  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Music video I shot a while back with my set of R's. Mostly used the 50mm 1.4, 35mm 2.0, and 100 and 135mm 2.8. Couple of shots with the 24mm 2.8 and 90mm 2.0 (Thanks to Mark M for sourcing most of the set for me)

Shot guerrilla-style in a day and a half around LA.

Great work Daniel! And I love the grading! Did you cut it too?

Nice Work David - That is so very clean yet with character. Perfect for that piece. Always love the look.

Well done. Color was great too btw.

Great look and execution David! Those nice warm colors really brings it to life.

Thanks Guys. It was all Dragon STH BTW, love the combo of the STH with these lenses.

Quick question for you Leica R experts

I just put together a set, but have a couple questions about the front rings

Is there a way to convert the 19mm Ver1 and the 28mm Ver1 to have a 80mm front? I have a 35, 50, and 90, all of which I can use a 55mm-80mm step up ring, but I'm having trouble finding a ring for the 19mm Ver1 and 28mm Ver1.

I believe the 28mm is a 48mm front, so I should be able to use this 48-80 from Duclos right? http://www.ducloslenses.com/collections/step-up-rings/products/80mm-step-up?variant=216086334

But how about the 19mm? From what I could find, I think it's an 88mm front, so would I need an 88mm-80mm reduction ring?

Hey Brian, the 19mm V1 front diameter is actually 82mm.

Great stuff coming through in this thread.

Here's a little something I did recently, a mix of the 19, 25, 35, 50, 80, 100, and 70-210 angi zoom.

Thanks for sharing David!

Which lens at which stop did you use @ 2:47 in the edit?

Duclos carries both but their 19mm v1 step-down may not be listed on their site so I'd give them a ring.

Hey tommaso,

that was the angeniuax zoom probably at 210, I had ND in so it's probably f4 or 3.5 (wide open for that lens) that zoom has a ton of character, same lens on the three girls walking arm and arm.

Thanks David!

I had the Angie 70-210, it's a true gem!

Playing around with the 50 1.4, 80 1.4, and a Bolex 1.5x anamorphic adapter on front. Shot in 6k.

Nice! What adapter you used to attach it to the 50?
How it looks with the 35, 24 and the 24 M, I'll be very interested. I use the Panasonic but it's too blurry in the corners unless you have f16 and above where it becomes less blurry.

That Angie lens is magical. It's hard to describe it any other way. It's got a bit of a yellow cast but once you dial in the grade the character of the lens just pops. I used it extensively on a shoot in Versailles and it just had this quality and character I really liked.

Its quite light for a zoom and it's also a macro lens as well.

All aroubd just just a very useful lens and it cuts well with the rest of the Leica lineup.

I haven't posted this here before, but here's a blog post I did comparing the Leica R 50mm with other 50mm lenses (Cooke S4, Schenider Xenar, Zeiss CP.2, Canon 50mm L)

http://www.thebriannguyen.com/2015/11/one-lens-is-not-leica-the-rest/

I would be interested in conducting this test again with a different Leica, or directly comparing individual Leica Rs. I recently sold the Leica R I did a test on (50mm V2, SN# 294xxxx) and replaced it with a later year (SN# 343xxxx). I have a feeling it may be sharper as there was some very slight hazing on the rear element of my former Leica.

Either way, it was a fun test to do and I look forward to conducting some more once my full set comes in!
