  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

List the 5 most important things you want from scarlet

When I heard 'professional pocket camera' the first thing I thought of was a leica rangefinder... so that's what I'm looking for:

1) s35 sized sensor - 1080p resolution
2) compact, sharp & fast interchangeable primes
3) manual focus, aperture and shutter speed with real physical controls
4) Redcode Raw to CF cards
5) a high-res display

Imagine the kind of stuff you could shoot with the combination of incredible sensitivity (large sensor with relatively low pixel density) and fast, sharp primes - all in a package which attracts no more attention than your average tourist's point-and-shoot. While the Red one is revolutionary for independents shooting hollywood-style films, I think a camera like I'm describing could spawn a new genre of smaller-scale indie filmmaking.

It would fit the same role as the classic leica rangefinders - it's not a replacement for your SLR, medium- or large-format camera, it's the camera you take with you and shoot with anywhere and everywhere. For some though it's unique aesthetic and flexibility would make it a primary choice.

Wake me in the morning with fresh fruits and a smile and ...

I wont need 5:
Mysterium, into a CineForm DDR.

1. Super 35mm sensor at 2k (but would be happy with 1080p)
2. 24p with variable frame rates (1-60fps would be fine with me)
3. Interchangeable lens mount, manual focus
4 LCD screen
5. $5000 or less, but not some cheap plastic Aiptek wanna-be HD camera crap

Agreed! A Leica form factor would be perfect, with possibility to add heavy/bulky battery and disk if you want to use it on your shoulder.

I do not think it is realistic to get more than s16 @2k+ because of power and cooling considerations, though. If it were possible to pack the s35 electronics into a pocket-sized case, that would have been the Red One.

I want Red quality, the camera must be built to a standard and not to a price. Extras for it would in any case be much cheaper, it shoud be usable without any accessories just like the Leica.

By the time it is ready, I hope it will be possible to get a small, full-resolution OLED display to use as external viewfinder.

Please do not post comments in here. This thread was meant to be a top 5 list only. Comments can go in any of the other speculation threads.

Thanks.

Don't be a quasi-mod. The OP doesn't say that we can't discuss, so maybe you shouldn't worry so much.

I come from the wedding videography side and I'm looking at this with much interest and anticipation. My list is:

1) 10 stops of latitude
2) Low-light capability that blows away the competition
3) s16 (or greater) size sensor
4) Dual simultaneous recording to CF and 2.5" hard drive
5) Under/over cranking (up to 90 fps at 1080p)

I'm fine with it having a fixed lens if it helps to keep the cost down to under $4000. If they can do something like this for $2-3K, it will destroy anything currently in the prosumer market - isn't that what RED ONE aimed to do at the high end? If nothing else, I think this will be great for competition as we watch how the established players (Sony, Canon, Panasonic and JVC) will respond.

Given the 4K display thread.... Scarlet has to be 4K. Make it so number 1.

Scarlet has to be 4K

Yes! One sensor to rule them all!!!

Another sensor implies twice the work for optimization, don't throw away all that has been done with the Red One!

Viva il Mysterium!!! :matrix:

1. RAW data @1080p
2. WiFi/Bluetooth
3. Real DOF viewfinder
4. HTC Touch/Palm Pilot interface
5. Option for COMPLETE MANUAL control of every function

1) 1080p
2) Higher compression ratios available. 50:1 maybe.
3) RAW
4) 120fps
5) Interchangable lenses. And a good versatile Cooke lens. 18-200mm perhaps.

Maybe it's just my conditioning at the hands of Sony, Panasonic and the boys, but it seems to me that some people are asking for too much stuff for too low a price.
Do you guys really think they'll come out with 4:4:4 variable frame rate camera for 3 grand? Seems like a stretch to me, but what do I know?
