Laforet Video and New Canon Gear?

it's been up for 15 minutes.

Not that every one must know the 1D Canon line, but there is always been TWO Models and there will be TWO Models the "1D IV" 1.3 and the "1Ds IV" 36x24 FF.

There is NO way that Canon will drop their true FLAGSHIP FF camera.

1D series 1.3 cropped sensor first and 1Ds series FF sensor later.

NIce shoot!

A lot of speculation that the 1Ds IV will finally shoot decent video.

I won't be interested in shooting on this 1D IV until I can pixel peep the 1080p and see some charts shot. Has Canon really changed their ways in terms of how the sensor is sampled? I doubt it. But we'll see.

Looks like the list of specs I posted from a dvxuser who got them off canon rumors.com are BS, no 120 fps. Dosen;t look like a xlr module either.

At $5k I'm not excited at all about it.

Tom, you'll love the low light for your night timescapes.

The Nocturne video looks pretty good. The rolling shutter issues seem to be much more diminished than the 5D2 in the stabilized shots but the hand held shots still show a bit. Still too much really.

Yeah, the ISO rating and fast RAW bursts might be kickass for night timelapse.

Right now ISO 3200 is usable for me in RAW on the 5D2. If this camera allows me to shoot at ISO 6400 I will get one.

Not interested in the video until I see hard evidence that the artifact and aliasing nonsense is over, which I doubt.

So how many new Canon models did you have to buy in the last year to not get what you really want. This is exactly why Red in so interesting.

The lowlight on this camera in video is formidable. For a 5K camera, these are good images. But they will probably fall apart when scrutinized in any greamesque shape or form. The images so far look pleasing to my eye for the most part. But something about the highlights makes me uncomfortable.

Scarlet is looking good, really good now. I have been on the fence for a while but I'm dissapointed in the new $5k 1d mk4 for video (not stills).

Canon also just announced a 5D2 firmware upgrade allowing 24p and 25p.

High ISO/low light shooting ability will always be welcome and fun but not a the cost of dynamic range. The Laforet video shows a few things specifically:
#1 You need to light to make things look good (or at least cinematic) even if you can see in the dark.
#2 You can make 24P and shallow DOF look like video if you blow every highlight in the scene.
#3 Having a decent eye doesn't mean you can tell a compelling story (I know it's a camera demo but there's no reason to make something so vague and anticlimactic, sorry for the rant.)

That statement pretty much sums up how I feel about this.
I would never underestimate Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Arri, Panavision, etc.
but they presently and historically never aimed for what RED has solidly hit in terms of price, performance, and concept. Announcements like this make me all the more happier to have made this investment in the RED ONE.

The Canon seems like a nice camera for what it does though.

Well if you put it like that... How many new Red models have you been able to buy in the last year?

Sorry, I had to play devils advocate there...

If the 1D doesn't offer S-RAW video or raw through hdmi, I think I'll have to stick with the 7D.
