LEICA R on RED: Pictures

mistakenzach.jpg

The last thing I shot on my Epic with Leica R lenses came out a couple weeks ago. The jpg above is off the Leica R 24mm.

We came up with this video to promote my friend's documentary "Mistaken For Strangers" which came out earlier this year. There are clips from the doc which obviously I did not shoot, and the opening interview bite with Matt Berninger was shot on my 6D. But all of the Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson footage was shot with Epic and Leica R. I don't know how to embed Funny Or Die videos so here's a link:

I sent my Epic in for the Dragon upgrade the morning after we shot this, so it was a wonderful farewell voyage for the Epic.

Great work and love the flares! nothing quite like capturing the real thing.

And its effective (now I wanna see the doc :)

Hey guys,

Any thoughts on the 28-70 f3.5 '1992 Olympics' model?

I'm in the market for a decent zoom ahead of a trip to Cambodia and thought it might be a good time to finally try some Leica glass.

The best zooms are the 35-70/2.8 and the 70-180/2.8, but they are hard to come by & $$$

Thanks for replying.

To be honest I'm just wanting a 'taste' of the Leica flavour rather than chasing the highest rated lenses so was wondering about these cheaper zoom such as the 28-70 f3.5 and the 35-70 f3.5.

Nice one, thanks.

So maybe I'll get the 35-70 f4 and something like the 50 f2 for a budget introduction.

EDIT: Ha, just seen the price on the F4s. A bit steep for me for just a little play-about lens.

Ben, go for it I don't think their is any differences in IQ between the fast and the slow zoom.
I found mine a three cam in pristine condition at 500€ but it was more than 2 years ago,
today it seems like the Leica R glass have been raise in price.
Good luck.
Here is a link of my first test with the 35-70 (F4) and Epic during a demonstration (First of may) in the streets of Paris.
All shot on a monopod at 75Fps and 5K FF, nothing serious there, I even didn't use any filters at all that day.

Thanks Brice. I think that's what I'll do as they all look smaller and lighter than my Contax glass so will be good for being on the move. Definitely get a feel for its rendition in your video, cheers :)

Out of interest, is this 28-70 f3.5 '1992 Olympics' lens to be avoided for any reason? Only that slightly wider focal length makes it more practical if it's any good as a bargain zoom.

I'm afraid the 35-70 has a much better IQ than the 28-70. ;)
Never used it so take it with a grain of salt, but I've heard the 28-70 wide open is terrible.
For the same price on the second hand market, the 35-70 is a no brainer.

I currently have two 35-70 F4s and have found them very sharp at all apertures, with beautiful Leica colors/glow plus the native macro feature is surprisingly good.
The design is apparently based on Leica's much rarer 35-70 f2.8 (currently $10k+), which used such exotic glass to achieve the faster speed that it was too expensive to continue producing, despite the high price tag.
Only a couple hundred of those were ever made and according to Mark Penderson (who has an awesome set) the f2.8 version is not cine-friendly, whereas the f4 is.

Why is the 2.8 not cine friendly? I had one and it was great. From talking to Mark in the past I think he had a bad copy that didn't focus smoothly. Mine was smooth, held focus thru the zoom, and had very little breathing. If you have the $ for one it's worth it in my opinion over the f4 version.

Hi Chad, thanks for chiming in. Was only sharing some second-hand info about the 2.8, but your first-hand experience sounds much better.

I've never owned one, but would love to of course (now you're really tempting me;)!

Here's some recent nature imagery from 2 Leica R APOs.

First from the 180 apo 2.8 Elmarit on Scarlet X. The next two are 70-180 2.8 apo zoom crops.
