  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Great as always Dominik. Now I have to get a 135 as well !! :)

Just a small question to anyone who has a 28mm 2.8 3rd version.. I am trying to order 80mm front rings and caps for my lenses.
Can anyone tell me what tread size it is cos I cant find it. I tried to measure it but I am not sure if it is 47 or 48 mms. Duclos has both so I'm confused.

Thanks

kirk,
it's 48mm.

Thanks Tommaso - You just saved me a 100 bucks cos I was going to order the 47. Cheers mate !

This is just one of those moments I want to step back and thank you all for the contributions to this thread. I am so happy with my Leica R set and I's even happier at all the great knowledge and the work being exchanged in this thread.

Cheers to all you Leica Rers, (err, that doesn't type out as nicely as it sounds) out there!

David

Well a big thanks for starting this David. It's become much more than the picture thread you began a couple short years ago...

Cheers!

Here are a couple from the 180 f2 apo summicron on an a7rii. Closed down a bit and this lens captures great macros.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is fixable?
I recently purchased a 19mm on Ebay and the front element has some "haze or fungus or ???)
it seems to be on the outside of the lens.

Hmm, can you feel it with the tip of your finger? And does it come off at all with a lens solution? My guess is either scuffs to the outer coating, or some form of damage to the underside of the front element. And if its something below that can be cleaned it probably won't come cheap. If the seller didn't cite the issue and it doesn't come off easily I'd probably opt for a return/refund. On these 19s damage to the front optic is quite common (due to the the way it protrudes) and has a significantly greater effect than marks on the rear in my experience. Have come across many issues on these 19s and returned my fair share. It seems good ones are few and far between these days and usually go for a good bit more.

Hey David,

Just wanted to say this is one of my all time favorite threads. Read it as often as possible and love all the pics.

So thanks for setting it up in the first place. Tremendously enjoyable.

I would also say that at over 100 pages, somebody at RED might want to notice and finally build us all a killer RED Leica R mount!

I know, I know, won't happen.

But one can always dream.....

Thanks Bud!

A killer posi lock PL style Leica R mount would be awesome!

Hmmm. That has me thinking....Time to visit an Italian CNC shop. :)

Hey Leica R enthusiasts, if money wasn't an issue, would you swap out your Leica R 35/50/85 1.4 summiluxes for the 28/55/85 1.4 Zeiss Otus primes? Why/why not?

This is a decision I'm facing, would love to hear your thoughts.

Don't own the 35 or 50 lux. But something tells me if I did I woukd prob just save up more, keep my lenses and still buy the otus lenses. I'm sure there are projects I would want to use each on and since YOU already have the leicas you don't have to buy them back at higher prices while you can always but the otus at lower prices on the used market (compared to new)

The Otus and Leicas are completely different looks, it's hard to directly compare the two. It's really up to what aesthetic you're after.

I spoke with Matthew Duclos about the Otus line and he absolutely loves them. He was telling me that the optics are basically the same as Master Primes, though Zeiss would never admit it. So if you're looking for the clean, sharp, Master Prime look, the Otus are perfect. I witnessed the Otus through a lens projector as well, it was absurdly sharp throughout the entire image. We then compared the Leica R and there was certainly softening around the edges.

The Leicas have their own characteristics. Sharp in the middle with some fall off (more than Otus) and the lower contrast. They really have that nice vintage aesthetic. Otus are the most pure and clean image you could possibly get.

So hard to compare. The Leica's are vintage with a classic look and the Otus are a brand new lens design with a different look altogether. One thing is for sure, lens design and aesthetic is an art form.

Our choice learns toward all the factors depending on the images we want and need to create.

Either could be perfect given the particular circumstances. And I don't say this to be fickle, really it is a subjective and aesthetic choice.

Matching. That is a different discussion.
