  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

List the 5 most important things you want from scarlet

There's only a few people here mentioned price. I certainly expect s c a r l e t to be in the sub $10k realm, but only just. Thats the quality I expect we will be getting for that price. A price I would be willing to pay.

All I want for Christmas (2008)

All I want for Christmas (2008)

I don't want a lot from Scarlet
There's just a few things I need
I don't do cinematography
requiring a film school degree
I just make HDTV
A camera is a tool for
Image quality ...
plus ease of use and flexibility

I don't want a lot from Scarlet
There is just a few thing I need
Red One is too big and complex
for a video guy like me
Don't need 4k resolution,
it won't show on my TV
I don't want a Mac workstation
just tranfers to my PC
working with my NLE
Image through my Nikkor lenses
Full frame DOF
All I'll make with Scarlet is TV
HDTV baby
I just want to use it quickly
Set up shouldn't be too hard
Storage shouldn't be expensive
Hard disk or a CF card
A datarate that's no so tiny
that it causes artifacts
I won't use advanced controls
or menu items that distracts
from capturing a composed image.
I want an autofocus
Munual and controlled zoom
Baby all I want is usability.

All the prosumer cameras
(and I've seen them all)
Don't have the features for
a professional.
So I can afford to get
this camera for 10K
Red team won't you bring me one
I really need - won't you please
Make a Scarlet for me ...

Oh I don't want a lot from Scarlet
This is all I'm asking for
Help me make my HDTV
Me and just a million more
Make it and you'll all be rich
from the cameras that you sell
Make our dreams come true
The revolution is happening thanks to you!

Since Scarlet is going to be a "pocket" camera I think RED are going to have to go with embedded solid state memory. The camera will have to utilize a mini USB connection for transfers. It should have RAW capture capability, at the very least a 1080 black and white viewfinder, two mini XLR inputs, low light sensitivity bellow 1 Lux, all indicators should be relegated to the viewfinder with the exception of two or three LED indicators for REC, ON/OFF status. Playback and menu controls should be in the form of a rocker, like the ones available on the Nikon or Canon DSLR lines.

1- S16, 3/4, or S35
2- 2K or 4K raw, 12 or 14 bits
3- Interchangeable lens, take Birger Canon mount
4- 2 CF slots
5- 4 uncompressed audio channels, 2 XLR mic inputs, pots and limiters
6- Auto focus assist if possible
7- Sensor dust reduction

Completely ignoring how cost effective, viable, feasible, etc. it may or may not be to attempt to accomplish this.... I would wish for one thing...

Global Shutter CMOS. Would be the best of both worlds in my opinion. But, what do I know?

Everything else, I have faith that RED will deliver something real nice.

Later,
Jason

Quick!

Quick!

How about a reasonable time to manufacture/deliver.

We all know that RED can deliver awesome results with the RED One, but it took a LONG time from the speculation to delivery...

The technology (although not specified as yet) could be obsolete in two years if it took that long to deliver! Let's suppose they offered a 1080P Hard Disk / Card type camera...Are Panasonic working on an upgrade to the HVX 200??? If so, they could usurp Scarlet...before it even gets off the block. let's face it, High Def is moving at a faster rate than ever, meaning these cameras have an ever shorter shelf life...

THAT SAID...

I'm definitely interested. A 'Digital Cinema Camera' without all the fuss of these Panasonic / Sony 'mini-broadcast cameras' - especially considering that for drama you'll always want a lens adapter on these little cams.

SO...give us 1080P, PL mount (and optional stills mounts) 35mm chip...and give it to us quick!

My Scarlet Top 5 Wish List:

1. Price. The online communities who participated most in the input for Red One’s early development (and produced the most “true believers”) were the DVX/HVX crowd on dvinfo and dvxuser. Frankly, many of us were priced out of the equation when Red One turned out to be a $30,000+ proposition for a well-built out kit. Don’t get me wrong, I’m tickled that Red One is here. I believe it to be the best value proposition EVER for a motion camera. It’s already moving the whole industry forward. I just can’t justify the price for my day-to-day use.

2. Lens Options. I honestly don’t care if it’s a fixed or interchangeable lens. I have faith that Red will match the quality of glass to the sensor. I just want to have options. If this means staring with the basic lens, then buying telephoto adapters, or buying/renting additional lenses down the road, fine. I’m sure a line of Red branded Scarlet lenses would be very successful. Even if Scarlet is designed as an extreme sports / crash cam, you know somebody’s going to try and shoot an indie feature with it. Don’t make it impossible.

3. Redcode Raw. Sure, 35mm depth of field and 4K resolution is the “sizzle”, but I think that Raw processing is the “steak”, and will turn out to be the real historical innovation for Red. Raw is the future of professional motion imaging, and no one else offers it.

4. Super 16mm sensor. I think Super 16 is a great compromise between the extreme DOF that most cameras offer and the problems with being a single operator, or 1/2”-and-under-trained videograper trying to wrangle 35mm focus. The 2K or 1080/S16 combo would make Scarlet viable for a huge swath of the market. If Scarlet could be the Aaton XTR for the 21st century, it would truly change everything, for almost every market segment.

5. Self-Contained Camcorder. What this means is Scarlet would have the ability to record image and sound, to onboard media, with onboard power, and have some viewfinder/monitoring options. If we extrapolate this to “pocket” it would probably mean a mini audio jack, mini XLRs at most, CF card recording (probably the best option at this time), batteries smaller than V-mount bricks, and possibly viewfinder/monitoring taken off the camera itself. These are tough questions. I don’t know what the best answer is besides the basic concept of modularity. Start with basic functions and build out / adapt as needed. Sounds a lot like a tiny Red One.

Looking back on this list, it seems like I’m asking for the moon. I’m asking for Scarlet to be everything I’d dreamed Red One might be back in late 2005, plus some stuff no one imagined, like Redcode Raw to a CF card. And all this in a so-called “pocket” camera? It’s just ridiculous. Even a subset of this would cannibalize Red One’s potential market, but I just can’t shake the stupidly optimistic notion of a “Red for the rest of us”.

The only reason I hold out hope is that Jim has come in on several occasions and downplayed expectations, when necessary. It’s early yet, but I haven’t seen anything but Jim’s bemused silence at all of our crazy speculations.

Red’s already changed the game. It sounds like they have big plans to continue to do so. So come on, you magnificent bastard. You madman. Slap me up the head with a reality check, or tell me to get my credit card out. April suddenly seems like a long, long way away…

1) S16 at 2k RAW
2) Interchangeable lenses
3) XLR input
4) CF cards
5) Last but not least price between 2500 and 5000 $US

Put a VIGNETTE knob!!! So you can vignette on camera!!!! :sorcerer:

Genlock

Genlock

Please have Genlock.

I desparately need a camera with which I can do 3D. Which of course means two cameras. The entry price for this is so steep - and the coming of 3D is being so strongly heralded - it would be revolutionary as well to democratize in terms of price and tools the ability to create this sort of product with art as the goal.

I wouldn't know what to hope for. $5000 = 2 x $2500 a possiblity?

I would like
1080p
4:4:4
B4 or PL mount
CF cards
variable frame rates to 100fps
et voila!

2K
1-60P variable framerates
I'll forego interchangeable lenses for a decent Red manufactured lens. this will keep the price down and quality up.
Redcode (Obviously)
And keep it small sized but with a film-like form factor. It would be great for documentary and unobtrusive shooting if it's kept small.

And keep the price down. There's a big price jump between the HVX crowd and the fully kitted out Red user. If Red wants to tackle the prosumer market they need to keep this priced between 4-6K. Anything above that starts to outprice the user base. It would be great if Scarlet was priced competitive to the HVX/EX cameras. That would be HUGE.

hey jim, a huge market is yours (as you know) IF

-High Dynamic Range
-2K Res Max
-up to 60 or better yet 120fps
-interchangable lenses even fixed lens is awesome
-CF recording
-24BIT Audio

put this in the $7-$10,000 range, and no one will speak the sony language

and oh ya, a must, 4:4:4, weight probably 6-9lbs nice for over shoulder

alright i promise, one more for now, it would be AWESOME if you can take hi res stills, forget the photographer kind of idea, just switch from motion recording to still function.

1. under $2000
2. 1080p
3. 4:4:4
THAT my friend sounds about right, You don't really need 4k or even 2 if you are gonna buy a professional POCKET camera... (It would be nice but it boost up the price so high its just not good)

4. Interchangeable lenses!
5. make it see in VERY VERY LOW lighting conditions(large azz sensor in other words) and NO gain, unless its a special revolutionary RED-gain that is perfect and does not introduce GRain or fuzz..
