  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Late...

J. We are doing the best we can... which also means we can't satisfy everyone.

Jim

Just thinking aloud, but since the Scarlet HDR programme is now most definately being implemented, would it be possible to offer the option at purchase,in the most simple terms possible, leave the boards out?

Jim,
I just registered after 4 years of following daily to say "Where can I send the food to your engineers, and how many would I be feeding?" They deserve a lot of credit for their hard work. I hope you let them know about the redusers and you broadcast our appreciation to them DAILY!

Hey Jarred and/or Jim - Is it still realistic to expect Scarlet by the end of the year? (It would be nice to know for tax/fiscal year planning)

Thanks!

I posted this in the Scarlet thread, but it seems more relevant here.

I'm not a RED engineer, obviously, but speaking for techies in general:

(and, BTW, this is no criticism, you guys are awesome, more power to y'all)

3. Engineers are optimistic.

Well, of course we are. We better be. Otherwise, dealing with all the hardware crap day in and day out, hidden away from sunlight and real social interaction all day long in a tiny cubicle, we'd go insane.

4. Stuff changes. We have added capabilities along the way the complicated the process.

Man, most business people have no idea just how much this sort of thing pisses us off. It's called "moving target" or "shifting specs". It's like having the greatest sex of your life and then you can't finish.

Anyway, enough of that, carry on. Looking forward to playing with an awesome Scarlet camera some day.

Jim,

Make the camera YOU want to make! thats the only way to truly make everyone happy. Trust me on this one.

It's a work of passion Jim! What you are doing is great! My biggest concern is the fact that you guys want to constantly add features...which is great but at the same time keeps pushing the camera back over and over. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate all the new features and I'm looking forward to them, but at the same time I hope at some point (sooner than later) that you will stop adding more stuff that prevents its release (and just release new features as they are developed). The Epic is already a pretty damn impressive camera as it stands. :hurray: Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the update Jim, get some sleep why dont you. The rest of us can shoot with a RED one in the meantime. More then you could say before.

ok Jim,

as a customer if you want us to forgive your companys delays then you should share more HDRx footage with us:))
then we may think about it:)

More time to recoup on my red hot M-X sensor (which is almost an EPIC)
and more time to EARN $ to pay for all this cool new shit. WIN-WIN for current owners.

For future owners... RENT the M-X in the meantime, its far cheaper than owning, and will make all of your scripts and jobs look GORGEOUS. You might even earn the extra $ you need for Scarlet HDRx

Please Help Me

Please Help Me

I'm understanding of your situation. I love what you guys are doing. That's why I have a sub account with bank of America called "Scarlet". I know you are ahead of the pack by miles... But honestly, there has to be a point where the runner stops running the race and enjoys his victory. Otherwise, you'll turn into Forrest Gump.

I know you don't want to give times you can't keep, but frankly it's too late for that... The damage is done. These consistent "delays" have left me confused as can be with absolutely no idea when I can expect to have a Scarlet in my hands. Jim, I'm begging you... Give me some idea. Are we talking Scarlets by January-March of 2011? April-June 2011? July-December 2011? 2012? I just want some clue when I, as a new RED customer, could hold a Scarlet. I don't care how wide the timeframe is... I just want some basic idea. Please don't answer with "I don't give dates"... I'd rather hear October 2010-December 2012 than that.

Thanks for all you do.

RED has never let me down. These delays just give me more time to shoot with my MX and build more anticipation for the EPIC.

I know by now to have no expectations in the world of RED.

The products will not be released when I expect them to be

But...

When they are released, they will go beyond any expectations I ever had

Keep up the good work and take your time.

Hey Jim,
Thanks for the update! As others have said, keep on trucking. No one remembers that it's late, only that's awesome. We're not going anywhere :-).

As someone who's been a pro software developer since the age of 16, I understand what you're saying on #3 and have a different perspective. Remember that engineers working too many hours make MUCH buggier code than well-rested, goal-rewarded engineers working 50hrs a week or less and taking weekends off. Good code is brain work, you can't cram the widgets through. Now we're getting into mythical man month stuff (9 women cant make one baby in one month). But you know all this, take your time, dont kill yourself or your people, make it awesome. We're sleeping tight because Red is awake :-)

When Steve Jobs was asked if he was upset that the NeXT cube was delayed for 6 months, he said, "Late? It's not late, it's 10 years ahead of its time!"

He was right. Mac OS X 10.5 runs code I wrote under NeXTstep 1.0a. No shit. It was 50 years ahead of its time. AND STILL IS.

RED is too.

When I worked at Apple, I asked Avie Tevanian how his team was able to change history and meet dates in the software industry at the same time. In the most Zen advice I've ever gotten, he said, "From the start, we focus on delivery."

Of course, that assumes one knows what one is delivering. Science and discovery by definition deal with unknowns.

In "The Ultimate Machine", Kirk says, "Genius doesn't work on an assembly-line basis, Bones. You can't wake up and say, 'Today, I will be brilliant!'".

When the camera is ready, the market will appear.

G-d Bless the lucky ones down there in the trenches with You.

And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered -
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;

And gentlemen in England now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whilst any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for the up date and all the hard work. You guys know what you are doing, so don't worry, JUST DO IT
