  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lens shopping...

I have feeling the mini red primes will be perfect for 2/3 Scarlet. Just look at the video image of Izzy. That is pretty much a grey scaled compressed image, but look how much dynamic range it has, "do not let the size of the lens fool you its the speed and focal range clarity that counts".

On a different note, We need to pressure companies like Matrox, Aja and Black magic to build better down res boards and better 4k to SD compression software so we can keep as much information as we originally shot. 90% of the people on this forum need that. Or maybe Red can just bypass them and build a Red monstro board to handle offline online native editing and final rendering of the R3D codec. More money for red more jobs for the economy and another win for us all.

Everyone go watch Duplicity, what a fine Corporate Espionage flick.

A completely unrelated question, but if all lenses create image circles, then why are sensors rectangular?

ALL lenses project a round image circle. The important thing is that the diagonal of the Image Sensor is covered by the radius of the image circle of the lenses. The 35 Acadamy format has a 27.15 mm diagonal and 35 mm FULL (also called Super 35) has a format diagonal of 31.1 mm. Most current prime lenses have a 30 mm image circle and cover the 27 mm diagonal sensors in current cinema cameras-both film and digital. Red will have a 5K format that will require at least a 32 mm image circle in their new Epic camera. Note Jim's Recon... 4-7-09 post "Lens shopping.......Epic 5K ....will require 32 mm image circle.....). In fact if you purchase any lens with a 30 mm image circle, these lenses will viegnette on the 5K sensor. I can supply data off line peterr@uniqoptics.com.

Given that the best guess as to their origins is that they are rehoused still lenses, probably they will cover FF35 which means they will work just fine on Epic's 32mm image circle.

Does anyone know what the exact origins of the still glass is? Are they rehoused German or Japanese still lenses?

David, near as I can make out they are based on the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 Macro and Sigma 50-150 f2.8 lenses. HTH

This is interesting.

According to Pawel Achtel's tests [link], the Master Primes have these image circles:

75mm: about 37mm diameter35mm: 31mm diameter
14mm: 31.1mm diameter

How are these things measured? Is there a hard edge outside 31mm (on the 35mm lens), or is it where vignetting starts, or?

Trouble with any lens in a set of primes that have an image circle less than 32 mm is that you will not be able to use all them on a 5K sensor as a set. Hence, the smallest image circle is the dominating coverage format. Of course, you could always use the (above mentioned) 75 mm lens on 5K sensors. It is very simple to find out what your lens coverage is by having your rental house project a lens on a lens projector that covers formats from 16mm to FF35 and all inbetween. Usable image circle can also be measured by a special optical instrument (expencive though). See our website at www.uniQoptics.com

Hi Doctor,

A nice picture!

Let's try this again. I was asked which mount would be standard on the brains, not what is every mount available. You can have just about any mount you want on any brain, including PL mount on 2/3" Scarlet.

Jim

There are just so many people jumping the gun with their crazy conclusions.

but look how much dynamic range it has

It is not possible to accurately gauge dynamic range of a studio shot as the lighting can be manipulated and controlled to match dynamic range of the sensor.

Dear Jim,
When will you start to accept an order of your RED Pro prime set???

We will begin shipping next week and will contact our RED ONE owners 1st to see if they "are in". Then we'll open it up to everyone else.

It pays to own a RED ONE...

Hey Jim, You've announced a price reduction on the Red Primes, but not how much it will be. Any chance we can get that $$ ?
Or are you waiting for Zee Germans to put their cards down first?

I'm curious about that final pricing too.

Also about order fulfillment. I'm assuming it's still based off camera delivery date to some extent. Hopefully those of us who pre-ordered them back in '07 may be able to work our way closer to the front of the line. :sifone:

On the other hand, the IRS has me over a barrel this year and as much as I'd like to to have the primes yesterday, it wouldn't hurt if my order didn't come up right away.

IB/E has updated its website. The forthcoming "4K Primes" are in fact "5K Primes" and cover an image circle greater than 32mm.

Additionally, I was just on the phone with Arri and was assured that all but the very widest primes (as in 12mm and wider) will cover the 32mm image circle. This is the case for both Ultraq Primes and Master Primes. A formal response from a respected technical engineer is forthcoming.

When I here mention of a lens only covering a 28mm circle, I have to think that it is an old Standard 35 zoom from a few decades ago.

I've always been confused about this: Aren't some primes reserved separately from the cameras?

RED took reservations for the prime set back at NAB '07 and for a few months after. We don't know how that will figure into the equation just yet...

And they've made it a point with the new render to be more "RED-like" in appearance and appeal. And to show a render of a 14mm... Will that be available right out of the gate? Or is it going to be like the RED and ISCO/German sets where primes wider than 25mm will be coming at a later date?

Sure is a sexy render...

I wonder what this means for people like me, pretty far down the line for R1s (I'm 3306). My team has agreed that yes, we are buying these lenses, I just hope we can arrange the financing before Red asks us if we're in or not...

I presume that if we pass when Red asks, we'll drop to the bottom of the list. Is this the case, Jim? Or anyone?

Come to the Abel booth and see ...
