  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

LEICA R on RED: Pictures

Hey Vincent,

same optics, the lens is good, just keep in mind its mfd is a an insane 1.7m which makes this lens unsuitable for most commercial jobs...
or at least bring some diopters (achromats if possible given the quality of the lens behind) and be prepared to bring these out often!

Thanks Tommaso, yep, I'm aware of that. To be honest, I will use that one to replace my trusty but tired Canon L 70-200 II and I mostly shoot "action" with that lens.

The Rom is basically only the chip for communication with the Leica R Camera bodys.
As far as I know there is only one version of the 70-180 2.8 Apo

Let me know if you need any cine mod services. I am based in Austria and offer them.
If you wand a full mod with a gearring on the zoom ring you have to take off some part of the support foot.

Hi Bastian,
Thanks for your reply. Aware about what Rom is but I couldn't find any info regarding if glass or mechanism changed before and after the introduction of Rom.
Reading your comment and Tommaso makes me pretty confident design always remain the same for that lens.
I'll definitely keep you posted when I get one as cinemod will be the first thing on my to do list.

Hi Vincent, over the years have read that there was/is an issue with veiling flare on the initial non-rom version, which was later corrected (not sure when). Though I've owned both early non-rom and late roms, I haven't specifically tested for this but can confirm its a magnificent zoom and noticeably "better" than Canon's 70-200, at least in my experience.

Thanks Mark! Stoked to read that.

Hi Guys,

While I am waiting for the release of the black Komodo, I am in the process to start building a Leica R Summilux set, but I find that getting a Leica R 35mm Summilux lens is really hard and the price compared to the 50 & 80 is wayyy higher! So have the following question:

- Does it makes any sense to get the 35mm M version instead?

- My reason to go summilux aside from being high speed, is to get a better resolution with full frames cameras such as LF, Monstro, etc...would the Sumicron hold as well in full frame formats?

Thanks!

Carlos

Hi Marcel I saw I saw you work A Dark Place in Amazon and loved it! Congratulations!! Andrew Scott is also an amazing actor.

I am in the process of building a Leica R Summilux set and I was wondering your thoughts on the 70-180mm Duclos Leica R and how much did you use it.

Thanks!

Hello guys.
I have a set of Leica R with adapters to EF from Leitax.
The problem is: when I change the focus direction with a remote follow focus the image is wiggling (especially with the 100 macro).
If i change the focus very gently with my hands I can mange to focus smooth.

So, is there a good solution for the focus wiggle problem with remote follow focus system on the Leica Rs (with EF mount)?

Thank you and all the best
Jules

These lenses were never built to withstand the torque of remote focus motors. Be gentle, low torque on the motors, focus the old fashioned way with your hand or a full rehousing of the lens so it can be used as a cinema lens.

Hey Jules, a CLA (professional servicing) can often solve that issue in my experience. But sometimes if a lens has been tampered with, its not an easy fix.

Cheers
Mark

Does anyone have the Elmarit R 19mm V2 for sale? I’ve been looking for a little while now.

I looked for a very long time for my 19mm v2 with high serial number. Even longer because I was hoping to pick up a Duclos EF cine-modded version. They pop up on eBay very rarely and once or twice in this forum over a year or two but often not V2. I ended up purchasing mine from George Ohara at "Encore Camera / Leica Great Buy" (see link below). Unfortunately I had to go the un-modded route and send the lens in to Duclos to be cine-modded (Leitax EF Mount, 80mm Step-Up Ring, Focus Gear, Collimation, etc.). George was great to deal with and I was able to pick up a very late model 19mm V2 in practically new condition but it wasn't cheap. If he doesn't have what you are looking for in stock he has connections to source them and he found me exactly what I was looking for as I ordered a few focal lengths from him and then sent them all to Duclos.

Anyone have both the 80mm lux and the 90mm cron with video that compares the two? Trying to decide which to get to round out my set, which is a more modern set: 19v2, 28V2, 35 Cron, 50 Cron, all 35+ serials.

I have both.
In your case I would go for the 90mm cron.
Will fit better to your set.

since your set is Summicron, I'd stick with the 90...although the 80mm is easier to find and I personally prefer it to the 90 (But I also prefer the 35 and 50mm summilux). The 80mm has more character. The 90mm is too clinical for me, but a better mate to your 35 and 50

Hi Roddy, I love pairing anamorphics with my set. In particular, the Kowas really compliment the Leica Rs. I shoot with the Kowa 35 1.75x and 1.5x Inflights and also have a 16h 2x that works very well. I use a Rectilux HCDNA variable diopter to keep everything single focus. With a s35 sensor, the 35,50 & 90 Crons look lovely and avoid vignetting. With a FF sensor, 50 & 90 avoid vignetting. There’s lot of great footage using Leica R and Kowa anamorphics together on Vimeo- just search for Leica Kowa and you’ll find some good stuff.

Thanks for the insights Greg!

Color Matching question for cine sets:

I have the following lenses so far, all recently acquired individually:

19mmV2: #387XXXX (1998)
28mm V2: #370XXXX (1995)
35mm Summicron V2 E55: #384XXXX (1998)
50mm Summicron V2 : #335XXXX (1985)

I have a general question about how closely you were able to match lenses when you put together a "matched set?"

I know these will never match perfectly, so I'm not looking for that comment, but rather your real world experience, ideally not just what your eyes tell you, but something a bit more concrete. For example, I tested the four lenses last night and all were different, but the 19, 28, and 50 were at least within the same ballpark.

The 35mm is over a 100 kelvin cooler than the rest, which was a bit surprising. It's gonna have to go most likely and get replaced, which is a shame as it's in really great condition.

This wasn't a perfect scientific test at all, but I tried to test in about 5 different ways to see how consistent the difference were (using color charts, natural daylight, tungsten, Aputure 300dmk2 LED through diffusion, etc), using the custom white balance on my camera (Canon C70) for each lens, using Custom WB for just one lens and then seeing how the rest do at that setting after pulling into Davinci and matching, etc.

Here is are the readings on my Canon C70 using custom white balance on a X-rite video card 18% grey in natural daylight. The readings in some of the LED indoor night tests were not quite as matched as this, but the overall pattern is consistent.

19mm: 5600 +1
28mm: 5600 +/- 0
35mm: 5710 +2
50mm: 5600 +1

Depending on what method I use, I may get some bigger differences between the 19, 28, and 50, but in all cases the major outlier is the 35mm, both in terms of tint, but especially in terms of temperature. The above test was the best case scenario. In some tests, the difference was more like 250-300k between the 35mm and the 19mm/28mm.

Looking at the serial numbers and years of production, it definitely throws off the whole idea that we can just trust matching based on close years of production.

Since I'm very new to this Leica R game, all thoughts and insights are very welcome.

Thanks!
