  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

List the 5 most important things you want from scarlet

High sensitivity, no noise (unlike hvx)

VFR, over and undercranking (good luck i know)
Nice DOF
Customizable looks (not a big deal but nice)
up to 2k raw
high res LCD

Bare Minimum, to reduce costs

Bare Minimum, to reduce costs

1. s16 mm / s35 mm sensor
2. Under $7,000 K
3. RAW Uncompressed 2K
4. Interchangeable lenses, modular (no lens, EVF, onboard mic; to reduce costs)
5. Variable FPS

1* Interchangeable lenses! ....(NIKON)
2*1080p 60
3*super 35mm sensor
4*under 6000$
5*lcd hd

CF recording
over shoulder shooting
latitude
simulate film looks

Here is my wishlist:

1. s35 censor (great with interchangeable len mount)
2. from SD to 1080p HD with 120fps is just too good for me, I ask for 60fps
3. the size of a Canon 5D body is considered "pocket" enough for me
4. Dual CF or detachable HDD recording device (HDD in pocket)
5. Things make the term of "prosumer" the history in the industry

S16 or near by 2k
Variable frame speeds
with flash memory
option for external lcd display
10 bit
perfect looking
but under $ 6000
And plz jimm dont make it too small which shake in hand suitable with weight.

I don't care if it's sexy !
but would like it to be pocket size, 2K, 60fps, CF, 35mm, Interchangeable mounts, same redcode as red one, and ohh $6000 price tag

if I may chip in

if I may chip in

I have a photography skill and equipment baggage so:
  1. can use canon EF lenses including focus
  2. at least 1080p, 2k would be great
  3. 8ev+ dynamic range
  4. 14bit
  5. modular like Red One
  6. as far as technically possible uses Red accessories for upgradeability
  7. compact flash / hd / ssd
  8. firewire800/Gigabit/eSata/HDMI
as you can see I left sound and I'm sure other things out: that doesn't mean it's not important for me, just that I'm sure there are better opinions then mine on this. :whistling:

I think the reality of it is that there will be a FIXED lens. This is supposed to be a POCKET sized camera!

1. POCKET SIZED
2. POCKET SIZED
3. CF
4. I'LL TAKE ANY RES 720 UP
5. POCKET SIZED

1) s35mm sensor size
2) under 5000$
3) P+S Technik Interchangeable Mount System for Nikon/canon/pl/zeis...
4) Look like the 1st draw of red one, aluminium and hd lcd
...i know ...it's a big poket

5)1080p 60fps

If Scarlet is to rival the Sony EX1 or the HVX, RED should IMO think much more deeply about how EFP&ENG people actually use their equipment:

1) Scarlet should be everything RED is not:

2) It should be lightweight, small (like an EX1), and UNOBTRUSIVE. I put that in bold because it sounds really counterintuitive (and the RED team obviously like flashy design) but when I travel abroad to do EFP work (which is all the time), I NEVER have permission to film.. (have you ever tried to get permission to film in Russia, Iran, India, shit..the USA?). So when I get to customs I need to be able to say: "I'm here on holiday and of course this camera isn't very expensive". Same goes for once you are in the country: you just can't wander around Tehran with a camera that looks like a serious and expensive piece of professional equipment.. It may shoot 8K, but that matters not a jot if you are on the next flight home.. :innocent:

3) It should be very sensitive to light. In EFP situations this can be much more useful than resolution. Often I don't have a light (None!). 1080P of nice footage is much more useful that 4K of noise..

4) Leading on from 3 perhaps: it should be 35mm allowing us to use 35mm stills lenses. In one stroke RED Scarlet would trounce Sony, Panasonic, Canon and JVC.. But the resolution should only be 1080P. EFP and ENG only need or want 1080P, anything else is a pain in the ass. Perhaps if the resolution was low but the sensor was large then Scarlet's sensitivity to light would also be excellent.

5) It should be ergonomically brilliant. Look at the way that Sony, Panasonic, or Canon design their cameras! The EX1 is brilliant! It's almost perfect for EFP or ENG.. I don't want to have to screw on loads of accessories to make Scarlet work, or put up with difficult workarounds as we have right now (build 13) with the RED 1: impossible boot time (for EFP or ENG), no audio controls or limiters, mini xlrs, the need to use rails to mount equipment, variable fan noise, the list is long.. NONE of these are deal breakers if you have a crew and are shooting a feature, then all that matters really is that the image is fantastic, which RED achieves brilliantly! But I'm starting from the premise that Scarlet is not a rival for the RED 1 and that it will be aimed at a mass market, which can only mean EFP & ENG professionals. IMHO most ENG/EFP people would swap 4K for a camera that is as easy to use as an EX1..

1.Imager: Ideally 16:9 35mm chip for 35mm still lenses @1080/2k but this could impeed the pocket design ethos, so a decent zoom (that works well at wide) lens and smaller chip offering 1080 & 2k would be acceptable. Any built in lens should be servicable (at least have a back focus adjustment) as they often fall out of alignment over time giving softer images. All should offer user selectable shutter speeds - inc slow shutter and various exposure modes (similar to the Canon XL series). And 8-10 f-stop dynamic range though bearing mind that low-light performace is a priority!

2. Recorder: 10sec pre-record essential (esp for eng). I-frame codec or at least a codec that doesn't produce temporal artifacts. In short no "Long-GOP" shit (pardon the language but I really don't see the point of using extemely lossy codecs like HDV/XDCAM for HD aquisition at best they just look like a good SD camera) An option of recording in a format that allows for immediate playback/editing would be nice and a RAW mode if possible.

3. "Immediate on" similar to DSLR's or at least a maximum of 2-3secs boot up time.

4. Audio Limiters mode on mic in's alongside manual mode with an optional AGC mode (for those that want it)

5. Weather proof seals alongside lightweight magnesium-alloy body and a rotating wheel selector for speedy menu/mode select operation.

The above is me imagining Scarlet as a pocket "rugged cam" suitable for ENG but also for shooting 2k material in what could be desribed as difficult/risky conditions.

please dont overlook Audio, many users dont wanna use double system,

Scarlet should have 24bit audio

Greetings!!!.

I am Hemal from Goa, India. Thrilled to know Scarlet is on its way. I cannot afford RED- One for its total cost of around $25K. My wish list for Scarlet is:

1. 1080 (Will be excited to have $2K)
2. Interchangeable lens
3. Mic in. (Inbuild mic necessary)
4. Inbuild LCD.
5. Raw mode if possible and ability to edit in Adobe, Sony Vegas, etc.
6. Price Less then $ 5K

Best of luck to Red team.

Regards,

Hemal

As a domestic owner of a ..... well a consumer HDV camera I'm probably not qualified to give a proper list of 5 things that a professional would want... Then again you pro's probably can justify spending $15K+ on a camera so...

Essentially, take a semi decent SLR camera, and make the sensor capable of capturing video.... If the sensor was 35mm but only 1080P then you'd get your depth of field, with relative low production cost... Add powered USB for interfacing (recording to external device - such as 2.5" drives or Flash memory), and stackable battery pack. One pack gives you 1hr, 2 together give you 2 and so forth.

Hence the following are my 'what a domestic camera owner would like to see' list.

1 . Interchangeable lens (as much as I like my HDV camera I hate the shape of the aperture - everything outside the dof looks like a diamond.. uugh)

2 . Off the shelf interfacing - USB. I plug a 2.5" external USB enclosure into the camera, it detects it, I can record to it. Affordable, and allows for rapid transfer to pc. Built in opto-isolator into interface to avoid damage by static electricity (from personal experience)

3 . User mappable faulty/hot pixel re-mapping / integrated sensor cleaning

4 . Programmable buttons on side. Either set more than one focus/zoom point and switch between them, flip image upside down/mirror, exposure setting/fps up/down..

5 . Maybe an accelerometer so that if a user pans the camera too quickly they are alerted that artifacts from the rolling shutter may be evident? Perhaps user defined panning threshold?

Of course if in the event I win first prize in the lottery please ignore this as I will then of course be able to justify getting a proper RED camera
