  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

lcd/accessories price

I didn't personally realize that the mistake was made and that it took two corrections to get it right until today. Our web guy lives in Shanghai. No excuses, it got past me. I accept responsibility. To stop this from happening again, we will go dark until NAB for any further changes. I expect at the end a more favorable situation for reservation holders, but we'll all just have to wait and see until then. Prices will be locked at that time... until we decide to change them again.

Jim

No problem Jim - and please don't feel that you need to be on top of everything. Perhaps now it is my place to apologise, I realise that under the amount of strain you are currently experiencing it is not possible to keep all the balls in the air all of the time - if any of them are going to drop, this one is probably the best bet!!!

Hopefully you can understand how it appeared to me, so lets bury the hatchet on this one and both have a good day!....

Once again, all the best mate...
Dom.

Fair enough.

Thank you Jim and the whole RED team to make the impossible possible.

Clearly any specifications and prices prior to NAB and maybe even at NAB are somewhat speculative. These are not delivered parts sitting on a shelf, they are in the process of designing and manufacturing the first run of parts.

What irritates me is that on every thread there are a jillion terrific fans "Jim can do no wrong" "JIm is my hero" etc. then when a speculative price changes by a slight amount this major offended thing. Where is it written that every thing must be revealed to you? This process has been so much more open than any other camera manufacturer that I can't believe all the carping since the price announcements. The prices on everything so far have been more than fair. There now I sound like a fanboy...

Maybe we made a mistake by trying to force prices out before NAB. We have 14 people working their asses off trying to get everything done.

So... if you are disappointed, we are sorry.

As for what "was" last year, please remember the BIG, BOLD LETTERS, "things will change, count on it." We have been very open in our process, always with the caveat that things will change... specs, prices, everything. And they have. We have lived up to our word.

Now if you are irritated about how we are doing, just send your "R" back and get 110% back on your deposit. You can always jump back in when things have settled down. But please stop complaining about things changing. That is the one thing we promised from the beginning.

BTW, the camera is ten times what we talked about a year ago. Look again at the specs. The best you could do on a budget was 2k RGB. That is now 4K REDCODE RAW.

Sorry for my irritation, but if we are causing you frustration, the best solution is for us to go dark until NAB.

One last thought... we aren't done changing prices. At the end, probably to your advantage.

Jim

Perhaps a big red "prices and specifications subject to change without notice" sign on the pricelist page might be helpful. Posting prices gives the impression of locking things in stone, even if they aren't really...

Cheers,
R.

Good point - I have to say, it wasn't clear to me that the price list was subject to change in the same manner that the Camera specs were - obviously I've taken that on-board now! But that would certainly stave off any future confusion....

EDIT: BTW, an Oscar nomination for a short film's still pretty damn good, Ruairi!!

Now, at the risk of sounding like a "fanboy" also:

facts
- Every reservation holder will get a device they could only dream of for the price they could only dream of
- Red crew is taking the time to interact with this community, to listen to people and give advice
- We have all been given a chance to witness and influence the development of something that will eventually go down in history of cinema/videography

Maybe I'm really living in a surreal world of make-belief, and this is all usually seen everywhere, or maybe my low self esteem makes me spend my time kissing asses around the globe......or maaybe people like to take things for granted.

A simple calculation of an average day's fee with RED ONE can easily wipe out that feeling of shock caused by a sudden price change.
I cincerely doubt the charges will be one sixth of the usual price.

AFAIK there is a disclaimer on the pricelist page.

Anyho -;)

We'll all be happily shooting with a Red one way or another within a year.
The price is in any context wildly low, compared to any other total camerasolution I've been considering the last two years.

The specs, even if you take the hecklers POV - are higher than anything else on the market for buying.

Let's just sit back and see what will be offered and be gratefull that this time we are all hopefully @ the right time and place to see some real change in the way cameras are built, codecs are written and prices on pro gear are estimated since the first pro video equipment came around.

At the very least, the price list has given us some ballpark figures so we can assemble budgets and know that we are within a monetary range that is feasable. I had only a basic idea of what some of the accessories might sell for, and now that there are more solid numbers, as well as the allowance figure, it helps out tremendously in putting together a package.

Jim owned up to the mistake, which I give him kudos for. Honestly though, I've planned on waiting until everything is completely official to hold them to any of it. The pricelist serves its purpose for now. To me, what's announced at NAB will be closer to the Gospel.

Steve

we will go dark until NAB for any further changes

This blows! You guys happy now! I sleep on this site for any little info released until the big day (NAB). For people asking about adding a "Subject to change with out notice" on the price list.... Give me a break! Jim has always said sh•ts gonna change. You guys aren't new to the site. I'd expect a newbie to ask such questions. All we wanted, well at least myself was to hear any update made to the RED. Kiss that goodbye....

I do think we're all a bit spoiled. Spoiled by a company that is seeking to reach the independent filmmaker. Spoiled by a company that is doing things differently. Responding to its customers in a way no one would EVER imagine Sony or Panasonic or JVC responding. When's the last time the CEO of Sony got on a web forum the same afternoon to answer a question. The very reason why the camera is so revolutionary is part and parcel of Red Camera's unique, totally progressive manufacturing and marketing model (i.e., make a camera "for the people" by being "one of the people"--Jim Jannard has said himself he's also a customer of Red). And so let's not forget: this is a start-up company! A start-up company which is actually accomplishing something that was not going to happen without Red...at least not this soon. And having worked at start-ups myself, I know the only thing that one can count on is chaos. The reason why Red offers a product this good for this price point with this speed of responsiveness to its customers is because they're a small, driven, independent outfit. Why should we want or expect them to act like Sony Corp. who needs to go through a hundred marketing employees and a thousand board meetings before releasing ANY information. So what if a price changed by a couple hundred dollars. The whole thing seems like a steal at twice the price, and a hundred bucks here or there isn't the issue. The issue is we're getting a camera that just might make our indie movies look as good as Miami Vice and Zodiac and Superman Returns. At this point, we should cut 'em some slack, because it's looking very much like Red did the very thing no one thought was possible. :-)

I agree! Theres guys out here (like me) watching the boards daily who aren't even reservation holders and would kill for one of these cameras. we appreciate the process and any updates whatsoever. youre getting a camera this year and have something to complain about!?!

now theyre totally justified going dark. way to go.

Prices will be locked at that time... until we decide to change them again.

Hehe.

Actually, if you get a chance to mention it to the web guy, you should have him change a minor price or spec once every day or so. Just to see all the people freak out around here. :clown2:

For a forum where people are buying a $20K+ camera system, the "Oh, no! The price just went up $200!" threads are a hoot.

this is one of those classic "bite the hand the feeds" moments.

and its too bad.. cause things are starting to get really interesting at RED...

thank god NAB is just a month away.

I fully expected you guys to "go dark" as NAB got closer--you guys have a lotta stuff to do! It's crunch time--we gotta let these guys get down to business! I'm sure it's in the best interest of RED's final development phase. And if it's good for RED, it's good for us!

. . . we aren't done changing prices. At the end, probably to your advantage. I expect at the end, a more favorable situation for reservation holders, but we'll all just have to wait and see until then.
Guys, are you listening to Jim? This just keeps getting better and better! Even at the status quo, reservation-holders have already been given a super deal on a super camera! NAB will be here before we know it. We just gotta hold our asses for a few more weeks! Let's give the RED team all the support we can. These guys are gonna be working their asses off (and have been for 14 months) in the coming days preceeding NAB! I'm sure a lot of long nights and cold pizza are in the offing. Keep cheering them on! GO, RED TEAM, GO!!!

WELL SAID, SEAN! EXACTLY my thoughts, as well. I've been meaning to write this same post for sometime now, but you've saved me the trouble, and wrote a better one than I had ever planned! Damn good post there, Sean. You outta post more.
