When you lower the brightness below anything but max (via the two + / - arrows on the top end of the LCD) my LCD begins to buzz.

It creates a sort of high pitched whine.

Just wondering how many others out there have the same issue?

LCD, by nature, do emit a low whine. In a super-quiet environment, you will hear that whine. So it is only abnormal if it is getting to be loud.

Well Brent I know what you say is true and I haven't heard the RED lcd whine myself but have used lots of HDV prosumer camcorders with lcd's that if they whine do not do so loud enough for me ever to hear them. Is that because they are lower resolution?

Alex, everybody's RED LCD buzzes. At least that's been my experience after using roughly 15 LCDs personally and hearing the reports from a few dozen other camera owners. Maybe the newer LCDs don't buzz as much, so if somebody corrects me... it's merely due to the limits of the breadth of my experience.

But not every LCD on the market buzzes. Many do, yes, but I've worked with many different LCDs [of different sizes, resolutions, formats and purposes] that don't buzz audibly. The technology itself may emit a low whine, but they all don't whine as loudly as the RED LCD.

That said, as far as professional [onboard] LCDs go... the RED LCD is one of the most silent I've worked with. Many similar purpose LCDs have onboard fans to join in the fun as well.

So in a super-quiet environment like a film set, you will hear the LCD buzz or whine. The good news is that it's forgivable.

Now if only it was metal... :)

Good to hear that I'm not alone but bad to hear Brent & Brook. (No pun intended).

I just don't remember the whine being as audible in the early models I shot on.

It is quite loud.

Alex if you wanna send it in so we can check it out if you think there its unusual, thats not a problem.

Yep- I noticed this when we got 291. currently the recommended solution if it's a problem is an ND filter or a hoodman and leave the brightness all the way up.

I supect that it buzzes at full brightness as well, but that it's just out of range of my hearing. Our audio engineer can hear it when I can't- or he's just trying to impress me. ;)

Maybe it's like that mosquito ringtone that can only be heard by young ears, when it's at full brightness.

Just was wondering if the oled displays buzz? This could be a future fix, if not... albeit an expensive one.

Beyond a low buzz

Beyond a low buzz

Mine did as well...and it was the loudest LCD I've ever heard...but that isn't the odd part. When I first got it it was pretty much silent. Then after three days of shooting it started. I would almost say it was a whine more than a buzz. Shot one day like that tried everything...until...restoring the camera presets made it go away. It hasn't been back since.

crazy- I haven't tried anything with the presets yet. I wonder if it's due to the signal it's getting from the red, and that it could possibly be fixed in the firmware?

Mine buzzes. Also, the plastic frame border thats attached to the front of the screen, feels like it could just be pried right off. Anyone else feel that with theirs?

i couldn't understand you .
you mean this buzz has gone when you restor something in camera settings
or presets (like what .what did you do)

Problem solved... Stuart found the bug in the build. Brent will give details on how to download the corrected build.

So I was up the mountain today with the wind blowing and the snow falling and I could still hear the whine coming from the lcd when I was a few feet away form it.

It's damn loud.

is there anyway to solve this?
edit:

using build 15 v2.2.1
