  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Christopher,

I think it was the grade and maybe, from the look of the foreground and background compression of some shots, more standard to telephoto lenses being used. Everyone and their baby brother seems to be shooting with all wide angle lenses with the Komodo, especially the Sigma 18-35mm lens.

I think with the pairing of more standard angled lenses with the Komodo and with better grading we will see more cinematic imagery from the Komodo. No more cropping of images from wide angled lenses if possible.

Yes. I love wide angle lenses, but not everything needs to be shot with one. Or put another way, you don't need to shoot with one all the time.

I have a friend with one, but he's still waiting on some bits and pieces(like batts and smallHD monitor). I should go get it and play around with it. I have plenty of Canon batts from my OG C300.

Christopher,

When I was shooting with Nikon and Sony 1.52x cropped sensor Cameras back in the day, the widest lens I ever used with them was a Voigtlander 40mm f2.0 Ultron. I was just never into the extra Wide angle lens look or the distortion that came with them. I know some people think some distortion gives their images "Character" and there's nothing wrong with that.

I just prefer lenses with as little distortion as possible at the widest aperture possible.

Alex,

That sounds like most of us at some time or another. I think, like Christoffer mention in a previous comment, if the full Res Premium debayer setting had been used along with exposing for 800 ISO and Black Shading when appropriate he probably would have experience less noise in his image. However, us "second-guessing" someone else's results is always easy.
Too much attention to the settings of the camera, sometimes it's as easy as how much light actually hitting the sensor.:skep:

I think since the only other lighting that would be used other than the Nanlite Pavotube would be the ambient light from the neon signs of the location, 3200 was probably needed. I have seen other low light video tests in which the participants semed to think that 3200iso was the limit for the Komodo's low light abilities.

Yeah, I think maybe if they used ISO1600 with better and more fill lighting that they would have better minimized the noise along with either better noise reduction from Neat Video's Noise Reduction or the noise reduction available in Davinci Resolve Studio if they used it.

ISO1600 is suggested even if you don't want to apply too much denoise like in many other camera with non raw codec and if you don't want to lose tons of details. Fact is if you try to use the raw option of those new mirrorless camera the amount of noise is relevant too.

Cine-FPV Slow Motion Test with RED Komodo | 4K

"Here is some more footage from our RED Komodo flying on the Xhover Decoy cine lift drone with the Laowa 9mm Zero D RF Mount. We just did a test at 23.98 so we wanted to test out 4K. Since this was a test and we didnt want to overload on data, we did shoot in 4K Prores, so the image quality and grain are fairly poor compared to shooting in R3D. But we thought the stability of the drone and camera did really well and we had an amazing time flying it."

RED Komodo Settings W/Laowa 9mm Zero D:
Resolution: 4K (6K 17:9 Downscaled to 4K)
Format: Prores
FPS: 59.97 (23.98 timebase)
Shutter Angle: 180
ISO: 800
ND: Variable
