  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

I use my OCONNOR CFF-1 with the lightweight 15mm rod bridge to raise it up to work with the Leicas. I use the lightweight 15mm to 19mm adapter from Shoot35 to attach the unit to my 19mm rods. I also have the Shoot35 follow focus. But, it is geared for too much focus throw since it seems to double the throw. Around 700 degrees for most of the Rs. It does work great for Rokinons and other still lenses with a short focus throw. Seems to be a solidly built unit.

The Shoot35 just arrived last week and had only tested it with my 28 (shorter focus throw) which worked great but now see what you mean with some of my other Rs. I've looked at the OConnor CFF-1 too but wanted something that worked well with my setup out of the box.

Sounds like the Vocas FF may be worth exploring too. Any recommended models?

I used to have this issue with the last version of the Shoot35 FF. I emailed them and for £30 Wayne got me a custom made gear in a larger size. I imagine it can't be too dofficult to do the same for the r3 version.

CFF-1 is an amazing follow focus, though obviously in a higher tier cost-wise. For an owner-operator, it's a no-compromise option, and can work with just about any camera/lens/build you can imagine. Because it has so many points of adjustability, it lacks the simplicity of an FF4/5, and isn't as immediately adored by camera assistants, but when lens barrels get fat and or extremely narrow, it's nice to have something that can always manage to reach and perform.

Great pics Felipe! I like how you've framed it. Artistic and balanced angle.

Welcome Filipe!

Enjoy getting to to know your lenses and hope to see more here!

Looks nice and sharp!

Is it as amazing as they say it is? :)

Every time I use a Leica lens Mark I say "This is my favorite lens!" but I think if you ask me to have only one lens and no other for the rest of my life it'll be 100% this one - no question about it.

My opinion on this (like almost all other Leica lenses) is that is way under priced. For it's range is better than I could have imagined. As previous owners told me is: really as amazing as they say or more. Think of the best primes at 2.8 and that's what you get or better I think and as another owner advised me from 35-70mm.

At 2.8 is sharper than other lenses at 5.6 or 8! Also the bokeh is very gradient/creamy at 2.8.

However... as you told me long ago it does not hold focus when you zoom. I'll have a second copy for 3D soon -a newer serial - so I'll see if that one is like that also.
I read that is extremely difficult to make a lens at 2.8 that will be zoom 35-70mm and hold focus. But if I want that particular shot I can go F:4 and use the older one.

Also... is not heavy and huge at all as some people say. They have no idea what is heavy... this is a very balanced baby lens for me!

I just this week got my set of 5 (19 2.8, 28 2.8, 35 1.4, 50 1.4, 80 1.4) back from Duclos for the cine mod. I'll be shooting this week and report. So far I love em, small, sharp, EF mount (I'm often traveling with canons as well) decent focus throw, fast, FF coverage and pretty glass. I'm not sure I'll be using my red primes much in the future.

the mighty 60mm macro again from last weekend:

Wow, it seems like a great match with the 70-180 2.8 apo.

If the late one holds focus and its still your favorite lens a few weeks from now, it'll be that much more tempting...
