That is awesome.

Met Michael at 2011 NAB (FCPX unveiling) and thought what a genuine nice kid who actually loves this stuff :)

He was so helpful with the patrons and would answer all questions no matter how crowded his booth got.

Congrats from me ;)

Wow! Great news I hope. Best of luck to all involved.

Didn't see that one coming, but what a great group of folks at LI. They've helped define post-production in the digital age.

Panavision had money for M&A?!

Congrats to Light Iron; well deserved.

Great and well deserved Michael. Always takes the time to contribute to this community.

I thought LI was doing incredibly well. How does this benefit LI?

Absolute legitimacy. Being under the most trusted name in the industry (save ARRi) means your products are there to work.

Plus panavision is aggressively pushing their digital component. They need a new "lab" to go with it to make sure their clientele is getting the best from the cameras.

How happy this makes DIT's I don't know. Most of them make a significant portion of their income on cart rental. Light iron carts packaged with a camera can be troublesome to their bottom line for panavision jobs.

This is tremendous news for feature, episodic, and commercial production with a lot of potential on the horizon.

I think it's savvy move by Panavision and can really push "the total package" further on PV productions. Couldn't be happier for both companies. This is pretty exciting news when you start thinking about what's possible. Well done.

They couldn't compete, so they may as well acquire. Is Panavision still making/modding cameras? They should let Cioni put his fingerprint on that dept...

Panavision still "Panavisizes" the cameras they provide as well as many other handy things. As for making cameras..... well...... that's an ongoing and weird story.

However, they support and provide equipment for motion picture productions on a global scale with locations found all over.

They also happen to make some of the prettiest motion picture glass around when it comes down to cinema applications.

The vast majority of features I've worked on have been Panavision jobs.

also benefits LI because it will let LI move its vision for post-production on set a step closer to a ubiquitous reality...and put them at the helm of that development. pretty awesome move, really.

congrats to the LI team and a special wave to my CO pal, Katie, who is also one of their principals....

I think they will create a whole new paradigm for filmmaking out of this move, one which will likely trickle down to the way that all of us work.

Outpost. Panavision has the resources to develop custom solutions. The wild west of DIT work where someone buys a Macbook and throws a bunch of firewire junk and random applications and shell scripts is on its death bed. Data is too important and worth way too much to go with hackneyed fly by the seat of your pants solutions.

Also vendor lock-in. By being on-set Light Iron wins work in post. By Panavision pushing a refined custom and robust on-set solution they also encourage ease of transition to Panavision/LightIron's post workflow.
