  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lens shopping...

For scarlet 2/3 future users what is the cheapest zoom lens to invest in. I really want to get the scarlet non fixed but there is not a mini prime zoom option. is there a lense that will zoom and also be fairly cheap.

Fujinon's lenses for Epic?

Fujinon's lenses for Epic?

When I here mention of a lens only covering a 28mm circle, I have to think that it is an old Standard 35 zoom from a few decades ago.

Fujinons new PL mount 18-85 lens, to be launched at NAB lists image format as 24.0 x 13.5mm (ø27.5mm) on the product PDF.

With 3 other new zooms about to be launched will they be crying into their sake?

Remember that with all of the non-fixed brains you can attach whatever lens adapter is available from RED or the approved vendor list (there is a sticky in the lens forum). You could use a Canon lens, Nikon lens, PL mount lens, etc. I haven't been shopping for one, but I'm sure you could find a great zoom lens from the still market that would be cost effective at the expense of the cine-style lens tolerances for breathing and racking distance, among other things.

Someone feel free to correct or add anything. I'm certainly no expert in lens options.

New Zeiss Compact Primes

New Zeiss Compact Primes

Okay... so now I can talk about real lenses from a known reputable lens manufacturer, that we have in our posession.

At NAB #C10408 we will show a set of 7 Zeiss Compact Primes, prime lenses that cover over full frame 35mm from Zeiss in Oberkochen, Germany. Made in the very same factory where MasterPrimes, DigiPrimes & UltraPrimes are designed and manufactured.

We have a set in our facility and they look very nice, have excellent mechanics, and make beautiful pictures.

Oh and they are noticeably lightweight while being very robust.

They are true cine lenses. They feature front to back:
-T* coating
-Common front diameter 114mm
-Focus is smooth with accurate expanded scales and no backlash just like all Zeiss cine lenses
-Iris scales are expanded
-PL Mount
<30K Euro / $40K for a set of 7

Full sets will be available early July.

More to come tomorrow. Have to finish my taxes :-)

Humm, interesting about the Zeiss glass. I wonder if this will hurt sales of the Ultra Primes any, or at least rentals. You all should be offering a set of 5 for less, correct? Or at least be able to buy single lenses (mix and match)

So now it currently looks like the war will be between RED and Zeiss. Name vs cheaper new player.

Interesting Mathew, I have always been an anti-war kind of man. Blood, guts, loss, death, sadness, not my thing.

I look at Compact Primes as one more option for cinematographers shooting with PL lenses to make movies about blood, guts, loss, death, sadness.

Choice is good. Its an exciting time to be looking at cine lenses that's for sure.

Michael, are they all the same speed or does it vary?

Excuse me if this is stated elsewhere, but what is the image circle of the older non 'pro' marked RED lenses like the 18-50mm? Are they standard S35 lenses, ie 30mm?

Given that the best guess as to their origins is that they are rehoused still lenses, probably they will cover FF35 which means they will work just fine on Epic's 32mm image circle.

HTH Paul

The 18-50 is thought by many to be a rehoused Sigma 18-50 which is designed to cover the sensor of an APS-C DSLR not full frame. It may still cover the Epic 32mm, but if this is true, almost certainly it would not cover full frame.

These are ZF glass correct Michael?
That's the only reason I can see for a 25mm with T2.9 and full frame coverage.
This is not a criticism, the ZFs are very good lenses.

I noticed the T2.9 right away too, Evin. So, that leaves another step in the marketing mix since if I remember right the RED primes are t1.9? Just spent a couple days shooting inside a WWII submarine and the extra speed can really make a difference.

Also, I agree on your assessment - I used a bunch of the Contax Zeiss lenses (which are the precursor of the ZFs) for most of last year on my proto Birger Canon mount and they are really excellent in every way.

Yes Evan the glass (literally) is the same prescription as the ZF primes. The mechanics are new and cine lens performance.

This explains the price delta with Ultra Primes.

Need to see more tests but they seem to be a shade better than ZF lenses.

May be no adapters, I think the mechanical design may be the reason.

Red primes are T1.8 now I believe. My only issue with the ZF/Contax designs is age, but then again my standard speed Zeiss lenses are the same vintage and they rock! The 28mm F2 ZF is especially good and actually the same formula as the T2.1 cine lens. It was one of Zeiss's first floating element wide angle lenses and the precursor to the Ultra prime series.

Uh a T2.9 18, 21 and 25mm ? Slow wides make it a complete non starter for me. The 3 reasons I use primes are 1. Speed 2. Size / Weight 3.Quality. Take away any one of these and I'm not a customer.

I've got some pretty nice choices in zooms at T2.8, and they are not all that large.

Rehousing looks good. They should up the ante on the wides...
