  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

Only the focus element moves out/in. I made a longer barrel with the focus gear this way it covers the gap and the overall length remains the same. The "front" rotates with this mod. Mechanicly it is near cinema quality len - holds focus/ilumination all the way while zooming:)

Brian - does the 70-180 f2.8 Vario keep it's outer dimensions when you zoom and focus ? Does the front rotate when you focus ? Looks like a formidable lens... how suitable for motion work is it ?

Never worked with the M. They are said to be better than the R series.

I checked this on another thread, opinion was the glass formulation is the near the same. There are a couple of lenses in the M range that arn't in the R range though. We don't have any M glass here but it would be good to get a detailed run down on pros and cons of both.

Also you mentioned 280mm Apo do you refer to the Modular lens or one piece lens ?

I would get the whole modular 280 - 800mm setup - but my wife would kill me:). The 280mm with apo extenders is probity just as good and much less expensive.

Two questions. Is the focus throw on the Leica Rs long enough to use a regular cine follow focus (eg the cine chroziel as opposed to the video model)? Secondly, do they rotate the same was as regular cine lenses? Thanks.

Yes it is long enough 270 I think. A couple of lenses 24mm (I think but need to check but its w wide lens) being one only have 180 rotation. It rotates Cinewise.

We have the Modular 400 Apo Telyt lens wih 1X focus module, (I need to find a 280 head) we had it converted to PL some while ago and also some Leica Apo 1.4x and 2x convertors also converted ot PL, suprisingly inexpensive to have done. Beyond any doubt they are fantastic lenses. We are considering wheather to get a 280mm (non modular) or just a modular head. I am unsure if the spec is identical.

PS, my wife wasnt consulted before hand so I sympathise with you......

Hey Matt,

These look like a great option. Are you noticing much difference optically between the summilux and summicron versions?

I've not done side by side and I'd like to. Since the set was always going to have some focal lengths at 2.8, and my objective was a set that was cheap, rugged, replaceable and small I skipped the Summilux's. You can find opinions on the net that will place the lux's or cron's as being a hair superior to the other at a given stop.

Summilux and Summicron are different mainly in the out of focus area character. They are both very sharp if anything the cron's are reported sharper but they are very obviously out of the same stable in their Leica Look. They both stop down to f16 though the Elmarits to f22 which can be useful at times. I would be quite happy with either cron's or lux's, we happen to have lux only because we had a 50mm lux and then found good 80mm and 35mm but they took some finding. From the start of our search for lenses over 18 months the price had increased 2 to 3 times.

Nice set Matt! I've been slowly collecting my own set as well. I've been thirsty to see some examples with Red and Leica R's. But there aren't much around.
I feel like I'm becoming the next Sanjin because everytime Leica is mentioned I'm there. Usually hoping its about the R's though haha.

Evin, I'd love to hear your thoughts on them, as I've followed SALT and found it a great resource. Also always love hearing the opinions of other glassaholics.

Optically I had the impression, that my 50mm 1.4 outperformed the Masterprime in center sharpness, but not corner sharpness. In real life, the slight loss of sharpness in the corners never noticed.

Brian, I totally agree. And while other, newer lenses tend to be more uniform with their sharpness edge to edge. I've found Leica's outstanding in the center. And think that the corner softness actually lends a little to the signature leica look.

I've been tempted to just rent the set from Duclos to see how they all are. And then pick and choose which lenses I want to buy to complete my set. I still need to get mine cine-vized anyhow.

Thankyou Sanjin, that is an absolute wealth of information. Quick question, when looking at these lenses on eBay etc can I assume that these lens have serial numbers that indicate there age. ie 309xxxx would be older that 367xxxx

Thanks again!

Justin,

maybe you already saw but just to remind that there is one of mine two years old quick & dirty handheld shots with R1 and Leica Summilux-R 50mm f/1.4 on Vimeo>>>

Ok, this is totally infectious. I have started my own Leica R collection. Just need a 19mm to complete a very workable set. I got to try out an R series 50mm f2 on my Red and fell in love with the image.

The 50mm is also my favorite. Truly amazing. Also looking at the 19 to fill out my set.
