  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Letus Gimbal

I am interested in a Group Buy. I looked at this closely at NAB and was quite impressed, but frankly I didn't think it could be completed anywhere near as quickly as Letus was saying. Glad they are proving me wrong…they are apparently moving full-speed ahead on the Helix and it looks great.

Interested in group buy

Dear RED users. Wow, thanks so much for your tremendous support. I haven't written in this forum in ages. Here is a little update:

1. Helix can now flip up to the sky and even can do a 360 without getting freaked out. It was just a setting issue that was quickly fixed.
2. I heard you all, there's a cold shoe mount for the monitor on the back of the unit. I added few 1/4-20 for you all, both on camera side and on the back.
3. We have connection points for wireless video transmitter right underneath the camera plate.
4. Front rods for FF and MB.
5. We significantly reduced the weight with increased strength. (Thanks to my Structural Analysis professor at Portland State University :-)
6. The base can now lock by thumbscrews for even faster balancing on the 2nd axis (Elizabeth nagged me about it during NAB and I finally gave in :-)
7. The back of the slipring is now completely covered.
8. For RED users, I can put 2 2-pin Lemo's instead of 1 2-pin and an SDI because you can use a wireless video transmitter.

What I just told you is nothing compared to what I will tell you Monday after the patent is filed. It will blow your mind away.

You all can check back on Monday on LetusHelix.com for complete specs.

Great to have you personally involved in this thread, Hien. Thanks for taking the time to do that.

Love how responsive you guys are to feedback, and it's obvious from the renderings that more refinement has been done on the design since NAB, including removal of enough stock from the plates to make the rig even lighter. Thanks also for the thumbscrews.:-)

Maybe this question will be answered after your big announcement on Monday (very excited for that!), but several of us really want to use this thing on a crane/jib. Others desire very much some way to mount a single, centered handle above the rig for low angle shots. So whatever you have in mind for an interface or mounting solution for these uses is of great interest.

Can't wait for Monday!

All of these will be addressed on Monday.... And much much more. It's so simple.

Heinle,

This may be OT for this thread, but there is discussion on the Redlink Developer's Kit thread about the usefulness of the Red's gyro data for stabilization. Apparently the data is sampled 3.3 times a second. Is that data of use to a gimbal manufacturer such as Letus? Is the sample rate sufficient? Might it enable the development of lower cost gimbals for use with Red cameras?

Perhaps you could comment over there?

Thank you

Scott - I like the way you are connecting the dots. This could REALLY get interesting!

This thread is certainly getting more interesting. Love that Hien himself is stepping in to give updates. That's encouraging. Looking forward to tomorrow!

The reason I chose this wonderful forum to announce the new product is that you guys are a very prestigious and innovative protective group. These are one of the very few groups that rather spend extra for original ideas then cheap knocked offs. I hope that I will not disappoint you all tomorrow. Tomorrow announcement will benefit everyone from Hollywood to starters. That's why we took our time to have our lawyers making sure our findings and invention would be protected from the mass market that are so ready to knock off any good ideas, discouraging any good idea to come to market. Again, I thank you all for the tremendous support in the past and hopefully in the future. You guys are the best. God bless.

Will wait for your offical anouncment

Scott,
The complicated part of a stabilizing system is the controller, not the gyro. A gyro goes for less than $50, which provides position data to be calculated by the processor inside the controller, which in turn distributes power to the motors until the system is stabilized. Well, it's more complicated than that, but that's the 40,000 ft level. So it's a lot cheaper to get a gyro that already worked with the controller than getting the handshake between the Red camera and the controller established. If Red integrates a controller inside the camera, it'll be different story. Hope I made it clear.

Wow...Anamorphic adaptor for GoPro for $199 http://letusdirect.com/cart/anamorphx-gp.html

Seems like this is a new sort of Letus version 2.0 company. A new kind of energy...imagination
and passion coming out through these new products. Is it true that there will be a Helix for Alexa coming later..?

Hienle..great to have your input here. But most operators of stabilizers are useing a wired monitor...because wireless systems have
from 1 to at most 4 receiver monitors. And focus..and remote operator..and director use those up usually. So would be great
to keep SDI and if possible HDMI also to the operator's monitor...since alot of cameras have it these days.

Yup, that's pretty clear. Thanks. :-)

Steve,
It will come standard with SDI I/O.

An operating environment where a gimbal is needed is just the kind of place that locking connectors like SDI were created for. HDMI seems like a terribly risky choice for this kind of application. I wouldn't recommend it.

I agree 100% but the sad truth is HDMI is everywhere (whether we like it or not) so a vast majority of people looking at buying this rig would benefit immensely by having an HDMI port in addition to the SDI. Beats having to buy a cheap sdi to hdmi convertor box that needs power, etc.
