  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

lenses for red raven

Hey guys - sorry if this was addressed already.

I have a full set of Canon Zooms and Primes for still photography but want to pick up my first Cine Lens. I've read that most users prefer the Zeiss CP2 lens over Canon Cine Glass.

If I had to buy just one Cine lens for my Raven (given the crop factor) which would you buy? 24? 35?

For me, using Scarlet at 4k, which is a similar crop, probably my most used focal length is my contax 25mm for narrative. I can do whole days almost using just that lens, it's damn nice.

Scott,
Check out http://cinemaglass.com/
most people give props to their 18-35mm, they also have an 11-20mm.

I've been personally been looking at the Sigma 20mm f1.4.
Cine glass has huge advantages over still lenses but I am very curious at the capabilities with remote focusing through the built in wifi and foolcontrol via the canon mount. This function can be applied towards your current set as well. I wonder how useable it is on set though. Once the cameras start shipping I'm sure we'll get plenty of sample clips.

As for manual lenses I want to use voigtlanders but after researching m mount glass can be problematic...

Modded Contax Glass would have TERRIFIC mechanics, and great vintage/natural feel. We use them on Dragons all the time. Are affordable enough that are easy to equip multi-cam shoots.

I've been trying to work through this issue as well. I'd like to find the best choice for a lens to put on the Raven while on a Ronin-M. I want it to be EF native so I can pull focus with Foolcontrol.

I figure maybe a Canon 20mm EF-S 2.8 or 24mm EF-S. I'm just not sure if they will vignette at 4K. But I think the 24mm won't be wide enough most of the time, and I'm guessing the 20mm will distort more than I'd like.

Thoughts?

sigma 18-35, pretty sure that it works with fool control. Canon 16-35 2.8 ii if you are looking for that canon look. It's really up to you and what you like.

GDU 24mm is basically made for that, then id consider the 18-35mm sigma, since its parfocal.

Not really parfocal, close though. You won't be zooming on a gimbal anyways. But it doesn't breath at all, so that is really nice, overall great lens and a must have.

well some say it is and some say its not, so i bought mine, (waiting for raven) and did some stills tests and mine seems to stay in focus and act parfocal. unlike canon i zoom in even 5mm and its out, noticeably.
anyway, you should check out GDU's 24mm, and they are coming out with the 40mm soon too, probably the smallest lightest setup you can have.

So I just tried the Canon 16-35mm, with a Heliopan Variable ND and our Weapon MG with a jet pack. I believe this setup is too front heavy. I put a little Sony battery on the top of the weapon to balance it out a bit and the Ronin-M basically overheated its motors. Maybe I needed to balance it better (I was using the arm extensions) but I think the Sigma might be about the same weight.

my take on the GDU is that it just won't be wide enough on Raven. Nate and Sean had a 14mm Canon on the Raven and it was nice, but big and doesn't take 77 or 82mm filters. But I'd love something 10-15% wider than the GDU.

This really reminds me of when we bought the original Blackmagic camera with an EF mount. The sensor was small and the mount was really a poor choice. I wonder if an active M4/3 mount wouldn't be a better choice (or total fantasy land Sony FE - how I'd love to throw a batis on the Raven). Then at least you could speedboost it and get a wider field of view and faster lenses. The EF mount doesn't give that option.

Hey guys, sorry if this has been addressed here, but I'm looking to use the Canon 70-200mm for my surf shots. Is this roughly equivalent to 300mm on the long end? Don't remember the crop factor but I seem to recall it's a little larger than MFT but smaller than APS-C?

Thanks!

I switched to Scarlet-W so I forget the FF, but I do recall 4K DCI at 1.87x and 4KHD at 1.96x.

If anyone has access to a Raven and a Canon 8-15mm I would love to see what type of vignette and distortion you are getting from the 4.5k.

That's why I EOS modded a Standard Prime 16 T2 and 24 T2 - perfect for RAVEN!

Nick, did you mod a PL Zeiss Standard Prime i.e. Cine lens? The old Arriflex/Planar ones I have are all T2.1.
If you did I would love to know how, or who did it?
I have a full set of six 16-135.

I'm wondering why is it not possible to produce SpeedBooster for EF-EF mounts?

I've been asking myself the same thing. Every APS-C Canon User would be able to transform their camera into a FF Camera.
And more importantly, it would make it possible for RED Raven Users to get rid of the Crop "issue" on the Raven.
Sigma's 24-3572 with that Adapter on Raven would be an absolute dream for me. And I'd be willing to pay quite a bit for it.

I believe it's the focal flange distance. The distance is much shorter for mirrorless cameras then dslrs and pl mounts. So the focus points wouldn't be accurate

This subject has been beaten to death so many times, just do a search.
short answer: NOT possible.
slightly longer answer: I think people should stop with those crop factor thing, films were shot(and still shot) on super16 and super35mm for decades and it's all good. the sensor size is a non issue for any professional I believe. If you really want something closer to 70mm, so rent or buy another camera. I feel anything around super35 will be best for 80-90% of productions.

1st: I was replying to somebody else's post and didn't start a new Thread, nor ask anyone to spend their time and resources to explain to me why not and how, etc. So a "search" didn't really have anything to do with my post and your wording was unnecessarily aggressive.
2nd: The "crop factor thing" may be unimportant to you, but for me shooting with a wider lens that can create fairly shallow depth of field and gather a lot of light, such as a 24-35 F2 FF equivalent would, is very important. As it's the kind of look that I want. So TO ME the "crop factor thing" is very important, as there aren't really many lenses that can do that, at least not in the budget I have.

Thanks for the Info. I never really had to think about it as I've been using Nikon FF Cameras. With the Raven I'm jumping from a D750 to a professional grade Cinema Camera, so that was something that crossed my mind now that I'm going to have to buy new lenses for the Raven. :)

Sorry I sounded aggressive, I meant that I've read this question about the speed booster so many times on many threads. In any case, I hope you accept my apology.

On the crop factor thing, as I said, Alexa is super35, Sony F55 is super35, Film (or most things shot on film) are super35 and of course most stuff shot on RED are more or less super35. As you stated, you are coming from a still camera, I never really shot stills and when I do I take it for what it is. usually in films the F stop will be around 2.8-5.6, sometimes you drop to 1.4-2 for some stuff but most of the time it will be on longer lenses.

A 35mm lens @1.4 on raven is not that far off from 35mm on f2, at least not in practical terms I feel.

Have you considered the Tokina 14-20 F2? plus say, Sigma 18-35 or Sigma 35mm 1.4?

Could share some videos you shot or have example of things you want to shoot? will be interesting as you might could achieve a similar look in a different way.

For Raven, I've built my lens collection like this:

Zeiss Contax 25 (2.8), 35 (2.8), 50 (1.7), 85 (2.8) and 135 (2.8). They have been cine-modded locally. Also Tokina 11-16 (2.8) and Canon 70-200 (2.8) non-IS and a Canon 100 mm Macro (2.8). All the lenses have FF coverage and in case I need to shoot with 5D Mark III (and Mark IV in near future) and Sony A7S II, these lenses can be used. I don't mind f 2.8 as that's the maximum opening that I'd go in a movie shooting.

I hope my collection would be just fine for my Raven.
