Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

Thanks matt,

reading your first post, have you send the lenses to duclos ?

Duclos Gears / Fronts approx. $ $250 / lens

If your in europe then opt Out Engineering in the UK can ad gears and declick iris or perhaps Action cameras can help. They have just done a great job for us. Id strongly suggest using an A mount on the Lens is better than the EF route. Its very solid and PL like.

Another possibility is to buy a Leica R lens mount for the Epic. One is being made here in Australia and looks terrific. It is waiting approval by Red.

These lenses were converted at Opt Out Engineering in Bristol UK. The conversion is completely reversable, then gear ring clamps on, the gear it self has no screws through the teeth as its attached to an almuminium ring mounted on the lens it self. The 80mm front arnt yet fitted.

Is that the Allstar A-mount on the back? Love the gear rings, interested to buy some.

Yes, thats an A mount, its also improves the Leica mount for Cinematography use. The gear rings are very solid. We chose white so they can be marked but you can also have black.

Yep, Sanjin. That is the one I am getting. I was going to get my Leica Rs converted to Nikon mount until I found this. The Leica R mount feels much sturdier than the Nikon mount.

Rob, congrats!!!

Yeah, it's a bit better in all ways but unfortunately Leica R is discontinued and Nikon as a photo camera brand still rocks pretty good.

That is true Sanjin. I have loads of Nikon glass as well. I was tempted to just put nikon mounts on all the Leica R lenses I have. However, I have decided that, given the ease with which the mount can be changed on the Epic, it is more convenient to use a Leica R mount.

I think the Cinemods mount looks great

but

If you have both Nikon and Lecia you need an A mount...

It looks like the PL-like locking point in the A-mount system would be solid since the flange is beefy, but wouldn't the connection between the Leica R to Allstar adapter introduce some flex and play? Does anyone using this system have experience with rotation play and/or flex on the Leica mount. I have noticed that using a FF is not idead on DSLRs for this reason, especially on longer lenses, because the image moves during focus.

@ Robert Cauble: There is no play in the All-Star Mount because it utilizes a positive locking system to stills lenses. The rear flanges that mount on the stills lenses lock down tightly, and then the allstar mount latches on to them tightly.

Exactly. The Allstar Adapter is a 2 part threaded assembly that clamps down on the original lens bayonet flange, providing a VERY secure mount. When the lens is mounted on the Red it feels more solid than it did on the original DSLR body. Good stuff!
