  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

List the 5 most important things you want from scarlet

while people here will go on saying how unnecessary/unfriendly/slow 4k is... outside, the crappiest cinema might have just standardized to 8k.
 
1. big sensor at least 16mm type
2. HDMI or HD SDI output
3. be able to use red one accesories
4. custom type of lense, i think RED will delivery a new type of micro lense for scarlet
5. low price
 
1. below 5000usd
2. at least 16mm sensor
3. small!!
4. varying frame-rates
5. slow-mo (it would be cool to have)
 
It is difficult to have the two words "pocket-sized" and "professional" in the same sentence. In my opinion, to be professional, apart from the usual list of requirements - manual controls, image control, 1080p - 2K resolution, variable frame rates,- a professional camera needs some weight and size to get good shots without being twitchy. Something in the range of the HVX200.

I mean, the little manual focus zip wheel on the Canon HV20 is a joke. With focus being so critical in anything that is HD (much less 2K), it would have to be an HVX form factor just to make it useable in manual.

Given what has been done with the Red so far, I would expect the Scarlet to surprise us in ways we haven't touched on yet.

Personally, I would put down a deposit today to secure my place in line for the Scarlet sight unseen if I knew it would be mid-sized HVX killer.
 
4K is actually worse for me than 2K. Remember, 4K is twice 2K vertically and horizontally. So it is 4 times the number of pixels.

So, 4K takes 4 times as much storage space, 4 times as much time to render effects.

And given the same size sensor, it should have two f-stops less latitude.

All this for four times the number of pixels. That sounds good, except that at 2K you've reached the threshold of the human eye. 4K does not look 4 times as sharp.
 
a camera image quality starts with its sensor.
try saying it's not true.

what is considered professional today may not be professional tomorrow.
someone said older cinealta models will be used to shoot kids at birthday parties, somewhere in the future.
why going back? why even stand bound with the expectations of a couple of years ago? let's push for what was once "impossible".

"too much" is something I have not seen yet in video.

but since I don't want to receive any replay against my more than legitimate wish list by anyone saying he doesn't need 4k, I may buy a Scarlet 3k, but of course it must be cheaper.
And if it's price will be, comparable to as HDV canon H1 (1080p with excellent compression), then I want it to be 3k. otherwise, the H1 offers higher resolution. I think a second hand H1 is more worhwhile.

1) 3k. (higher resolution than HDV)
2) 3k.
3) 3k.
4) 3k.
5) efficient focusing system. Please invent something.


it does't have to have higher dynamic range than mysterium. it would be silly, not because it wouldn't be appreciated, of course, but because 4k with that dynamic range is the best for the best (=Red One), and who am I to discuss this choice.
I am using the Red One and I am very happy with it's sensor, at last.
(and I had never been happy with video camera sensors)

And please don't even start again with "resolution is not the only...", resolution DO matter hugely and is the only thing that cannot be overcome with a trick as, say, DOF adapters.
Funny that to someone resolution seems not important just now that Red transformed it from being a problem that everyone has been fighting with for a centuury, to a conquest.
but this does'nt allow the question to be set back to the world before Red.

unless you are going to sell it and buy a different camera in 2-3 years time, then the capacity of hard disks and the speed of computers will be 4 times what they are now, by that time.
In the mean while, just do it offline, and it takes what it takes. And your footage is future proof.
Remeber, the future of digital projection in theatres is going to be 4k, and it's not far away. Digital cinemas are 4k already, and there will be more and more of them.
1080p is HDTV, and it's pretty normal.

well, I depends how far you watch it from.
in the closest sits at cinema, you can see a lot.
and don't forget than you can reframe easily, there is pleanty of reason to start with more resolution.
You don't really need it soon? no problem, just discard it.

Why should we, they, it, stop posting? You could always stop reading the posts. There's a lot of chewing the fat going on for sure, but if we have to weather that for access to threads like COLOR REPRODUCTION AND SCARLET, then it's more than worth it.

OK, back to business:

1: Scarlet has a direct link to the Hubble space telescope.

2: A directory of great filmmaker's telephone numbers: Hey, Ethan? Joel, you'll do; I'm having a wee bit trouble here. You got a minute?

3: A weekly (radio received) update on what the latest trend in gun-play is. Like, do we hold it sideways? or is that so bad it's gone past good and gone back to bad again?

4: Uhm... It's free.

5: 4K Raw. (ok- that's just silly)

woah, that's exactly what I thought...
 
Id quite like it to be power-able by a 4pin XLR arri style plug so I can power it from the steadicam.

Id like standard plugs, not RED specific inptus and outputs, normal XLRs and BNCs would be good.

Interchangable lens mounts would be cool, I got quite a few nice FD lenses laying around.

Id like more to be included with the body, the RedOne is the body alone, everything else is seperate. It would be nice if you could buy a complete kit with chargers and drives, everything you need to use it.

Mm One more...

15mm rods not 19 would be useful. All my rod mount stuff is 15mm :-(
