  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lenses for beginners

yea, as im testing more in-depth, my opinions are changing. Those charts are pretty bad. Thats said, in real world shooting, where im looking at them, its not so terrible. The 24 is kind of a mess wide open, but for the price.... can you really argue?

Shooting with it more tomorrow, so i will have a review up tomorrow night hopefully.

I love to look at the Resolution tests at http://www.the-digital-picture.com

Thomas, this is so awesome. Thanks for the post. Love to finally be able to compare even the Samyang to Canon and Zeiss. They stand out really well - especially against the zooms but even against the Zeiss and the Canon L these are great

The Samyangs have very different levels of breathing, the 35mm much more than the 85. That said, all still lenses breathe to some degree, and the Samyangs are worth their money or even more in comparison.

I second the Contax lenses, most are still cheap for Zeiss quality, but 35mm 1.4 is ridiculously overpriced.

True about the 35mm 1.4 but when you compare to other Zeiss lenses at that focal length and f-stop it's not that bad. What you are getting is great quality glass with a high quality coating. Can't compare to the Samyang's as I haven't used them yet. Also I can live with the 35mm at f2.8 for £250.

I won't disagree. There was a time (5-10 years ago) when the Contax 35 1.4 could be had for sub $1000 prices. Oh well....

the 85mm Samyang still beats the 85 zeiss but this race is closer than the 35mm comparison. The CA on the Zeiss is very sucky compared to the Samyang http://www.the-digital-picture.com/...meraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0what the heck are Samyang doing over there :yesnod: and why coudn't they get it right with the 24mm :banghead:

I await Timur's real world test though because thats where it counts most.

Timur, be sure to let us know where you post your findings, in case here isn't the best place. Thanks in advance.

I'm very happy with my Samyang 35mm cine. The 24 is softer wide open. I think the OP still will get a descent set of glass within his budget if he gets the Samyang/Rokinon. I'm waiting for my 85mm from BH. It's expected to ship in December.
I bought the fisheye as well just for fun as its so cheap. Haven't tried it yet though

The 35mm f/1.4 Wide-Angle US UMC Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip from Samyang ... It includes a special chip that allows the lens to work with the camera's focus confirm, auto exposure, auto metering and auto white balance functions.

Does anyone know what this is? How it's used?

Also wondering about this difference with the Rokinon wich is 50$ cheaper.

Patrick,

I believe the one that is $50 more is the cine-vised version.

The Rokinon 35mm T1.5 Cine Lens for Nikon F with geared, manual focus and aperture control rings, is optimized for digital cinematography. The aperture ring has been "de-clicked" for smooth iris pulls, and depth of field markings provide an essential aid to focus pullers.

Never mind. Didn't check your second link. :) I couldn't tell you other than the brand name.

If you don't care about the Cine Version (I do) there is a groupon sale for the next 9 hours on the 35mm f1.4 for $399. The Non cine 14mm is $299 on sale at Groupon. B and H has a sale on the 8mm non cine right now as well.

For me though, I only want the Cine Version. But this is a couple hundred in savings on already really priced right glass.

Anyone has some screengrabs of the Canon 24-70 LII on wide and 70? (low light) is 2.8 fast enough for indoor shooting with available lights on an Epic? (for un-planned shots)

If you had to chose either between: 3 Rokinon lenses (24, 35 and 85mm T1.5 Cine lenses) OR 1 Canon 24-70 LII lens

1) Which would it be?
2) Do the Rokinon primes give better definition/detail than the Canon 24-70 LII ?
3) Is the T1.5 and T2.8 diference very huge for low light?

Also, is 35mm on the Epic the equivalent of a 50mm on a normal DSLR?

Wow.. the canon 24-70 looks better at 24mm than the actual 24mm Canon prime.. is that possible?

I think you're comparing the 24-70 lens at 24mm f2.8 vs the 24mm lens at f1.4.

At f2.8 for both, the 24mm looks to nudge ahead.

Hey Timur...can you test the 14mm Rokinon also? I wanna know what you think about that lens. Also how much distortion it has... if any... on a super 35mm sensor.

I don't have one. If I can find one, ill see what I can cook up.

HI Juan, yes you're right.. didnt look at the F-stop :) then again, would i want a faster lens if it meant being that much blurier?
