  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

Nick,

I was thinking the same thing especially in these frames where the plane passes these two buildings, no skew that I could tell.

Exactly. For a camera with this level DR, we don't normally see this.

Now imagine in DSMC3 an 8K, 10K or 12K version of the Komodo sensor?

Keep in mind that at 27mm wide, Komodo's specs don't line up with RED's normal 30mm/29mm S35+ sensors like Dragon, Helium and Gemini. It's an odd duck.

But when you extrapolate Komodo to 8K, its EXACTLY 36mm Vista Vision.

Coincidence?

BTW for fun, if you want to keep playing this game, here are other extrapolations:

A 10K Komodo sensor is 45mm, wider than Monstro's 42mm

A 12K Komodo sensor is 54mm, which is almost exactly Hasselblad Medium Format.

Just saying.

I have no idea what's going on over at RED, but if they can accomplish all of this in a little Komodo.

Imagine what they can do with this global shutter tech in much larger sensors in DSMC3.

Nick,

You make things sound very intriguing for what could possibly be the DSMC3 cameras and your logic adds up!!

Thanks Rand. RED has consistently been ahead of the curve on numerous cinema developments. So no surprise they'd continue that trend.

With RED ONE, they championed compressed RAW and 4K.

With DSMC1, they championed smaller bodies (EPIC, etc)

With DMSC2, they championed larger sensors (MONSTRO, etc)

And now with DSMC3, I can see them championing Global Shutter.

Not saying it's where they are going, just saying it wouldn't surprise me.

As high-end filmmaking continues to be more CG and VFX reliant, global shutters become more important.

A 12K Komodo DSMC3 camera could become invaluable on tentpole productions, and offers a feature set that neither Arri nor Venice can supply. Even smaller 10K and 8K variants will be valuable.

Pair that with a squadron of 6K Komodo crash cams, and you start to where maybe RED is going.

Nick,

It makes you think that if Red has gone after the "Rolling Shutter" monster what other Sensor demons are they currently fighting that we are currently unaware of that could yield an even bigger industry first for the DSMC 3 cameras?

I think pushing global shutter tech is already a major achievement.

I think the rest of DSCM3 will be pushing what DSMC2 lacked: internal ND's, the next evolution of the Ranger studio body, etc.

But yes I'm sure there will be one or two more surprises.

Maybe higher frame rates? 200fps at 4K?

Nick,

I was thinking of an Organic Sensor that also eliminated Rolling shutter, with a 8k sensor or higher and with much higher frame rates at full resolution (150 to 300fps). Now add 24 to 30 stops of Dynamic range, With even higher fidelity of colors. Lastly, a fully integrated body the current size or slightly larger than the DSMC 2 Cameras(Not Ranger Size), needing no separate modules.

Well maybe that's DSMC4.

For now we know DSMC3 is around the corner, and Komodo is here now.

I'm assuming one is a limited preview of the other.

But obviously none of us really know, so we'll have to wait.

I just want something higher definition than real life.

There's a short clip from the Komodo of a skull on a stand at around the 12:30 minute mark and dog at the 12:51 minute mark.

Thanks Curtis!

Yes, the 0.95 are for MFT mount cameras. Jason was talking about similarities in terms of Nodal Point with DSLR/Mirrorless cameras, specifically Panasonic's GH series cameras / Sony Mirrorless + Voigtländer lens a couple of minutes earlier. You probably slept in for a second or so....I know this video is extremely long, I can tell you I got square eyes and a headache after 6 hours of watching. ;)

You can't use MFT mount lenses on Komodo. Except you want to see the lenses image circle and like to be unable to focus to infinity. Go for M-Mount Voigtländers (VM) instead. Metabones has an adapter for this.
