  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LIST of Lens Sets that cover 6k

I have started a new company, digitaloptik, that is offering lens mounts for the Epic and Scarlet cameras. My first mount, for BNCR mount lenses, is being vetted by Red now. The next mount, for Leica R lenses, will be submitted for approval as soon as the BNCR is finished. You can veiw pictures of these on my website digitaloptik.net. I am currently working on a Contax mount for Epic cameras. I will post a picture of that prototype on my website soon.

Harry and Paul--

You don't have to worry about the new sensor being too big for S35 lenses. If you are happy shooting 5K, you're totally fine.

5K on the new sensor will have a smaller image area than 5K on MX. So your lenses will look closer to how they would look on S35. 6K will have an even larger image circle, it's just there if you need it...

With all of this confusion, it's vitally important to have a "___K S35" and "___K S16" mode enabled on the camera. Sure, you can type in any frame size you want, but cinematographers should have the option of instantly jumping to the field of view they're used to from film. Even if it's a weird 5.1K or 4.9K or whatever it works out to be. Several people chimed in to agree when I mentioned this earlier, if you agree with us please add your voice so Red knows this matters!

Thanks a lot Nick...
I am also wondering I got Angenieux 25 to 250mm zoom lens. Is this lens cover 5K or 4K ?
The mount is in Arri PL mount The focus is Inf to 6', the zoom 25 to 250mm and the iris is T3.9 to 22.
The lens holds focus through the zoom range. There is a focus and zoom gear, 32 pitch.

I am on a pre -production of Ultra low budget film going to use my Scarlet with the lenses I have.

Peace
JD

+1
I have asked for this a number of times... Fwiw at the moment shooting 5k 2:1 and extracting a 16:9 frame (fit height) uses almost exactly a s35 frame.

Also with the new sensor's 5 micron pitch 5k is close to s35..

June,
I think your 25-250 would not cover 5k, as that is close to S35 frame size, and that lens is old school 35 Academy, with a approx. 28mm Dia. image circle ( Super 35 is just over 31mm Dia.).

That 25-250 should cover 5K on Dragon, as that's supposed to be S35mm coverage. As Ryan says, you don't HAVE to use 6K and the greater FOV, it's just an option.

Ryan I totally agree. The Dragon sensor (and even current cameras) could well use proper 16mm, S16, S35, and Full Frame "K" modes so you can always see the RESOLUTION and IMAGE CIRCLE you've selected. Would be very useful. Especially on Dragon, where everything is going to change.

Hello Ken & Nick,
We are going to use Scarlet and we are planing shoot 4K only. Like to know 25-250 will cover 4K?
Thanks
JD

Those of you with the Zeiss Contax still sets --
1. are you mounting them via Canon EOS mount adapters?
2. How bad is the breathing when you pull focus?
3. Have you found anyone that would convert to PL?
4. Was it worth it?

I have a Zeiss contax 1.7/50 and a Standard Speed T2/50... Aside from several thousand dollars, I do wonder how much is truly different between the glass. And whether I could possible mix and match some similar lenses in my case.

The latest AC quotes The Master dp Mihai Malaimare, saying how much he loves the Zeiss Jena (assuming lenses for medium format)
Struck me as a bit odd for lenses that are usually being sold below $500-1000 on eBay.

Curiousity is getting the best of mme.

Hi June,

It depends on which 25-250 you have. If it predates the HR and HP it will cover 5k at focal lengths above somewhere around 32mm at a focal distance of over 10 feet. It does breath quite a bit so at a closer focus you will have to push in a bit. It is a great lens but stay away from 3.9.

Will, Contax Zeiss lenses

Of course Zeiss has gone and revised many of these designs (35 f2, 50 f2, etc)...but the original Contax lineup is still FANTASTIC. They competed head to head with Leica R, and were sold from 1974 to 2004. In 2005, Zeiss "re-issued" them as ZF/ZE's with brand new coatings that gave them a new, more "modern" look.

Hope this helps.

Marketing BS from Zeiss. They are exactly the same in terms of their coatings.
What has changed is the way in which the lenses are baffled (the amount of light which is bouncing around in the barrel). That is a more modern design.
This can add a perception of greater contrast in certain lighting conditions, but in the vast majority of situations, visually they perform exactly the same.
The only exception to this is the 50/1.4, which appears to be much better wide open on the Contax version than the Z series. Still don't know why.
The ZE/ZF 50mm Macro is however, a great lens.

Just for info the new Canon Cine primes are sharper wide open than the Zeiss lenses. Too bad they have an incomplete set: 24/50/85. The iris ring doesn't have enough spacing between the apertures though.

I have been using simple EOS adapters, however I am about to purchase Leitax mounts (the same thing Duclos uses). There won't be any play with the Leitax.
I will do this for my 5D work, but for my Sony F3 I have a mount that is made for Contax lenses.

No need to go PL for me and this way I can use the 5D for B-roll very easily.
Not too much breathing, but they aren't Cine lenses, that's for sure. Most have a great focus throw, but there are a couple with only about 60 degrees of rotation.

Sorry but you are incorrect. It is not marketing BS from Zeiss. The lens coatings have changed over the years. Do you honestly believe that improvements have not been made in the development of lens coatings in the last 40 years?

I can def tell the difference between my early Contax AE's (1975 to 1984) and later Contax MM's (1984 to 2005).

The older AEs with serials in the 5's and low 6's certainly flare more than the later MM's (high 7's, 8's).

I think I asked Duclos this -- but I think there aren't many people doing Contax > PL conversions... except Nan from GL Cinemod.

I was quoted this:
1) You can choose the 20mm and 50mm Lenses from my set of super speed prime Lenses.
I've designed this set of lenses and will offer you the 20mm and 50mm. The price is $3000 for 2 Lenses together+cost delivery by DHL $60.
2) I can rehouse Zeiss 20mm/F2.8+35mm/F2.4 and 50mm/F1.8 M42 mount to PL mount.
The cost of rehousing is $1200 per lens.
You can buy these lenses and send them to me, or you can buy them from me directly. I have these Lenses in my stock.
The price for 20mm/F2.8 is $600, 35mm is $385 and 50mm is $200.

If I can get my hands on a early Dragon sensor I'll get together with some fellow RU and tests all the sets we believe will cover 6k. We'll probably set it up at a camera house after hours and welcome anyone interested in bring in and testing their set with the new sensor. Should build a very good list for us to make some purchasing decisions with.

But Will there is usually not a definite cover or do not cover... all lenses goes from good to less good towards the edge of the projection circle. So even though you do not get black corners on your frame many will still find a lens unacceptable blurry or have to much cromatic errors towards the corners even if the lens covers the whole sensor with image.

The best test would be to take a camera with even bigger sensor and resolution than the dragon and then test all interesting lenses. My sugestion would be a PL modifed 5D with removed mirror. Images from such camera will clearly show both lens resolutions and also images circles that are smaller than 5D sensors and you could easily calculate the dragon sensor size from a 5D capture.

These lenses he's talking about AREN'T Contax. Those are Zeiss Jena DDR lenses, fyi.
