I think this is great. I feel like people with the skills and the equipment to make quality video should give back and use their powers for good, to tell the important and often neglected stories about our world.

That said, how did you complete this in 24 hours? How long have you known this man? Did you feel uncomfortable shooting at the food bank? I'd love to hear more about your experience making this piece.

Well done.

MR

Thanks buddy!

I had never heard Stevie's story until the day I interviewed him. These are some of my favorite projects I get to do. Like you said, educating the world about neglected stories that need to be heard. It's crazy, but sometimes we get so caught up in our own world, it creates a mask for the world of pain and hurt around us.

I did everything by myself on the day since I can't get my assistants to work for free. The day started at 6:30 am and ended late that evening for final program export. The interview lasted about 40 minutes. Stevie was having difficulty answering my questions, as he was constantly saying the same thing over and over again, so I tried to rephrase questions to try and get the answer I wanted, not putting words in his mouth because I wanted the viewers to feel like Stevie left his heart on the table. Hopefully that came across. :-)

I only had about 3 hours with Stevie, so it was a very ambitious schedule. Every part of the car b-roll, even the shots of him outside of the car, was completely handheld with the Epic, Zacuto EVF and the Canon 24-105 lens. Rocked redvolts too. It made this schedule more attainable that way, even though I love using all of my other tools as much as possible.

Once I hit the editing room, I logged his answers, selected the best ones, then picked the music score once I had a feel of the piece. I always like picking the music prior to editing as I feel it gives me a better outcome, and I'm able to cut faster. Sometimes when the music is scored post edit, a shot may be held to long, whereas, with the music, you can hold it a little longer because it fits. I edited in Premier Pro at 1/2 resolution 5K WS with the Rocket. Didn't apply any effects within the sequence since I knew it was going to CC.

I did a quick hour color correction for the piece in Davinci. I already knew the look I wanted, so that made things easy. I exported the various deliverables, and sent it off to the lead pastor who was able to immediately approve and implement it into this weeks upcoming services.

Nice work Chris. Sound in camera?

Nope. Just had a scratch track from a zoom H1 on camera. Then used a Zoom H1 along with a RODE Lavalier mic as my wireless setup and used a RODE NTG3 with blimp for backup just in case the Zoom/Rode lavalier mic cut out since I can't monitor it. I hate using actual wireless devices. A lav always sounds better in my opinion. Synced with pluraleyes.

This is great man, awesome look for an awesome cause. 24 hour turn around is quite impressive. Seeing so much good stuff coming from canon l series glass, and I was planning on zeiss ZF for my recently purchased scarlet, so torn...

Thanks Carlos! Appreciate the compliments.

I had a 5 lens set of Zeiss CP2's. Decided to sell them after doing some real-world tests with the Canon Glass. Now, that's all I rock and absolutely love the way they resolve images.

If you ever need help producing a project like this - message me. This is one of the best uses of expensive cinema equipment I have seen in awhile. I live in San Diego and would love to do same here if your travels brings you South.

Wow Josh...you're too kind. Thanks so much.

Wilshire Avenue Food Bank's annual golf tournament is on Monday. If any avid golfer wants to golf for a good cause ($150 for 18 holes, includes lunch) and lives in Orange/LA/Inland Empire counties, or any production company who wants to sponsor a hole, I can get you the detailed info.

Nice work. Watching stuff like this is always humbling. Felt a great deal of compassion watching your piece.
