  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lens shopping...

Can I get some engraving to go along with my Compact Primes please? Unless that adds to cost or weight. Maybe thats the future, thinking about it why do they still engrave anyway?
 
I really hope we can get some basic timelines soon for the RPP's. Being past 4900, I suspect that I won't see a set for a while.

Uh a T2.9 18, 21 and 25mm ? Slow wides make it a complete non starter for me. The 3 reasons I use primes are 1. Speed 2. Size / Weight 3.Quality. Take away any one of these and I'm not a customer.

I've got some pretty nice choices in zooms at T2.8, and they are not all that large.

Rehousing looks good. They should up the ante on the wides...

18mm at T3.8 was not considered half decent speed 50 years ago.

This set should be aimed at (edit) $20.000 top.
One more+ for Red primes

Albert,

don't forget that they are all FF35mm (5K Epic ready) and there by the law of physics you get speed from F/1 (50mm) to F/1.4 at 35, 50, 55, 75, or 85mm focal lengths only.

I am using them in their original skin Sanjin, and it's a fine glass for what it is.
The only real deal in whole set is 85mm.
Wonder if they were able to extend the focus throw on the 28mm...

Dear Jim,

With EPIC 5K, you can crop the sensor to whatever ratio the user chooses (therefore, enabling the use of regular S35 lenses that only cover a diagonal of 30mm, instead of 32mm).

Is the same true for Scarlet 5K as well? Can you custom crop the sensor slightly so one can use regular S35 glass on it?

The Zeiss Compact Primes are a bit more than just a rehousing. Not all the glass is exactly the same. They are a nice alternative. Come see them at the Abel booth along with lots of other PL mount glass.

Then how do you explain the Canon 24mm f/1.4 L (which has been around since the FD days) ?
... or the Nikon 28mm f/1.4... Or the new Leica 21 and 24mm f/1.4...

2 Questions,

1. What is the weight on the Zeiss Mini lenses? (this can be a nice edge to them)

2. When can we learn more about the add ons for the Arri MMB?
 
I'll get back to you on the weight as I don't have the stats handy. They weigh very little.

I know our media person is working as I type on the website info so that we can post everything about these accessories. This is supposed to be up and available this week and we'll have samples in the booth at NAB next week.
 
I’m not too clear on these new Zeiss primes. If the optical formula, as some suggest is the same as the ZF primes then surely they would all breathe and would be of limited use? Surely they are designed to create a constant effective focal length regardless of focal distance through the use of Cine style floating elements rather than a stills type of optical layout and associated movements?

Michael any chance of scrounging a data sheet from Zeiss? (Particularly interested in radial distortion, for photogrammetric and stereo work, and would be very interested to learn of the changes in distortion curve with variation in effective focal length)

It seems like with the wide Compact Zeiss you are trading speed for full frame coverage. Am I right in thinking that most full frame PL glass has that issue on the extremes? Is it in part a limitation of the PL mount? (Mitch? Matthew?)... leading to the planned "Red mount" being specific for full frame or 645?
