  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

They're all fine on Red. That chart is specific to using them on Canon DSLRs.

hey mark, care to explain the differences between the 19mm V1 and V2, the V2 is apparently pretty pricey these days, is it that much better on super35?

also in your opinion, is it worth rehousing them? i heard the still leica lenses has slightly longer focus rotations... what do you think?

btw would you pick the 50 over the 60 macro? i am just weighing the pros and cons, because the difference is not huge 50 vs 60, and the 60 has the added benefit of macro...

PS: i know this is a heavily debated subject, but how does the contax primes vs leica r compare? do you think leicas are more unique in term of look and feel?

Shawn, I'll give it a shot but keep in mind these are just my opinions. Trying them out and deciding for yourself is usually the best solution.

Both 19s are great but at 6k v2 is noticeably sharper along the edges with less CA wide open until about f4 where they draw similarly. On super35 the edge differences should be less apparent. V2 seems to handle spectral highlights and light sources more cleanly too. Some prefer v1 for its warm vintage leica character, others v2 for optical performance. Both are all-Leica and the price difference becomes less apparent after you make the other investments, whether cinevising/servicing and or rehousing.

I find the 50 is the better general lens with more drawing character and the extra stop and slightly wider view whereas the 60 is better for corner to corner sharpness and a bit more clinical. Both are great in their own right but quite different despite the similar focal lengths.

Whether you cinevise or rehouse should be determined by budget, intended use, preferences, shooting style, etc. so weighing those factors should help decide if its worth it to you. Some cinevise first with the plan to perhaps rehouse later so that's an option to consider too. In general Leica Rs already have long smooth focus throws and great build quality to boot but many need servicing to perform their best.

In my experience (to generalize a bit) the Leica's render more organic, whereas contax more clinically. I won't post about the merits or differences otherwise as they're both great and its such a personal decision that if you're trying to decide then try them both, and choose the one that puts a bigger smile on your face :) For me its clearly Leica Rs and love my early 80s vintage and late 90s sets that cover anything/everything I enjoy capturing. But the next guy may find that magic in contax or somewhere else and I'm honestly ALMOST as happy for him/her too ;)

Hi Guys, I am trying to remove the lens hood on my 90mm f2 leica r lens and am stumped how to do it ? Could anyone advise ?

Kind Regards
Ian

Edit : My Local lens tec, sorted it out, not an easy one with out the right gear.

Had a lot of fun working on a kung fu film in the Catskills this weekend.

Does anyone know where I can buy shims that fit the leitax mounts? Not so keen on using Leitax's own cut up sticker method.

Nice captures Kristopher!

Marcel, the best approach is not using the shims at all and just tune the infinity on the lens itself, a good lens tech can do this.

Thought I'd share an image i took with my 50mm Summilux R and the front element of my V1 19mm R lens that had been damaged beyond repair.

wow nice. can you show the setup?

Nice look!

I'm also curious about your setup. Did you somehow mount the front element of the 19mm v1 in front of the 35mm, or were you just holding it?

Uros, Mark - It's been a couple of months but finally got around to taking some pics of my DIY Macro setup which I used to shoot this footage. As mentioned earlier, the front element comes from what used to be my Leica R 19mm V1. I'm using snot tape at the moment to keep it in place, the 19mm enclosure has the same size threads in the back as does my 50/35mm lenses so I've been thinking of getting a ring in order to attach them more securely.

Clever DIY approach to macro Abe – thanks for posting it!

And no pressure or anything but it'd be great to see some motion work captured with this setup, if/when.

I have a question that bugs me long time:
How do you prevent this "micro-shakings" on the image when start focusing with a (remote) follow focus on leica r glass ..?
Earlier I thought that this is caused by adapters from Leica R to EF mount - But now I have the Leitax Adapters on my Leicas and this still happens.

Do you know what I mean? When I start focusing, the image shifts a bit

Christian - This would be known as image shift.

Depending on your lens it can be nonexistent, moderate or severe.

If the remote motor is pushing too hard on the lens casing it can effect it. do you get the same effect when hand focusing ?

You can minimize image-shift in shot by starting the focus movement in the direction you want to go, stopping before the shot starts, then continuing it when rolling. Reversing focus direction in shot will maximize the image-shift. Using a follow-focus setup can also minimize the image-shift that can occur when the varying pressure of your hand unintentionally moves the (loosely internally geared) focus ring.
