  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica Thalia - Large format cinema lenses

I have never touched a Leica cinema lens but they do apparently have a special focusing mechanism, which allows for narrower lens barrels without losing precision. I understand from your comment that this has not been implemented well. So if it hasn't, then maybe this problem also exists in the new lenses.

The Summilux-Cs are cam-based focus like Cooke S4s and Master Primes. The focus throw matches on each lens from 6' to inf, which is quite an engineering feat. The Summicron-Cs are less expensive and are a traditional helicoid focus mechanism like Ultra Primes. I have an issue with how they are marked - big gaps in the critical 10-30' range and some in-between non-obvious marks without reference numbers. Which any focus puller who came up pulling on Zeiss Mk2 Super Speeds and the like will tell you is no fun at all. It just seems that this should not be the case for high-end modern cine lenses costing around $12K - $20K USD each. Cookes, Masters, Angenieux, even Canon and Fujinon are all marked very clearly. I really just don't get why the non-flagship Leicas are not.

Ah, I see. That sounds pretty shitty given that Leica is arguably the greatest name in lenses. Well in practical terms, it almost doesn't matter, unless the Summicrons are imposed upon you by either the director or producer.

I just worry about it because I know from first-hand experience how unforgiving the job of focus pulling can be, and it's only getting tougher with larger sensors and higher resolutions. But if the 1st ACs out there don't mind, then it's ok with me. I don't pull focus anymore ;)

I just got confirmation from BandPro...

"The set of 9 lenses will go for about 180,000 Euro"
