Leica R Cine Conversion - aprox $8000 high quality 7 lens prime set in Canon EF

Justin,

maybe you already saw but just to remind that there is one of mine two years old quick & dirty handheld shots with R1 and Leica Summilux-R 50mm f/1.4 on Vimeo>>>

Is that the series I or II Summilux?

Just a little fun fact in case anybody is having the same problem I had doing the cine conversion. Some of the 90mm and 135mm (I believe pre 1980) say they are E55, but a 55mm step ring does not work. They actually have a 54mm filter thread and you need a 54-55 step up, then I went 55-72 for the hard front. The 54-55 step up were available at B&H.

Greg it is Series II and I remember had Formatt ND 0.3 and CircPola on Vocas 4x4 mattebox but RC color science in that time was leaning more to blueish image...finally this time is over!!!

It has a very nice look to it, Its hard to put your finger on it I think, these lenses are just so well ballanced. I am so pleased these lenses work with Red.

Leica R's in Canon mount for Cinema - A work in progress

Leica discontinued the R line in 2009 leaving some bargain lenses out there…not made in huge quantities.

Hi Matt and all.
At this price I imagine in your beautiful set you're mixing lenses from different decades.
What about multicoating and color/contrast matching across the set?
Thanks
Alvise

Within the same series they are very consistent. On thing about Leica quality control is it is exceptional in its consistency. If you purchased the same lens having the same glass formulation say from Minolta or Schnieder the Leica lens may have a Leica coating on the same glass formulation but I bet the quality control would be much higher standard on the Leica lens. Im sure Sangin know much about this.

Some early lenses which I personaly like obviously do have older coatings, one reason I became attracted to them was via the work of James Ravilious who has very nice photographic work of the english country side. Apparently he prefered the older coatings or put it another way may be shied away from the newer high contrast coatings for his photography.

Can you elaborate on "same series"?
Is it the same as the "version (optical formula)" mentioned here: http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Leica_db.html?
But then, I see lenses of the same version possibly made in very different decades. And lenses made in the same year not sharing the same version.
It took me a lot of wrong purchases to get a decent set of Nikkors. Different color casts, different coating conditions leading to different contrast characteristics. Sometimes the horrible glass element shifting when changing focus direction.
But then, old Nikkors are so cheap I gladly accepted this buy/sell, trial/error process.
I was on the way to fly to St.Petersburg and pick up a set of Lomos converted to PL, but the more I look at that sexy set on first page, the more I want one. hehe

Some questions about the 19mm version 1 and 2. Is it possible to fit the version 2 with an 80mm front (as in the Duclos mods)? Version 2 does not appear to accommodate any kind of screw on filter. A more general question. Is version 2 really that optically superior to version 1?

Series=change in design. For example the 50mm Summilux has a Series I and Series 2. Yet in the Series I there were several variants (2-cam, 3-cam, ELC and ELW versions)

Generally speaking Series II will be a significant improvement over Series I, this is the case with both the 19mm and 50mm, which is why the price is considerably more.

Series I Summilux 50mm has 7 lenses in 6 groups where Series II has 8 lenses
19mm Series 1 has 9/7 vs 12/10 is Series II

You can make ( or have made ) a 80mm ring that uses set screws - not difficult to make. I've not compared version 1 with 2, but the v2 19mm is really really really good.

Matt, how did you get the lens's for so cheap? I am looking at ebay and the prices are double what you paid for them? where do you go to look for lens?

Are you looking at 3 cam lenses ( SN# typiclally over 27xxxxxx ) but non ROM - ROM is the electronic lens reporting system, does not help, does not hurt, might jack up the cost.

Ebaying takes a bit of patience! The best prices were when it was a legit auction - I would just set Bidnip and let it do it's work. Took a few weeks to fill out the set. A few lenses had to get sent back. I was looking for slightly used, but not abused.

Yep. Thanks for the info, Matt.
Ordered some Leitax adapters. Have you tried to screw it 90° counterclock on Leica mount as to have focus/aperture marks on the side instead of on top?
