And that "my way" does not necessitate shitting in someone else's plate.

Unfortunately, this is not true. As we are all connected in one way or another, ultimately your choices will affect me and my choices will affect you. Maybe not directly or immediately, but in time, selfishness by an individual or group hurts broader society, and sacrificial love by an individual or group can help and heal broader society. But as that kind of love is not natural to us and therefore requires Help from outside of the natural world. :)

Back to work :)

Keith, first of all good work on a last moment job, but also I'm wondering did you discuss at all with the director as to why he goes with B&W and 120fps? Curious at the creative insight behind that.

Also, did it at all worry you taking a valuable RED Epic into that environment?? Personally I'd probably only dare bring a Sony RX100 mk4 or Panasonic FZ1000 for FHD 120fps in such a situation! (but then no 4K 120fps of course, "just" FHD. But did they use many crops in during the edit? Edit: ah, I see a little bit of it now I rewatch it)

Because I believe that media makers are society shapers, I want EVERYTHING that I lend my skills to, to be something that my children can see and that I’m proud to be part of… something that is pushing society forward and upward and not pushing it further down the hole of hate, violence, racism, lust, abuse, chemical dependency, and human exploitation and trafficking.

+1 to that! - Trying to do just that seems weird for the ones around me a lot of times, but nonetheless, this is also what I feel about my profession as a cinematographer / filmmaker.

Hi David,

The director likes to speed shots up in post to give the ramping fast motion. That's his thing. I believe he only did it 2 times in the final version. It wasn't used as much as I thought it would be. So a lot of mag usage for a couple of shots. He decided to go B&W that morning. (sidebar) There was a beautiful setup exterior with a blue 72 Caddy, it had the shots of the day. The magic hour sun was glistening off of the side, the artist performing by himself in and out of the car as I shot from the back of an SUV. But they went a different way with the final edit. I'm still trying to get some of those shots. It was my idea to key the blue. They left it in his hair but took out the car. Such is life.

It was supposed to be a no gun set and yes it was in real conditions. There were bullet shells in many places we went. There was a security cop there and when he saw the guns he told them he didn't want to see them again. In fact our 2nd location got scrubbed because we got there and 9 policemen were looking for evidence. There had been a murder the night before. Really! So we moved to a park with a baseball court. I did do a lot of hustling that day. I didn't worry about the gear, there's insurance, a cop and I'm not the smallest guy you'll meet. But again it was an interesting 8 hour day.

Yes he did crop in on some shots and reframed some to the left off subject.

Thanks

Just to say, I grew up watching horror and war films and reading horror and violent books and listening to all manner of aggressive music across various genres as a child and have never hurt a soul.

Yes, that is an understandable and common seen reaction and reasoning in cases like these, the principle starting from the early perspective and conclusions that the universe revolves around the observer's POV. Two points to that rhetoric.

1) That is your reality. Which you project onto everyone else as an argument here, because, according to your reasoning, for some reason the reality you have no control over, should somehow adapt to your projections. And if it doesn't, there must be some kind of error in that part of reality.

Outside of that single observer's part of reality, some child with still undeveloped mind is growing up without parents, or with a single parent working all day, or with both of them working all day, and is glued to the shiny box, assimilating idiotic content all day,
and its mind defines concepts, generates logical relations between them and attributes values based on random fiction and without any guidance. Basically being raised by the media system.

And it has to adapt to the environment it lives in. Alpha mail in the neighbourhood is babbling about a gun (enchanted by his superstar in the box) and is most feared by the herd, while that friend digging electronics/brush/microscope/telescope/books/anything which requires a brain - is less cool.

So...how you grew up, turned out, or would do...matters = 0.

2) Everything your mind ever assimilated, with or without your awareness, has shaped the way you think and feel in one way or the other. Which is known and used/abused daily and has been for a long time. Used in politics, marketing and other domains public typically is clueless even exist, while looking for flying saucers and little grey men.

When psyche continuously goes through traumatic input, it modifies the sensibility, the reaction to input. This is a built-in security system of the psyche which prevents sensory overload and further traumatization. At the cost of numbness.

Which eventually makes one doesn't care any more.

Enters 21st. century urban society.

If if kids have murderers or other terrible people as heroes censure the parents not the artists because that's where the issue lies.

One of human tendencies is putting the blame on someone else. It avoids the need for consideration of repercussions and control of own actions.

It's always nice when you say something and then someone who doesn't know you, instead of asking you, tells you what you were saying. Getting it completely wrong obviously.

Should we get rid of Nietzsche? Of Dante? Should we ban the work of Leni Reifenstahl? Of Peckinpah and John Woo who turned ultra violence into beautiful ballet? Should all people and artists who don't project a positive message according to whatever the ruling party says is acceptable be censored? Was Marilyn Mansun really responsible for Columbine? I find that line of thought vile and freedom of expression is meaningless as a concept until you are allowing people to be free to express themselves in ways that make you uncomfortable or that run contrary to what you feel is good and proper. What you posted about the psyche feels like playschool cod sociology.

I was just using me as a quick example but there are hundreds of millions of people around the world if not billions, who understand context when it comes to arts and entertainment and who don't see a violent song or music promo as an instruction manual in how to be a dick to people. In that regard it absolutely matters.

One of human tendencies is putting the blame on someone else. It avoids the need for consideration of repercussions and control of own actions.
Not where I come from it's not. We take responsibility for ourselves and our choices and don't try to blame hip hop for our bad decisions.

Unfortunately, this is not true. As we are all connected in one way or another, ultimately your choices will affect me and my choices will affect you.

It is true.

You are lacking a distinction between affecting/creating that plate and crapping in it.

Child with time learns to control its muscles. So it stops crapping oneself whenever the urge comes, which someone has to clean. Later it develops some mental faculties so stops messing up things around which someone has to fix. With actions where repercussions manifest later and are more difficult of being noticed, it takes more time for developing the equivalent control. And the adulthood doesn't guarantee the maturity.

In the context of storytelling, as with other means of expression, through education one learns the do's and dont's by understanding the principles one is using.

Or was previously toying with like a child with matches. Throwing tantrums with fingers in ears when told to stop and watch out, because it just doesn't give a shit and just really really wants to play regardless, but crying and blaming others when the playground burns down.

Maybe not directly or immediately, but in time, selfishness by an individual or group hurts broader society, and sacrificial love by an individual or group can help and heal broader society. But as that kind of love is not natural to us and therefore requires Help from outside of the natural world. :)

There is no "outside" of the Nature. Flaws and virtues are a product of natural processes. In one case they are uncontrolled and deteriorating, in other controlled and cultivating. Same forces make weeds and fruits grow, same forces destroy each. Man chooses what he'll cut or cultivate. If he cultivates his poison long enough, bye-bye Man. Nature will be fine.

"You don't care, Human ? Okay then, F.U."
/adds more chaos flavor in the mix, humans wipe each other out/
"Now let's give other species more room, this one wiped out bunch of other projects on this planet and was too retarded to fit in and survive."

There is no "outside" of the Nature.
Good luck with that. :)

Seriously, I think you have some interesting ideas Hrvoje. But if the natural world is all there is, then a degenerating, collapsing, suffocating, suicidal societal entropy is all that we have to look forward to.

But since it stands to reason that nothing in the natural world came into existence on its own, since nothing natural can come from nothing, then first cause must be outside of nature and its laws. And with that fact, there is Hope for those willing to embrace its implications.

But if the natural world is all there is, then a degenerating, collapsing, suffocating, suicidal societal entropy is all that we have to look forward to.

That would be a worrying thought...if all principles of matter applied to conscience and evolution was a linear process.

;)

I was the AC on that shoot. Yeah it was extremely last minute and I found the Director was just a Photographer that was friend's with the Recording Label. I didn't understand shooting everything in 120fps though.

It's always nice when you say something and then someone who doesn't know you, instead of asking you, tells you what you were saying. Getting it completely wrong obviously.

Okay then, obviously you meant something else and not suggesting someone else in different circumstances should think, feel and react like you, and if he doesn't it's his fault > therefore > it doesn't matter whatsoever what the mind is being exposed to and processing 24/7.

Should we get rid of Nietzsche? Of Dante? Should we ban the work of Leni Reifenstahl? Of Peckinpah and John Woo who turned ultra violence into beautiful ballet?

Discussing those notions would make sense if they had logical connections to *mentally inert individual* waving a gun in the camera with a feeling of achievement and motivating others to do the same.
Besides just the mutual "violence" category you cherry picked for the argument.

Should all people and artists who don't project a positive message according to whatever the ruling party says is acceptable be censored?

No, just offer education to those who are toying with principles they have zero knowledge of. Which affect others.

And have balls to say if something is messed up, will to consider other things from flattering ones, stomack to accept the inconvenient truth, and ability to discuss matters on which Arts and Crafts are actually based. Instead of just the techniques of putting perfume on a pig and which button does what.

I was just using me as a quick example

Yes, that is understood from the first post. It is also a common mantra and "argumentum ad populum" bandwagon type of logical fallacy.
"I turned out okay and many others do, so the error must be in those that didn't."

Because - the kids or parents working all day to pay for the mortage, while the mental sponge is glued to the screen A/B/C/D, are REALLY the culprits here so screw them. Frikkin' crazy trash.

but there are hundreds of millions of people around the world if not billions, who understand context when it comes to arts and entertainment and who don't see a violent song or music promo as an instruction manual in how to be a dick to people.

And there are hundreds of millions around the world ridiculing the "asses n' guns" OS.

And there is a significantly smaller number of those who use the feed/copulate/shelter/herd (basic animal instincts in a Man) to design an urban half-animal, incompetent of an original thought, critical thinking, more than 2 min attention span or formulating an expanded sentence, polarized between race/religion/sex/whatever, running on a work>bank>shopping mall hamster wheel.

Because if the larger number, getting themselves "entertained" by downloading in their head anything like it's a bottomless garbage can, actually understood some principles of the mind and psyche, thus understanding they were being systematically mind screwed and pushed around like Lemmings, that wouldn't really work, now would it ?

We take responsibility for ourselves and our choices and don't try to blame hip hop for our bad decisions.

1) This is not about you

2) No one is blaming hip hop but pointing to the state of society manifested in and affected by - this particular type of example.
Hip hop is not doing anything, people are. Hip hop is just one of the urban types of music which has become systematically idiotized, stripped from its quality essence it once had, and served on a pop-plate next to the Big Mac for the urban zombie.

3) No, you don't take responsibility by not giving a shit about repercussions, and seeking blame elsewhere, you run away from it.

I'm out. This is embarrassing. You are as rude as you incorrect and the leaps of intuition you jump through in order to push your agenda while ignoring any other points is far more symptomatic of problems in society in 2016 than a little relatively generic rap video.

bad form using "retards"

You are right. I forgot about the "socially correct" part of an OS numb to killings. Mea culpa. Modified.

Please feel free to point out the part which seems problematic and wrong and I'll be glad to re-consider.

The rest is a strawman fallacy.
No agendas here or ignoring the issues.

For agendas you might want to talk to these and similar.

I find it absolutely hilarious that using the "r" word is by many here considered worse offense than waving wades of cash in one hand and gun in the other if front of a 5year old.bwahahahaha!!!!! made me laugh out loud ;-)
"but it is just a music video- no harm done-just artistic expression, freedom of artistic expression" did I miss an excuse? where does it end? There was a guy 2000 years ago that tried to put an end to it. He go executed. And our society still struggles with his concept....

For the record, at no time is there a gun in a shot with children around in this video! None. Anywhere.

The song is about wads of cash. It's a different perspective on life and its situations but who am I to discard their truths?

Not sure why this convo had to go off the rails. Good post Keith... I hate rap :wink5: but I loved your message. Thanks man!

In the early seventies my sister was the President of YARC (Youth Association for Retarded Children) the teenage volunteer division of NARC (which about then was not the greatest acronym - narc came to mean something else.)

wikipedia: "The organization (ARC) was originally called the National Association for Retarded Children from 1953 to 1973 and then was the National Association for Retarded Citizens from 1973 to 1981, the Association for Retarded Citizens of the United States from 1981 to 1992, and it assumed its present name in 1992, as part of expanding its function and reacting to the euphemism treadmill."

And I worked for a year in the early 80s as a counselor at a facility for retarded children (we still called it that then). It is too bad the "euphemism treadmill" took over because it is a reasonably accurate description of the issue - many of those citizens were interesting human beings but their mental and/or social development was "retarded". It is kind of funny that we can't criticize the artistic merit of a 3 minute video but take heat for using a (politically incorrect, I guess) word that is a pretty accurate description.

The convo didn't go off the rails. A technical discussion never really materialized in three threads - the only real convo has been the discussion of societal effect/merit.
