  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

lenses for red raven

What rubs me the wrong way about your post is that you already know this. You know why people refer to FF and that it is the universal standard. What's up with the condescending nature of your introduction in your post?
I thought his was an excellent post! He just points out that all mention of crop factors is very misleading. A lot of people are concerned about this 'crop factor' stuff, when as he points out ... it is a totally meaningless discussion. And to your point, the people who want to know crop factor to compare 'chips' and lenses etc. these folks usually also know the discussion is of not much use in the real world or on the set. Just take your body, slap a lens on it and frame your shot, if you don't like the composition .... move, zoom or change lens. On the set, on the day, the crop factor .... which can't be changed .... is useless information. That's what he pointed out in a very nice, intelligent easy to understand manner.

has anyone ever mixed a sigma 18-35mm and canon cn-e primes?
i would love to see how they match or dont match… some people refer to the canon's as having warmth.
anyone know examples posted or first hand knowledge?
thank you!

oh, ive been using this website to find old links, about raven, like this one, on reduser
ravenuser.net

Jacek,

and what do you do when most lenses made just for stills have image shift when focusing?

just sayin'
Not most lenses- some lenses. Usually old, worn out lenses shift. Just like old, worn out cine lenses shift. Some only shift when you use focus ring and don't when you use the internal motors.
Do your homework and cherry pick your lenses. I did that with Cookes, Angenieuxes and Ultra Primes for clients. Even cine lenses, while admittedly a lot more consistent (as they should be at the price level they are at)
show enough variance to warrant cherry picking. And besides- the cine mods you are talking about do NOTHING to cure image shift. I've performed plenty of serious ($20k) cine mods- more than anyone on this forum- trust me (40+ Canon 150-600 lenses alone and many other conversions for that matter)

Image shift does occur on some Canon lenses, but it's not an issue in the vast majority of cases. Generally you really can't notice it unless you're looking for it specifically, as the micro movements of the camera and actors themselves will hide any micro movements due to an image shift. And unless you're literally jumping back and forth very quickly in literally millimeter movements on the lens, it truly won't be an issue, or, at least, it has never been for us. On the other hand, we do test all of our lenses for image shift before we buy them.

Can't speak for Canon's CN-E versions, but the EF-primes have indeed a warmer look than SIGMA Art. Enough to notice when you cut them together, but it's nothing you can't fix in post.

Fully Manual Cinema style - fancy:
Zeiss standard speeds T2.0 - 10mm, 12mm, 16mm - probably really expensive - can be converted to EF?

has this been confirmed or is this speculation? id be thrilled to find out i can mod a zeiss standard speed to work with raven.

im curious to know what else is out there that's a 'classic cinema' lens option for raven ..

i was trying to find out the same thing, o think he is talking standard arri mounted lenses, the little ones, nick morrison said he had a 16mm converted and it was expensive and took forever, and no one makes adapters to ef, so it must not line up or something. it would be great if someone started doing conversions to EF now!

We've succesfully modded an early version of a Standard Prime 16mm T2 and 24mm T2 to EOS, so yes it's possible...we intermix them with our modded Contax EOS glass all the time!

Yes, we converted two predecessors to Standard Primes, early Arri-Mount 16 T2 and 24 T2....to EOS! The glass is very similar to Standard Primes (serial numbers in the 6's)! RP lens did the mod, but it did take them FOREVER, and they'd be reluctant to attempt that again.

But...I've spoken with Visual Products, and I believe they ARE willing to make the conversions (and have some experience with them), so I advise those considering this mod...to try them!
