LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Deciding between two sets

Deciding between two sets

After scrolling through this message board and seeing images from Olan Collardy on the UMP I fell in love with Leica-R. So much information and inspiration is coming from these boards.
I'm trying to piece together a great starting set of Leica glass, opting between these 2 sets at the moment. I was hoping Mark could maybe advice me on how these serials would match? I'm thinking the second set would be overall best quality, all around 1987 production. Except for the 24mm, which is not that old and in mint condition! On the other hand, the first set has 2 summilux lenses which would match well... Any suggestions when looking at these sets? I'm confused wether I should match production year or serial numbers?

Leica R Sets

Summilux set

80mm F1.4 Summilux - 1982 €2.100 - 3203187
50mm F1.4 Summilux - 1982 €1.100 - 3232149
35mm F2.0 Summicron - 1985 €1.100 - 365662
24mm F2.8 Elmarit - 1998 €1.000 - 3837202

Totaal €5.300

Summicron set

24mm F2.8 Elmarit - 1998 €1.000 - 3837202
35mm F2.0 Summicron - 1988 €1.400 - 3477718
50mm F2.0 Summicron - 1987 €700 - 3633190
80mm F1.4 Summilux - 1986 €2.400 - 3398948

Totaal €5.500

Generally with Leica R's, for blind matching (not testing side-by-side), your best bet is to get serial numbers close to each other, the years generally will line up fairly well if you do it that way.
While generally you might not encounter it, it's important to keep in mind that you may find one with a serial number close to the others, but it was an early copy of a newer revision.

The Pebbleplace database has most Leica R's listed on it and separates them by revisions.
All of them list the years of production, and some list a rough serial number range.

For both the sets you listed, I would guess the main lenses will match fairly well as they're all fairly close to each other in serial number, but the 24mm more than likely will not match as well due to the 10+ year gap.

Hi.

We shot a short film on Leica Rs with an Iscorama Pre 36 about quantum physics and nano lasers.
Sounds complicated? Not at all, just watch the movie and you´ll understand :)
Mostly 28mmV2 & 50mm Summicron & 100mm (and a Black Promist)

Thanks for this wonderful group and all your help finding the right lenses for me.

Looks great Christan!

I finally finished an edit with the Leica summicron-R's (35mm, 50mm and 90mm). First thing I shot with them, allthough the edit was lying here for a couple of months.
Here is a link to the video. Would love feedback on how to improve.

Hi Wander, I've been traveling a lot recently and hadn't checked the board in a while so didn't see this but Brandon gave sound advice. Personally I prefer the 19 over the 24 and it matches the others better too. But can always tweak the set out more after the initial purchase... good luck!

Playing catchup on the board and its so nice to see some newer examples posted... great work guys!

Here we have footage from a recent short film. Tim Bieker shot with RED EPIC-W and my Leicas:

Thanks!

Since it's been a while since anyone has posted something here, here's a music video I shot with my Leica Rs-cinevized by GL Optics on Helium with Tiffen Glimmerglass

Hey everyone,

Thx so much for this thread, I learn so much and have a lot of pleasure with all your picture. I think you turn me into Leica and now I gonna jump for real.

Right know, I have a sigma 18-35, canon 50 1.4 and 100 macro L. I could not afford a RED right now, I used to work with 5D and C300, and since few month with GH5 and EVA1 mostly.

I think the 28 V2 will be my first choice, I am following few on EBAY and probably buy one in few days. I love the look of the Leica R, and the fact they are small and light because I mostly work alone or with very small crew.

My question is about the price right now because at the beginning of these thread you talked about glass which was way cheaper than now and do you think they are still good deal in comparaison to new lenses even at their very expensive price. (19V2 for example, or 90 ASPH).

If you have to built a set right know, do you still go to Leica R ?

Thanks for your honesty :)

Ever since I finished my Leica R set 3 years ago I haven’t looked back!
If anything they have been the lenses I choose most for my shoots than anything else. I’m no optics expert but they continue to outperform (at least in terms of sharpness) some more “modern” lenses to this day-at least the newer mid 80’s+ ones. I love how they flare, and the overall look they produce, sure the CA is pretty bad-but for “vintage” glass they are okay.
Yes I’d jump on them again if I was in the market for lenses today-especially since the industry is going large format and the Rs cover it.

Though I'm biased, I'd still go with Leica Rs in a heartbeat at today's prices. To me the character alone is priceless. But yes, if you simply want clean lenses devoid of character, then you're better off with more modern options. There are of course other vintage options too, and its a rather personal decision, but again for me there aren't any others that even come close. Yes CA is present sometimes but I've also been surprised to find more 'modern' glass showing more CA/purple fringing by comparison at times.

Good luck building your set!

Question, I picked up and early 90’s summicron-r 135mm. The image is lovely and the glass clean. But the aperture ring is just the tinniest bit loose and not as snappy on the open end as my other leicas. Anybody else run into this issue? Is it going to be a problem or an expensive fix someday? It still moves through the stops fine, it’s just not always a strong click/snap on some stops. Thanks in advance!
