  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

I have read that the 24mm is not really a leica lens . It was designed and made by Minolta.
Reviews say it's OK, not spectacular. this is only what i have read from internet reviews, and i haven't tried it my self.
I think the 19mm is the one to have.

Well if it says Leica, its a Leica lens and is made to their standards. But not all Leica's are alike and yes the 24mm is made by Minolta (as are several others including most zooms). It is a great lens, but the 19mm II and 28mm II are amazing lenses. The 28mm especially.
There are two versions of the 28mm though and the later which is the more desirable lens has a built in hood that is not removable, so if you plan on cine modding be warned.

I'm building a set as well ;) The 50mm Summilux (which looks like it was never used) arrived yesterday. The 35mm Lux is on its way. Do you guys have opinions on the 24 vs 28? I'll probably go with one or the other.

I'm thinkin...

19mm Elmarit
28mm Elmarit
35mm Summilux
50mm Summilux
80mm Summilux
100mm Apo Macro Elmarit
and the 180mm Summicron which I hear is awesome.

Is your 50mm the latest version? above sn 3794XXX

As a Contax RTS fan and owner, I can't wait to see how these Leica lenses look on the Scarlet! Have been dying to see how their "impressionistic" approach to color translates to the big screen.

Have been slowly reading about the Leica glass on fredmiranda, about their subtle differences to the zeiss's. Their approach to color and photography is a little more refined I think, and possibly more special.

I am very indebted to my Contax set, has taught me a lot, but I have no dillusions that there isn't something magical about Leica's. My dad has collected them for years, and got into Minolta because they were (in his eyes) the closest Japan ever got to a Leica look (indeed, Minolta even designed and produced glass for Leica).

Has anyone tested Minolta MD glass on RED? Would love to see how that looks. In particular some of their special lenses, like the 58 1.2

Can't wait to see some of your footage guys.

best,

- Nick

Exactly. The Allstar Adapter is a 2 part threaded assembly that clamps down on the original lens bayonet flange, providing a VERY secure mount. When the lens is mounted on the Red it feels more solid than it did on the original DSLR body. Good stuff!

Wait, is the Allstar system available/approved for Epic? If so, where can I buy it?

I beleive it was designed by Minolta but the QC and coatings are Leica It behaves perfectly well. You will like the 19mm V2 and 28mm V2 better but the 24mm is still good.

Well, I'd been to that page and clicked on "Red"; turns out, the Epic mount is under "Camera mount base", for those who are looking.

One thing I couldn't determine is if the Epic mount is Red-approved...anyone know?

I beleive it is, it on this forum somewhere with a post from Jarred.

Hello.
With most Leica-r I'm buying step-up rings (80 external, 77 internal thread).
Just bought the 19 II v and realized there's no internal filter thread.
Any idea to a solution?
Thanks

Have you tested the 24mm...I thought the 24mm didn't work on Canon mt because it protruded too far. That would be great news if this wasn't an issue on the Epic.

The epic does not have the flipping mirror so it should no be a problem. Works on canon as well if you work with the mirror flipped up before putting the lens on. Then using the screen instead of view finder.

Good eye, that is the latest 19mm. 28mm is not shown, but it is an amazing lens.

Some of my examples shot with Leica Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8

On the 19mm V2 you need to make ( or have made ) an 80mm ring - not difficult, but no off the shelf solution exists as far as I know.

Sanjin, Is thats the mk2 28m or mk1 ? Very nice which ever.

It's an older mk1 and when you stopping down @ 5.6 it has best result (anyway f/5.6 is a standard and optimal aperture for daylight or even tungsten if you can light it).

Matt, can you point me to the manufacturer of the "100 tooth m.8 gears $42.50 each"?
Cheers
