  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

KOMODO....

It's not an ideal test regarding DR but pixelpeeping from the highlights and the shadows from both cameras, I see similar results with my eyes on a 5k calibrated monitor... at least from the 1st comparison test.

Honestly can’t tell much from that footage. Skin tones... highlight roll off, shadow recovery, highlight recovery, color science or rolling shutter?

What matters for me most is a camera that is in the same league with it's bigger brothers image-wise. From that 1st test I see potential from this sensor. Further tests will come soon and I hope and wish to be proven that this camera is a game changer!!
Rolling shutter? I think that it's global shutter only Han Vogen.

How can you say that.? From that clip alone, i prefer Helium. I am yet to see great footage from Komodo but i have seen an Amazing shots done on Helium. We have to see.. lets hope next 48 hours. I really would love to have camera in hands of people like Mark Toia. Crap i see on YouTube or instagram does not do Komodo any favours.

There are multiple choices for highlight roll off in RCX or Resolve. It is a creative grading choice determined by software, not an inherent sensor property. As long as you have the total DR range available to allocate a few stops to roll off without crushing the blacks too much it is pretty much up to whoever does the grade. Once you hit 14 stops or more DR there is plenty of room to play with optimally exposed footage . Komodo should be running in the 16 stop range.

The camera firmware and color science is still under development. But you can't tell much about any camera from compressed web video. You really have to dig into the raw footage in a grading app for yourself.

David,

Yeah, The best tests are the ones you do yourself. Always base your opinion on the viability of a camera on how you work and process your image because others might not be using your same methodology.

A simple tint easily in 2 minutes Color Matches the Helium... I like what I am seeing.... DR and some other details even though is very YouTube limited for judging

This is something I've been interested in as well. Got my DSLR stolen and have a flash kit. If Komodo can completely supplant my need for a stills camera that would be so rad.
It may well do so. You'd probably need a side handle. The original BMPCC was so close to being a terrific low budget DSMC.

Alain,

Yeah easy to kinda match. However, I do like what comes out of the Komodo without any additional post processing.

Totally... Also, I think somehow KOMODO might bring better skin tones off the bat...

I am no expert but the comparison Helium vs Komodo brings me that glimpse...

Interesting when Phil brings icing on the cake and share some footage comps...

Alain,

Yeah, I think Skintones will be great right out of the Komodo. Can't wait to see some actual skintones samples from Phil!

So, KOMODO comes with RF mount by default, right? What do you exactly need for the Canon EF lens to fit? An adapter and that's it? I am a little lost in this department... I am a canon EF Mount user..

I was looking at this (Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Drop-in Variable ND Filter A)

Also the REVOLVA seems to be a more expensive option.

PS: Meanwhile, making a little shopping right now at GlobalDynamics website...

hehehehe

Looking really good so far. Looks like RED footage, and it looks like it will blend in with all the bigger cameras. Which I’m sure it was designed to do.

Confusion... No I don't mean anything yet. More tests need to come to a conclusion. BUT this test is a good start... that's all!

Is it confirmed that Komodo will only have two R3D compression rates, R3D HQ and R3D MQ? In reference to the second spec claimed by Y.M. Cinema above. If so, Komodo would lose a lot of its attractiveness for my kind of work. Having a 8:1 through 12:1 compression ratio is pretty important for saving space when needed.

Final specs have not been determined yet. They won’t be until the black production models are released.
