Laforet Video and New Canon Gear?

So how many new Canon models did you have to buy in the last year to not get what you really want. This is exactly why Red in so interesting.

Scarlet will be the first pro camera I buy, and it may just very well be the last. That's is indeed what makes Red so interesting.

No reason to keep bashing Canon today

Interesting, have you ordered already?!

I thought the story was great. Kid hits his head and gets knocked unconscious, has a near death experience, is chased by death, wanders through a shadow realm between life and death, is able to get back to his body and return to life, with death giving up the chase for the time being (since it's not his time yet).

So basically it's the story of RED and Canon. Canon is the Kid and RED is death. :-)

The ending of the film is 10x better than the rough cut I saw. This one ties the whole thing together more nicely in a loop.

But in the end, the purpose of this video is just to show off the ISO skills of the camera. Mission accomplished there.

Must say, I appreciate Canon's announcement and then having the camera available less than two months later. I get that RED is still relatively new and all, but how many times have we heard "coming this summer" or whatever and then it slips... only to slip again. Jim has already said the October 30th announcement will be news of another delay.

And I wouldn't knock the H.264 too much. Both it and RAW have their merits (just like having both RAW and JPG modes for stills has merit). There has been more than one occasion with my RED that I haven't needed the ridiculous image quality of RAW and would rather have not sat through hours (days) of Crimson/Redcine nightmares and would've killed for Prores/H.264 straight out the gate. Totally depends on the project, but at least the OPTION would be nice.

Not saying anything about the image quality... I think this Canon still has a lot of flaws. But as of today, you have to compare it to other cameras in the below-$17,500 price range class and that ISO performance certainly is nice. Hopefully Scarlet will be able to put it in its place.

Different companies, different approaches. One company has a "build it in the garage mentality" which I think results in cooler products and allows customers to feel like they're hanging out with them while they build it, having a couple of beers, and eventually it gets done and kicks ass. The other company is a bit more corporate and everything is more streamlined because they've been around for a long time. They live in the fancy house, with all of the fancy efficiencies. Sometimes it results in status quo.

I agree they both have their merits, but I can assure you that many people will try to push these images hard and the results will vary. H.264 just is not robust enough to handle lots of CC pounding. On the other hand, for a quick output, especially for web, no problem.

I think the more fair comparison is to Scarlet once it arrives. And hopefully, Scarlet is able to hold its own.

The one area where Red is probably not going to be able to compete for a while is ISO/ASA ratings. But then again, what use is ISO 6400 video if it's full of artifacts and aliasing and barely holds up at 720p?

It didn't even come close to 720, it looked more like 540p or 480p, more like DVD quality, which begs the question that if all of this processing is necessary, then what does the unprocessed video look like. I really do wonder how many people would call ISO 6400 video from the 1d4 acceptable.

I agree with you. But I do feel that if Red is smart, they will pour a large percentage of money and resources into making breakthroughs in ASA/ISO. If you want to piss in the tall weeds with the big boys, sensitivity is becoming increasingly, increasingly important.

Quite. And for those of us photojournalists who would like to be able to put together a video and pull stills for print, the h.264 compression and low realized resolution makes the current VDSLRs tough to work with.

Guys, in all honesty, this resolution talk in regards to these VDSLR's is sounding a touch snobbish. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all had the money to buy RED Ones or fully decked out 35mm adapters for our 1080P prosumer cameras? I've seen the whole low cost HD movement unfold and I've got to say that we've certainly gotten much further than the HDV days of old. Looking at the footage of these cameras is like an eye-opening dream come true. They've given filmmakers the ability to get the film look in both motion, optics, and price in a way that was unimaginable just a year ago. You can talk all day about moire, mud, aliasing, line skipping, color issues, and whatever else techies can come up with to downplay these cameras but the real truth of the matter is that, as an audience viewer, I didn't notice any of those faults in Vincent's 1D Mark 4video and I also haven't noticed any of those anomalies in several other clips from the other VDSLR's either, unless the clip was specifically designed to show it and even then I had to be looking for it.

As it stands now, nobody is jumping back to their HV20's or trying to make the most of the new AVCHD 24p consumer cameras out now. Shoot charts and do all the tests you want, but looking at how I couldn't even play with a 5D Mark II for nearly half a year or even see what a GH1 looked like for nearly four months due to massive backorders, these VDSLR's are evidently good enough for a lot of people.

I'm just as excited as anyone to hear what RED has to say about Scarlet, but it's looking like there could be some mean 1080p alternatives come next year.

i hope that red allready produced about 60,000 scarlets ready to ship !
i hope that thats the reason they dont announce anything.....please lord !

Kreisky,

are you already drunk???

Or...???

And they better have an iso of 25,600... If Scarlet can't at least see in the dark like a 5D or 7D, then they are failing to deliver what I want, just like how canon has failed to deliver a "proper codec".

Canon usually has two different versions of their cameras. A cropped-sensor one aimed at photojournalists, allowing them to use smaller, lighter lenses and higher frame rates; and a studio version (hence the 's' designations) that uses a full sensor, bigger lenses, etc.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet just how soft the entire Laforet demo looks. I understand that they were shooting wide-open for a lot of it, but even then there has to be part of the frame in focus. The overall muddy softness looks like early Red footage with no OLPF compensation/sharpening.

Good camera for news photogs that need to capture the occasional video clip. Not a digital cinema camera.

UNDERSTAND THIS..and you will have less expectations..

nor Canon or Nikon or any other Still Cameras from any manufacturer will present and bring you anything even remotely close to what RED is and will be offering as far as "MOTION CAPTURE" goes and that is IT!!!

This Still cameras are making truly incredible advancements in their fields of STILL IMAGING and even so I hate how they do it, sucking you in with bits of improvement and always holding something for the next MODEL, they are still nonetheless improving their systems, and the new 1D IV is the very example of it!

Now Motion capture in this cameras is still and will continue to be a high compression process and never will get to the quality of your expectations, so don't wait for it and gain some extra sleep :)

If anything the TRUE disappointment in the new 1D IV should be that those not even sports the same 18MP of the little 7D, now this is some Shit that you should complain about it!

Scarlet and EPIC will be Motion Cameras with Still capture, which were design from start with both in MIND, and are not trying to go back inside an already existing system designed for only one purpose and now make it work for two purposes totally different in each other's needs, and this is not a small task, not a small one by a large margin.

A while back I made a Rant Thread to Canon, but it was do to my status of mind in that particular period, and now i fill a bit better :) and think that Canon still is the Top Game in the 35mm Still world and with the new D IV series has again proved to be so.

RED, is however to my opinion the only true contender that can make and deliver a system in every format that will meet and surpass each and every one's expectations, as far as the handling of each body, and their fill, is a different story as you will have many that will still like and enjoy and prefer their 35mm bodies type for still capture, mostly do to the larger Thicker bodies of the Scarlet and Epic, while the MF645 world will not have this issue, as the 645 camera systems are just about the same and or bigger, other then that, I will see no reason to sale out all current photographic and video gear in any size, from 2/3 to 35mm to MF 645 and 617.

Then again.. so much has yet to be seen

People here still didn't get this comparison mix example (H264@1080p) about

Canon7D or similar HDSLRs vs. RED ONE>>>

Kreisky,

are you already drunk???

Or...???

i forgot to say:"plus solved all tec.or whatever problems"
excuse me mr. perfect !

are you sure you keeping your lenses in the right degree sunjin ?

why do you have to compare this two cameras ?
