  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Latest Scarlet Beta firmware = 5K FF 24fps!!! @ 9:1 Compression

I just checked the metadata on the clip Aria posted and he's being 100% honest. He shot 5k @23.976, RC 9:1, and with a Scarlet.

Edit: Drew beat me to it :)

Ok, some clarification from RED would be nice at this point.
What's going on? I can't even download the beta anymore.

This would steal a bit of the thunder from the BMD and AJA announcements if Red decided to implement this into their Scarlet line. Again, for the record I would not be offended as an Epic owner. I think it would really help Red stay ahead of the game, but then again I am just one man - and a pretty easygoing one at that, so my opinion may not represent the interests of the majority.

I suspect that scarlets are capable of 24p, but likely some will not perform the same as others, or could possibly overheat, and therefore Red limits it to what it can consistently do on all camera. Likely the 24p got enabled on a build for scarlet dragon, and was not disabled again.

If Red could enable 5k, I think that would be great. It would not affect my decision to upgrade my scarlet to epic, because as epic owners know, they can do a lot more then that.

Yes, looks legit. And he shot even 39fps@5k, RC15:1.

What now?

the 40 (39, actually) fps does not seem at all like slo-mo... i have a feeling it's 12fps with messed up metadata

so before everyone starts tripping over one another with conspiracy theories, let's first verify that this is a legit happening.
then we can discuss burst modes.

I agreed

It definitely would! All the NAB buzz on Twitter thus far has been about Blackmagic.

Beginning to wonder if this thread will be shot down eventually.

This is the proof that it can actually be done - at least for a short amount of time on certain models if not all. Imagine what the possibilities could be? I still want 4.5K WS 24/25p or perhaps even 5K WS 24p.

not sure how i feel about this....for years we hear about scarlet not being able to do this and all of a sudden they pull 39fps@5K out of the hat? just in time when the competition gets a little tighter? very fishy.....

We're looking into it.

The Scarlet memory configuration is not designed for higher sustained frame-rates at full resolution. The system may become unstable or you may run into corrupt footage.

Will someone get fired for this? (lol)

At 15:1 compression. Is that even useable?

Red wants people in on Dragon, why would they unlock a feature that would discourage Scarlet owners from the upgrade?

If with a firmware update Red could position Scarlet so that it remains competitive, or better yet if the 2-year old Scarlet could kick the other guy's latest and greatest camera's ass they could claim major bragging rights. That is one possible reason why they might do such a thing... If they could.

that is not the point....i have an epic anyway and never really shoot under 5:1, so i don't even want to know what 15:1 might look like....the point is that if scarlet can do 24fps at 5K now, it was capable of doing it years ago and all the nagging and whining on this forum actually had a point....it would be very, very strange to all of a sudden have a "real" 5K scarlet...now that everybody else has finally caught up to 4k....what a coincidence....

Makes sense. Remember Scarlets are made from boards rejected for Epic, but some of those boards are likely perilously close to Epic standards. Others not so much. My hunch is that if this firmware upgrade were permitted, some Scarlets would become an "Epic lite", while other Scarlets would overheat...maybe catastrophically.

paul, there's obviously some kind of bug here. either involving metadata or otherwise.

have you watched the clip? i'm not sure it's running at 24fps, much less 39/40.

whatever this is, i highly doubt it is a marketing ploy where red planned out an organic viral attack on nab via a single scarlet.

i would imagine simply because if it was true i doubt it would arrive unannounced.....
