  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lars Von Trier's Melancholia shot on Red?

OK, I just watched Melancholia. I see now that the title refers to what any fan of cinema will feel after sitting through it.

It was very painful. Terrible acting, zero story, 1/2 of the movie was entirely irrelevant and was paced so slowly and riddled with such bad lines, badly-delivered that I still do not know why I did not leave - oh yeah, because it was either that or sit in rush hour traffic.

The worst part was camera work that appeared to be from a drunken imbecile with late-stage Parkinsons, different length legs, and way too much coffee. Or perhaps Lars mounted one of those paint shakers from Home Depot on his shoulder. At least it was in focus. Can you tell that I am not a fan of hand held or available lighting cinematography?

Not sure what bothered me more, the entirely out of focus "Like Crazy" or this disaster.

I felt the same way. It did have one major success for me though... I was eagerly awaiting the end of the world as it would be preferable to sitting through any more of the film. Not his best work. The slowmo sequence at the beginning was pretty interesting though.

Shot on Alexa...

It was very painful to watch for me too. One of the worst movies I saw this year.

Which scenes in Antichrist have been shot on Red? I know that Prologue (all b/w super slo-mo) was shot with Phantom. I recall that he said that for some scenes he used some very bad glass in order to get that blurry-dreamy feel. Dunno about the rest.

"the first 15 minutes is pure filmic poetry.
but not as complete a film as Tree of Life,
by far. this is a master in the works.
searching for a stylistic voice to call his own.
Lars Von Trier is a masterful composer of
visual film-art, syntactically complex and
aesthetically profound." -RG (Facebook)

melancholia is an incredible film. and yes, not only was it shot on the RED but yeah, the cinematography was great too.

i won't go too deep into it, but just to touch on some visual metaphors and dual-meanings. take for example, Melancholia itself.

in the film it's labeled both a meteor, but it is also the emotion within everyone which becomes stronger as the comet draws nearer.

therefore the meteor itself is a metaphor for sadness. and i believe this film is about those coming to terms with this. and what is

so interesting is that you see how each character deals with this. some actors play beautifully against there own archetypal design as well.

and finally the meaning behind the magic "Cave". well, in psychology, your inner cave is known as the place where your ego dwells, and it is the

job of a psycho analysts to break through to your inner cave, where your inner most fears and desires live. SPOILER ALERT *so, in the end, when Kirsten

suggests to the child that they must visit there magical cave, it was another way of saying, in order to avoid sadness, you must turn inward

to your own magic "Cave". and it is there and only there, that you will be safe from Melancholia.

sorry for those who haven't seen it, this will make absolutely no sense. but i very much love this film, and felt a deep connection as i do with

all of Lars's films. if you have not seen this yet, please do so.

also for those of you who know Tarkovsky. Lars Von Trier's film did almost a remake of "The Sacrifice" but just more jazzed up.

see that too if you haven't.

To each their own I guess. I liked Melancholia. Like Richard, I'm also a big Tarkovsky fan.

Attended a master class with the DP of Melancholia. Nice guy, with a pragmatic attitude.

I really liked Melancholia. Got to see it at the NuArt down in Santa Monica and seeing it in a theater was pretty cool. Thought the audio mix was really nice and that theater played it at 85db for sure because it was loud. As for the movie I thought it had some beautiful shots and I liked the whole idea behind the film. Its interesting watching people come to grips with a hopeless situation. I can see why some people didn't like this movie...but what can you say, haters want to hate.

wonder if they got lucky with that hail storm, looks real.

I think all of Antichrist, except for the slow motion black and white scenes, was shot on RED.
