around 3500-4000.

Heres what would make me take out a loan for Scarlet:

S16 2k sensor
1 frame increment variable frame rate from 1fps to 60+fps
4:4:4 color space
24fps (not 23.976)
all-in-one, meaning the camera ships with everything needed to roll.... flash?

oh, yeah. FPS changed by a little knob type thing on the outside of the camera so live over/undercranking could be done.

1. 35mm sensor and lens mount, just as Red
2. Way lower cost, due to decreased resolution at 1920x1080 at max
3. HDD recording

....Well, that's the three major I'm asking from a camera today.
HDD recording in 1080p using 35mm Nikon mount lenses.

My Thoughts:
  1. Affordable to hobbyists ("prosumers"), under $2000 MSRP.
  2. 1080P native record resolution
  3. Solid-state recording, to CF cards. Perhaps two CF cards (swappable like P2 cards), and a RAM buffer.
  4. OLED displays
  5. Relatively small size (compete with Canon's HV20)
  6. Simple operation, with no silly features (things such as digital zoom, captions, and fades should be handled in post).
  7. Manual controls where practical, especially zoom, focus, and iris.
  8. Rugged.
  9. Standard files formats, uncompressed recording (no special software required). Perhaps BMP frames (named by time code) and WAV audio.
  10. Reasonably decent audio. Comparable to M-Audio MicroTrack or Samson Zoom H4.

Laster, I'd like to see a larger prosumer camera, to replace Sony's DSR-PD170.

I do mainly experimental artistic videos and some commercial work. The current Red is out of my price range. The Scarlet could be ideal. So for me what would be great are price range around $5k or lower. More than that and I can't justify the cost. Since much of my works revolves around experimentation rental isn't ever really an option, so I need lower cost.

2K or above. While my final output is generally DVD, I like to do in-frame cropping and as most of my work is done in post, the more pixels the better.

Variable frame rates for good slow-motion, either in-camera or simply capturing a lot of frames for me to slow in post.

Time-lapse or a simply a port to support something like the Nikon MC-36 remote. I currently do a lot of this work using a dSLR and ultra slow tripod heads and dollys. Now I just need some slow actors...

Nikon mounts would be sooo cool, but probably not really expected in a small camera. But would be cool.

How about an affordable and portable waterproof housing. I do a lot of backcountry shooting where I'm on the water and away from electricity for weeks at a time. I actually shoot using still cameras in motion mode for this. The 30fps makes some really compelling images. There aren't a lot of affordable housings out there for still cameras much less video.

OK, that's six. Sorry.

Oh, remember, price point for those of us who don't shoot using a clients budget.

built-in eyepiece, not an accessory like RED ONE. also, give lower end users several SLR lens mounts to choose from. who can afford pl lenses?

It's alot of fun reading what you guys would like to see. Hmmm here's what I think. Everyone wants the camera to cost more or less $8,000 right. One has to remember that the Red may cost $17.5K but to actually use it you've gotta buy viewfinders and memory stuff and lenses and all that other stuff you're looking at like $30K for the basic setup. Basically what I wanna see is a camera that costs around $15K once you've slapped on all the extra kit. Maybe 2K tops, 4K is stupid because then it would be competing with the RED ONE and Jim has specified that it's not supposed to do that. so 2K or more probably 1080p.

Alot of people are talking about how the specs of 2K and S16 and all that won't fit into a pocket camera, but may I remind you that back in '05 if someone said 4K for $17.5K you would have sent them to a shrink, so basically this forum is pretty pointless because the RED team has broken all the rules before and they'll probably do it again!

1. 70mm Sensor
2. 12K
3. fixed organic lens that talks to you
4. 3D sensor thingy like in the sci-fi movies
5. $5.99 price tag because it was made in China

lol XD

a very inspiring first post indeed, but i think that scarlet will be priced lower than the SI-2K and hopefully around $3000-$7000. There are 2k cameras slowly coming out and scarlet will be different than others. The market for this is huge in that price range, people want higher res, dynamic range and cine style shooting at an affordable price. Others will be using scarlet for filmouts.

All is needed from scarlet are basic camera features, we dont want a whole bunch of features that are rarely used. This will help keep costs down.

intercut with red 4k

intercut with red 4k

i know this doesn't apply to most potential scarlet users, but i have a redone so i am primarily interested in scarlet so long as i can intercut between my redone and scarlet seemlessly. now i've seen red footage 2k and 4k intercut and i'm fine with that. i'd like to shoot redone as the "a" cam with scarlet as the "b" and action/stunt/cheap steadicam cam. sometimes these things wouldn't be cut back to back but sometimes they might. it would be great to do this all with red always at 4k but i'm not insane so i could go down to 3k or even 2k so as to better match scarlet's best stuff.

does anyone believe that the right compromise of price (let's say $5k without a lens or $8k with lens included) optics, compression and sensor attributes (dynamic range, pixel size/sensitivity) can be reached to allow smooth intercutting of scarlet and red?

:sorcerer:

- 2K (or more) resolution, 4K (or less) price.
- S35 & Canon SLR lens compatible, including autofocus that can be auto, manually tweaked or programmed (knob/button that goes through several pre-set focuses)
- Solid state / harddrive
- VERY SMALL
- No LCD, battery, handle, or anything - Let the user mount whatever they like on this camera...or the camera on whatever they like.

please

I'm 17 and buying my first pro camera this summer. I have an HV20 and I was gonna buy a 35mm lens adapter (Letus35). I have £10,000 to spend. Probably £4-5,000 on a MAC PRO and then the other $10,000 on the Scarlet. So as long as it's better than say, the EX-1 or the XL-H1 and I can get it with all the kit needed for more or less $10,000 I'll be overjoyed.

I'm hoping to shoot some low budget cine style stuff as well as some documentaries so I'd say it has to be mobile, but quality would also have to be good. It'll be irritating if it's no where near as good as the RED ONE because then I'll always be thinking. Hmmm should I have waited a couple of years and then gotten the RED ONE. On the other hand, if I do some good stuff with the Scarlet then maybe I'll get some sponsorship to upgrade my kit.

At this point I'll tell myself before someone else tells me..."it's not the camera, it's the hand behind it..."

Anyway, once I get some stuff done then maybe one day some of you lucky ass RED ONE owners can team up with me and we'll remake "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" or something.

Just gimme a camera good enough to shoot the film look on with some good frame rates and DOF lenses and I'll certainly shell out for it...ONE DAY I SHALL HAVE A RED!! but for now the Scarlet will assauge me...speaking of assuation, has anyone seen Sweeney Todd. If you haven't...GO WATCH IT BECAUSE ITS FANTASTIC. THE DIRECTOR AND THE ACTORS ROCK!!!

wow, very little of this post had anything to do with the Scarlet. Oh well, it's only my second post, and I'm an immature teenager. But you guys are pretty cool and friendly :)

so i'm sure you'll forgive me. hey, maybe they should make like a camera called MAROON or something for budding film makers! that would be cool...

excllent answer to those people who still in doubt

Come on, don't be absurdly floppy now, about image quality.

IT SHOULD INTERCUT WITH RED ONE. BUT WITHOUT ALL THOSE CRAZY OPTIONS.

4K (compressed) TO FLASH CARD. 24-25. That is cinema, or at least the future of cinema.
I don't need anything more, but I certainly don't want to go back, I don't want anything less. Everyone has been dreaming, asking and waiting for the highest resolution and 24 fps... for years. that's the easiest part, because it's so low.

Image quality camera: that's the first thing we need, and quite possibly the only.
flash card would probably be the only reasonable possibility anyway, since they are so compact, and the camera has to be small. Not ultra small, just small, which is simply the opposite of big. I don't want a fragile hard disk in my pocket to look after all the time.

4K is the heart of Red Digital Cinema, from the source to the screen. The dream was and is still this one, not another boring one.

why ask for less? why ask for 2k/1080i/p when that is exaclty what we feel was not enough in existing cameras for digital cinema? At least untill Jannard revolutionized this. Let's not go back from here, please. Let's go deeper, instead.
This camera could be really unique. It doesn't have to have all the infinite options that only a super modular camera like Red One has.
Nothing would make sense for Red one's little sister as much as being able to offer comparable image quality to Red One: that is 4K.

Please, 4k Mysterium TO FLASH CARD (or at least 3K, but on the same sensor or a very similar one. Perhaps, upgradeble to 4k in the future, in order to set it free from osolescence when it would get older.)
Why design/build/buy another sensor? an inferior one, is not nice.
Just take the uncompressed raw option out.
Compression is beautiful! but the image has to be big!
otherwise, I already have a Canon XH-A1 which is amazing, in the 1920x1080 segment. (and it has 3ccd, so that resolution is optimized and real). It can't enter the pocket of my shirt, but after all, what do I want? A toy?
Not even SRL photo cameras can stay in one's pocket. What's the problem with that.

2k bayer = less than 2k optimized. So, at 2k, Scarlet would have less resolution than a good HDV.
Do you want that? For what price?
Are we talking about a prosumer pocket camera or a professional pocket camera?
I would like a professional pocket camera. With big 4k sensor, so I can use it as a second camera with my Red One without having the video quality suddenly drop.
And I don't want all those accessories and possibilities, or hundreds of frames per second. That's silly. I'd rather have great images.
Sharp also make nice little pocket videocameras for the people who don't need 4k.

>3)FIXED LENS- this is to keep size down possibly.

Yes, while subjective, that makes sense. We can have great 4k images on a good fixed glass. If Red decide to put a fixed lens, it will be fine for me.

someone said
>2. 2k minimum
>3. RAW acquisition
>4. Variable frame rates up to highest possible.
>5. 10-bit HDMI out
On a pocket camera?? you are joking. Aren't flash cards in your pocket not a good enough solution? do you prefer to stare at boring slow motions and have raw and lower resolution images than compressed, easy to handle higher resolution images at the most classic and immortal 24 fps?
I'm not going out with a video deck or computer hunging from my neck just to record video from a pocket camera.
The video has to be compressed anyway for an ergonomic reason, therefore there is no need for a deck even for when I come back home. because everything is recorded onto flash cards anyway. Just push them into the card reader of you computer.

>3)HIGH SPEED - crash cam applications if its small.

Crash a Red camera??? Use HDV for that purpose, if it has to be only 2k/1080 something.
While if it will be 4K, as I hope it to be, I would never treat it badly.

for cinema imagery in one's pocket... please, make it pure and supreme: 4k solid state at 24-25fps.
I don't ask anything more than this.
Something like a Leica for moving images.
