  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

I want to know what the Komodo Link does - just not sure yet. I wasn't sure if the iDevices support video data coming in over USB, they never used to so i hope that's changed because the idea of popping your phone at the end of a cable is really attractive and having it charged. Makes for a super lightweight monitoring solution.

I'm also wondering about being able to monitor with glasses - apple glass or whatever else is coming up. I've often wondered about the practicality of looking through a HUD - whether it would psychologically work in actual use.

Interesting times!

cheers
Paul

I'm suspecting that can make a phone a very viable display and likely trickle charge it while in use.

Somewhere (???) unsure where in the many threads and articles - It sticks in my mind that the pogo pins that feed the Komodo Link don't pass power to the usb connection. If true, then no power to the phone; just a video feed and control through the app.

I'm hoping that I am wrong; because the idea of popping my phone on top and having it draw power during those guerrilla shoots really excites me. Can anyone with a link let us know? Though I guess I'll know by weeks end anyway.

I don't know the exact latency. I'm betting it varies by device, network, and range. However, I will say I was surprised how low it is, like my jaw was open because I thought it would be not great. I was happily wrong. And you can adjust the signal quality which I'm sure can play a role in data transmission.

Now what I'm even more curious about is RED Link and how much improved that can be. Hoping for as close to zero latency there as possible. I'm suspecting that can make a phone a very viable display and likely trickle charge it while in use. Hoping for at least 1080p via that connection, but if it did 4K that would be cool.

It would be great if it could be charged while phone is receiving picture. But as I remember from when building a similar kind of device thats sadly not the case. Also, DJI and all the others that feed picture to IOX and Android are not able to charge. When flying drones... Its a bit sketchy when the screen goes dead, so I think if they could they would.

Talk to Garret Brown about that... ; ). He stated that he tried a head mounted VF when he was originally developing the Steadicam and it made him nauseous. But who knows, if you could “see through” the image(like Google Glass) if that would help? Part of me has always wanted to try shooting like that, but part of me knows what he’s talking about, from shooting in helicopters and your brain is getting all kinds of different input, because your inner ear is telling it one thing and your left eye is telling it something else and your right eye is different, too. Maybe Dramamine would help with a HUD/head mounted VF, too...

What about putting rangefinder dots that indicated near-far focus on whatever the center box of the HUD showed? It would be all about 3D telemetry rather than overlaying images from multiple perspectives.

I haven’t tried it, but I thought that the controller for my Mavic 2 Pro has the option to power a phone while it is hooked up to it to keep it charged.

Super excited to be receiving my Komodo next week! As I only have manual focus Leica and Zeiss lenses and want to purchase some autofocus lenses, are people finding any differences between the performance of the Canon vs Sigma AF lenses on the Komodo?

Can't say on the Komodo specifically, but I can say from experience that my Canon 24-70 f2.8ii is a bit quicker with focus than my Sigma ART 18-35. Notably, these are zooms and not primes, so that may not help. Hope it does!

My thinking is the slow-mo's are from the Red Weapon and all the non-HFR stuff and fast action are from the Komodo.

Has the existence of back focus adjustments been mentioned? Kind of important aspect of cine cameras that I'm not sure has been mentioned? Is there any screw on it for that?

No in-camera adjustment for back focus.

Reposting from another thread due to no responses:

I'm a first time RED user.

How do I import my footage from the Komodo into Davinci Resolve 16? I've tried dragging/dropping the RDM, RDC, R3D, and rtn files with no luck. I can view the footage in the RED player from RED's website, but I can't actually view/edit/color the footage in Resolve.

Clearly, there's something I'm not understanding. Any help would be much appreciated.

CAM,

there are a couple of different ways to import Red .R3D files into Davinci Resolve.

Way 1

"Right Click" inside the Media Page and "Import" your footage from the desired location.
